DH Thinks Shane Gillis is Great

We watched SNL and DH kept laughing and I didn’t really get the jokes, but then it came to the infamous “why are all women dressed like whores at the gym” and I was disgusted. DH laughed at it but saw my face and tried to pretend like it wasn’t that funny.

we talked a bit and it turns out DH loves this comedian and can’t stop defending him.

FWIW, I have laughed my head off to many edgy comedians like Dave Chappelle and Ricky Gervais. Somehow, this Gillis guy seems really off (and not terribly clever). DH’s defense is giving me the ick. We just started a week away trip that is supposed to be romantic and all I want to do is be far away from him.

Shane Gillis is apart of the whole Joe rogan brigade who appeal to incels.
The funniest thing about his joke was thinking anyone would believe he’d ever stepped foot in a gym.
He does do a cracking trump impression though.

His joke was shite, lazy and not funny. When comedians push boundaries it’s quite rare they are funny. I think Dave Chapelle, Ricky Gervais and Joan Rivers manage to do it well but even then, it’s very audience dependent.

I think Matt rife is as funny as stepping in dog shit bare foot, Theo von hasn’t really ever made me laugh, Joe Rogan does absolutely nothing for me and Shane Gillis has his moments but on the whole, not for me.

It’s hard when you’re a woman to find men funny whose target audience support Andrew Tate. It’s catastrophic for women these days. Forgive me Shane for not finding us being called whores for wearing shorts funny.

I agree with Ricky Gervais on this.

But this isn't what Shane Gillis did. In fact, he did the opposite by calling women whores. It wasn't well crafted, it was just offensive.

Then he is a shit comedian and we can judge him for that.

JimBobsWife · 13/10/2026 11:18

sittingonabeach · 13/10/2026 10:37

He can probably say that as a white straight man, as less likely to be mocked and then be offended

Not sure why we need offensive comedy, the world is shit enough

Who gets to define offensive?

I saw a reel on IG last night with two black comedians mocking three Nigerian people in the audience for their names. It was very funny. Was it racist? Should they not be allowed to perform?

I agree that offensive comedy should be well crafted otherwise it is just offensive. That doesn't mean it should be cancelled.

Ricky Gervais talks very well on the subject and argues that people frequently get offended because they confuse the subject of a joke with its target. He says that you can make a joke about a taboo or dark subject (like illness, disability, or trans identity) without the joke actually mocking the people affected. He uses jokes to mock the absurdity of a situation, rather than to condone bad behaviour.

He also believes everyone is allowed to offend and be offended.

Calling women whores really does not fall into this category. It is blatantly a misogynistic slur.
Its not clever, funny or in any way a well observed piece of observational comedy.

There is no absolute line in the sand definition of offensive. I actually find people wanging on about being offended rather tedious; as if they have a right not to be offended.

But sexism, racism and ableism shouldn’t be acceptable to anyone, and it’s only really shit “comedians” who use these for a cheap shock laugh.

Would be interesting to see the age split amongst people who think calling women whores is good old fashioned fun and others who think in the current climate it’s thinly veiled misogyny.

I don’t find him funny at all and his comments were gross. It’s nothing to end your marriage over but personally I would challenge it to my DH and say what about that was funny exactly? And I also love Dave Chapelle and Chris Rock and any amount of close to the wind stuff Jimmy Carr has made jokes about. Calling women whores isn’t funny.

Jimmy Carr who once "joked" "How do you make a gay fuck a woman? Shit in her cunt."

It's not your place to judge humour.

Clearly.

I find your comment offensive. I'm not joking.

Apologise and ask for the mods to delete it.

I mean, obviously I am not an insane person so I wouldn't ask you to do that, nor does it matter, at all if I find you offensive, just as it doesn't matter, at all, that you find anyone else's words offensive.

What "should" be acceptable is different from one person to the next, and therefore irrelevant.

sittingonabeach · 13/10/2026 11:38

Is it only comedians who can be offensive? So schools have a huge issue with misogyny. Many boys excuse it as a banter (so being comedic). Many girls/female teachers get upset by it. Should they have to put up with it on a daily basis because obviously the boys are just being funny and they have the right to offend them

You don’t think racism, sexism or ableism should be deemed unacceptable? Really?

Personal opinions and tolerances will differ. Private conversations can go wherever is acceptable to the involved parties, but a public, televised platform really can't have an “anything goes” policy.

If someone mocked your child’s name at school, at the park etc would that be funny?

No idea…thats something you’d need to ask him.

So you agree with the straight white middle class man who defended jokes he made about audience members with disabilities?

That's not what I said.
I agree that people are allowed to offend and that people are allowed to be offended. I'm offended by misogyny. Shane Gilllis is allowed to say what he did and I'm allowed to be offended by it and explain why.

I think it is possible to make jokes about a dark or taboo subject as long as the joke is about the situation and not about the people it impacts.

I do believe in free speech but not free speech wthout consequences.

So is the consequence someone gets offended

That’s one consequence.
There could be a range of consequences. In this situation the consequences are that he’s had quite a big backlash. This could impact his career going forward. It could mean some people no longer what to hire him or work with him.

You're missing the point. Good comedy isn't just about mocking people - see my comment upthread with Ricky Gervais' take on the matter.

ETA: I used the word mocking in my earlier post to describe the reel I saw - but it was more than that. It was a clever take on the names some people choose for their children.

Shit comedian AND a misogynist.

But is he? Do we know that's how he behaves off stage?

If an actor plays a psychopath in a film, is he a psychopath in real life?

I’m sorry but if you’re going to stand up and publicly call women whores, then I think you can assume that person is a misogynist. Especially during a monologue which is about your own life.

AnswerIsNo · 13/10/2026 12:27

Shane Gillis, never heard of the guy

Googled him - he'd have trouble opening the door of the gym with his dad bod, as he wandered around in search of his chin

I think there's a misunderstanding of the creative space comedians occupy.

I doubt an otherwise reasonable, non-misogynist guy would entertain the idea of calling women whores for a laugh. He wouldn’t have found it funny himself.

A creative space that changes the meaning of misogyny?

There is no creative space in existence that makes calling women whores not an act of misogyny.

Comedians frequently perform material they do not personally agree with in real life - Ricky Gervais is the obvious example. In stand-up comedy, theatre, and satire a performer's stage persona or character does not automatically reflect their personal morals, political beliefs, or private views.

It's surprising that so many people are taking this so literally, as if he had said it to a mate down the pub. Comedy is an art form. Like acting.
