British people=friendliest, nicest people

They honestly are.

I'm English, but live overseas, have lived in different places and travelled most of the world.
I was recently back in the uk for a month and once again i'm bowled over by the friendliness, helpful attitude and just general kindness and positive attitude-not everyone of course, but so many people.
Live in a beautiful place, but the people aren't like this, it starts to bring you down.
Coming home always heals the soul

Anyway, just wanted to say this!

Does anyone agree?

Im not from the UK but the overarching impression of the British people is not that they are friendly. But that they are entitled and self congratulatory.

But I guess all nations think they’re the best nation.

What is your home nation? Are people there modest and self effacing?

arlequin · 08/10/2026 22:43

Why is everyone saying London isn’t friendly? We’re super friendly! Just don’t want to chat on tube.
also I’m pretty sure if you’re an “immigrant” London is one of the friendlier places

Agree @Whyislifesocrapnow Brits are awesome! Grin

buggermewhatnext · 08/10/2026 22:47

Average I would say

Sunbringer · 08/10/2026 22:51

I mean it’s because you’re English… so English friendliness matches up perfectly with what you read culturally as friendliness. The Americans think we’re stuck up and stand offish and we think they’re fake and over enthusiastic. Cultural difference in the perception of ‘friendly’.

And I agree with a PP, that Philippines is the friendliest seeming culture lol.

ThatLemonBee · 08/10/2026 22:52

sorry but no , Irish and Scottish people yes , but English ( and obviously not everyone ) are far from what most of the world is ours consider friendly or hospitable .

Yoheresthestory · 08/10/2026 22:53

The irony of this whole thread.

Absolutely, from the POV of this immigrant.

DrinkFeckArseBrick · 08/10/2026 22:59

Do you think British people are friendlier to you than other people are when you are outside the UK, because of the increase in racism and xenophobia? I am not sure that a lot of minorities would describe British as really friendly right now. Do you think people in other places would be friendlier to you, if you were their nationality or culture and not British? This would make loads of people think their home culture was the friendliest

I honestly don't think it's that

England is the most multicultural of all the British Isles. I feel like you really want to say something but are holding back?

😂 Scotland has a reputation for being terrible at hospitality and far from generous!

Edited

I think that’s a fair point. Different behaviours code as friendly to different cultures. It makes sense that your own culture fits you best. I know that when I returned to my home country after living longterm in England, I only became retrospectively aware of what a strain it had been at times playing down my foreignness and performing to a different code.

I find Londoners a friendly bunch generally. People don’t take themselves too seriously and have a sense of humour.

I lived in London for seven years and it’s definitely the friendliest place I’ve ever lived.

I think it’s because almost everyone feels like an outsider and they want to connect. I remember being on a bus journey to Victoria Station with my young son after visiting my sister, and a couple in front just turned to me and said they loved how I interacted with my son. We ended up chatting for the subsequent 30 minute journey (there were traffic issues). That would never happen in my home town (south east).

fluffydoglove · 08/10/2026 23:22

I live overseas but go home to England a lot and the thing I notice is how polite and mannerly the majority of English people are ..holding doors for you, the amount of sorrys I get in a supermarket people apologise all the time if they get in your way.. I never hear please and Thank you as much as I do in England
So we’re definitely more polite that’s for sure

HappyViewer · 08/10/2026 23:23

I think Canadians need a mention in the friendliness league table.

Happyjoe · 08/10/2026 23:24

I find Londoners friendly, well neighbours and those see regularly out and about but it's all surface friendly - personally I like that. Londoners don't ask much on the way of favours and are polite, funny but basically not interested in your life, which I also like as it also means they don't bother to gossip much.

Small towns I find very friendly but in your face. Very much in a way to see what you can do for them, favours are constantly asked - and very gossipy and bitchy. I live in a small town now and it's very different to living in London and other cities and cannot wait to leave.

As for the UK being friendly, yes I guess it is. USA is friendly too in a lot of places, Canada, NZ (but not Oz), But it's becoming less friendly imo, things are changing for the worst, esp if you're not from the UK.

I am not British, but have lived here For many years. I think average. The more North in England you travel, the more friendly and chatty is my experience. I also don’t think I am a particularly friendly person myself and if I was more open and chatty, that’s what people would return. What I struggle with is the British people can be two faced. More two faced than what I have experienced from people from other countries and I have travelled a lot and lived in a fair few countries. I find that the most negative British trait.

GustyGertie · 08/10/2026 23:44

I would imagine that those who are friendly and smiley will be more likely to attract a warm response. Just based on what I see day to day.

I appreciate different cultures will have their particular way of interacting but generally speaking if you’re nice then people are usually nice back. Perhaps a little baffled you’re speaking to them, but not unfriendly.

MrsBennetsPoorNervesAreBack · 08/10/2026 23:47

I don't agree. I've lived in several places that are much friendlier than the UK.

Though I do think it varies a bit depending on where you go in the UK as well.

malware · 09/10/2026 00:05

I would love to have everyone's picture on here and see if we could get a correlation going with how good looking you are and how friendly you think the UK is.

Because my experience is the world is a much lovelier and friendlier place when I go out with my good looking friends. And not so much when me and my fat old arse are out without them

Sorry OP but my guess is you are stunning and yet to go through the menopause
