DH Thinks Shane Gillis is Great

We watched SNL and DH kept laughing and I didn’t really get the jokes, but then it came to the infamous “why are all women dressed like whores at the gym” and I was disgusted. DH laughed at it but saw my face and tried to pretend like it wasn’t that funny.

we talked a bit and it turns out DH loves this comedian and can’t stop defending him.

FWIW, I have laughed my head off to many edgy comedians like Dave Chappelle and Ricky Gervais. Somehow, this Gillis guy seems really off (and not terribly clever). DH’s defense is giving me the ick. We just started a week away trip that is supposed to be romantic and all I want to do is be far away from him.

Just watched it. He's not funny at all. In full agreement with you.

Ablondiebutagoody · 13/10/2026 00:45

Yes, you should totally dictate what he's allowed to find funny.

Bobloblaw84 · 13/10/2026 01:57

Love him. Tires is one of the funniest shows I have watched in a long time.

Translation: After pulling a disgusted face and making him feel he had to apologise for laughing, I lectured him endlessly and he felt he had to defend his sense of humour.

Move on.

Yes! Tires is my absolute favourite comedy atm. The cast are fantastic.
That said, I can see why it doesn't appeal to everyone.
I will happily admit, I have a fairly crude sense of humour - what I find funny is pretty much the same thing 15 year old me found funny.

Xnz2022 · 13/10/2026 04:23

That's ok isn't it? He is currently one of the most successful American comics.. so it isn't like your husband is into some weird or extreme thing. He just has a similar sense of humor to most other people at the moment.

That doesn't mean you have to agree or like it.

FancyPantsThatArentThatFancy · 13/10/2026 04:33

Have you not been married very long op? It’s a long road and if you’re going to fall at hurdles like this I don’t think you’ll last the distance. Also if my DH started telling me what I could or couldn’t find funny I wouldn’t hang around for the next thing he tried to control about me.

graygoose · 13/10/2026 04:38

Would be interesting to see the age split amongst people who think calling women whores is good old fashioned fun and others who think in the current climate it’s thinly veiled misogyny.

I don’t find him funny at all and his comments were gross. It’s nothing to end your marriage over but personally I would challenge it to my DH and say what about that was funny exactly? And I also love Dave Chapelle and Chris Rock and any amount of close to the wind stuff Jimmy Carr has made jokes about. Calling women whores isn’t funny.

DeftGoldHedgehog · 13/10/2026 04:46

I'd ask DH to explain why it's funny.

DeftGoldHedgehog · 13/10/2026 04:55

What pisses me off about quite popular, mainstream US comedy is the casual racism that is dropped in regularly. It doesn't surprise me that they use casual sexism as well given what a misogynistic country the US can be.

Upupandaway10 · 13/10/2026 05:34

You are both allowed to find different people funny or not

CurlewKate · 13/10/2026 07:49

I haven’t watched him so I’m speaking from a position of ignorance-but in general, you are allowed to not want misogynist or racist humour in your shared living area. You are also allowed to feel differently about your partner if you discover they find misogynist or racist humour funny.

jimmy Carr who talks about kids and priests?!

MickyMoonshine · 13/10/2026 07:53

I’d be disappointed if my DH found his comments funny. So I can see why it’s giving you the ick.
It’s fine to find different things funny but to think it’s funny to call women whores goes beyond a difference in humour. It’s misogyny.

Boomer55 · 13/10/2026 07:55

Humour is an individual thing - you can’t dictate what he should find funny or not. 🤷‍♀️

I see nothing funny about Peter Kaye, but loads of people obviously do.

Since when is calling women whores funny?

Comedians say inappropriate things all the time and push the boundaries.

Do you understand the difference between comedy and everyday discourse?

Yes. But that doesn’t answer my question.
What was so funny about calling women whores? Explain the joke to me.
What boundaries did that joke push?

And I’m not asking for censorship, I think it’s good for women to see how men view us.

Thundertoast · 13/10/2026 08:32

Im guessing you are like me, OP?

Ultimately, i want be with a man whose baseline is that he thinks sexism is fucking awful and sexist men are automatically twats, therefore when faced with it, his instinctive reactive to this is 'gross'.

As opposed to a man who doesnt give it a whole lot of thought beyond 'well yeah of course I dont believe you should discriminate against women!' And hasnt shown any sign of sexism to you personally, but has probably stood silent in the face of sexist comments, would immediately jump to defend a friends creepy or sexist behaviour as 'he doesnt mean it like that', has probably nodded along to his mates talking about how their 'crazy' exes 'stole their money in the divorce', has mates who are crap dads... i could go on but you get the idea, and has probably chuckled at sexist jokes in the group chat. Who when faced with a comment like this, laughs because it doesnt mean that much to him, rather than feeling instinctive disgust.

Does that sound about right?

(Yes, such men do exist. I have one. And he will laugh at 'edgy' comedy, it just has to be actually good edgy comedy, which this joke was just not... you dont need to be sexist to be edgy or shocking in the slightest, so bit of a skill issue on Shane Gillis's part)

I don’t think OP shared the joke in full so I can’t say.

The joke was.
Women dress like whores at the gym these days with their wrinkly shorts going up their asses, and then he goes on to say he is in all their selfies because he is looking at their shorts.

He then pulls a face.

MickyMoonshine · 13/10/2026 08:42

JimBobsWife · 13/10/2026 08:33

I don’t think OP shared the joke in full so I can’t say.

Wouldn’t it be prudent to actually look up the joke you’re defending?

Anyway, he said women at the gym these days dress like whores.
That was the ‘joke’. I’m still waiting for someone to tell
why that is funny.

Im a huge fan of observational comedy which to be funny needs to be nuanced, witty and relatable. Calling women whores is only relatable to misogynists and even if you just appeal to that specific group, I’m not sure where the comedy is?

KimWexlersPonyTail · 13/10/2026 08:48

Offensive jokes have to be funny or they are just offensive.Ricky Gervaise is the master of that, seen him live, not for the faint hearted but brilliant.

That SNL joke was just lame.

So comedy shows from the 70s which were horrendously racist or sexist would be acceptable now?
