British people=friendliest, nicest people

They honestly are.

I'm English, but live overseas, have lived in different places and travelled most of the world.
I was recently back in the uk for a month and once again i'm bowled over by the friendliness, helpful attitude and just general kindness and positive attitude-not everyone of course, but so many people.
Live in a beautiful place, but the people aren't like this, it starts to bring you down.
Coming home always heals the soul

Anyway, just wanted to say this!

Does anyone agree?

Yes last time I came back for a visit I was amazed at how many people talked to me.

WildWindySeascape · 08/10/2026 19:29

British people are great but there are friendlier places, such as the Philippines.

Yes this! I first I was even a little suspicious, which is really very sad! So many people just chat to each other very easily
Where are you?

They are great, but it's still not the same thing.

Denmark. But it's not unfriendliness - they respect privacy so would never talk to you unless they needed help with something.

When I visit family in Scandinavia, I find the people to be wary when I say hello or whatever on a walk. It feels odd because where I live, people nod, smile, or say hello to everyone they pass.

Tigercrane · 08/10/2026 19:40

Well I am the friendliest nicest person I know, so yes.

beeble347 · 08/10/2026 19:41

Oh I don't feel like that at all atm, esp after reading on here how many people are enraged by spending time near a baby in public.

I've also lived abroad and found it really jarring moving back from eg Russia and forgetting how passive aggressive English people often are in public, all these unspoken rules you can fall foul of but not understand what exactly you've done wrong.

I was born here and love the community I live in (and believe there are obv lots of great Brits) but definitely don't find us extremely friendly as a country.

See I feel like that when I go back to London

Teffe · 08/10/2026 19:44

Have you been to NZ??!! London at least is pretty miserable. Went to a new reformer Pilates class this week and said hello and smiled. The other four women (well to do, English first language, no hearing impairment) stared at me. One murmured
some sort of greeting the rest ignored me. In Nz you would have got name, address, life story (I do admit it can be a but much).

maybe Britain is friendlier outside London but after 20 years I find people pretty unfriendly .

GingerIsland · 08/10/2026 19:46

I find Londoners a friendly bunch generally. People don’t take themselves too seriously and have a sense of humour.

FKAT · 08/10/2026 19:47

When British people are friendly we mean it. We are not fake-friendly like some cultures.

Onlythisnamewasavailable · 08/10/2026 19:51

Yes, I agree. British people are generally very friendly. I travel a lot, both abroad and in the UK, and wherever I go I do end up chatting to randoms.

You see people moaning about tourists on social media, but I have never experienced any negativity. I was recently in Cornwall, where they are supposed to hate tourists, but absolutely loads of locals, and other tourists stopped to talk to me. I especially loved the evenings, sunsets and/or high tide. Both travellers and locals all just gathering on the edge, watching the surfers, kids and dogs all happily playing, adults all chatting, or just sitting peacefully together. I even had locals saying come back next year!!

I think people in other countries can be friendly too. Americans wont leave you alone once they hear your English accent. Many cultures are curious about white people and want to talk to you and ask about your lifestyle.

I find people of Indian Heritage to be equally friendly in foreign lands. I have often made friends with other solo women travellers of Indian descent (but actually from all sorts of countries around the world). I think there is something highly compatible about Indian and English cultures and we always seem drawn to one another.

Language can be a barrier of course, but actually, I have had some lovely interactions with people, with whom I can't communicate with using language. I remember being in an Asian country, traveling alone with my child, and we wanted to eat street food. The culture was to all sit together on plastic chairs at tables all together. We were the only white people, and they couldn't speak English, but they mimed and pointed, and smiled to show us how to eat the food and how to garnish it. That was about 15 years ago now, but I still remember it and smile

I agree. People are so kind and friendly on the school run, in our neighbourhood, at parks, in the supermarket. Really lovely, community feel.

VioletsTale · 08/10/2026 20:12

I think they’re pretty average.

I’m not Filipina but not sure why you say it’s not the same thing?

People from the Philippines are ridiculously friendly and their hosting is fab.

Newmeagain · 08/10/2026 20:36

I’m am from oz, living here, and feel the same way as you. (This was meant to be a reply to the poster from nz.)

When British people are friendly we mean it. We are not fake-friendly like some cultures.

That hasn't been my experience throughout life.

gabsdot45 · 08/10/2026 20:51

In my experience it depends on the part.
I was in Lincolnshire recently and everyone called me darling, which was nice.

I'm Irish so I obviously think we're the most friendly.

ExtraHotDoubleShot · 08/10/2026 20:56

YANBU. I think our reputation from the war era (stiff upper lip) still hangs over us a bit, as does the clipped accent a lot of people have, but everyone is really helpful and polite. I’ve never needed help here and not got it.

Of London? That's surprising unless you mean more Ruislip type of area. How lovely though 😊

When British people are friendly we mean it. We are not fake-friendly like some cultures.

I found it to be the opposite. My former in-laws would be gushing over every person they met and then say unkind things about them in private. A couple of my friends do the same. Most posts on here are people bitching about this that and the other person while being perfectly polite to them to their face.
At least if someone in Germany or Romania thinks you are an arsehole, they will tell you that straight.

Everybodysinthehousetonight · 08/10/2026 21:05

I really don't agree! Or perhaps I'm surrounded by snobby rude people with faces like slapped arses all the time.

NZ wins hands down, everyone is friendly no matter where you're from, what you look like or how you speak.
