British people=friendliest, nicest people

They honestly are.

I'm English, but live overseas, have lived in different places and travelled most of the world.
I was recently back in the uk for a month and once again i'm bowled over by the friendliness, helpful attitude and just general kindness and positive attitude-not everyone of course, but so many people.
Live in a beautiful place, but the people aren't like this, it starts to bring you down.
Coming home always heals the soul

Anyway, just wanted to say this!

Does anyone agree?

Not sure but somehow every time I meet an Australian I am amazed by their friendliness.

See I feel like that when I go back to London

How dare you talk to someone from London when it was not absolutely necessary. 😂 😂😂

ExtraHotDoubleShot · 08/10/2026 21:08

I’m not from London but every time I’ve been there everyone has been super friendly. They don’t initiate the chat but if you do they’re really nice and helpful. Funny too.

Of London? That's surprising unless you mean more Ruislip type of area. How lovely though 😊

‘The NW’ tends to mean Cumbria or Lancashire (despite the latter being right in the middle of the U.K.) rather than a bit of London.

The thread has reminded me of this…

I agree with this I love Australians. They are super friendly and so laid back but I do think most Brits are pretty friendly. I like chatting to random people in the supermarket and having a conversation will shop workers at the till etc.

AllTheChicken · 08/10/2026 21:09

When I go back to the UK people look at me strangely when I say hello or how are you when out walking etc and dont seem to know how to react. That ranges fron NI to the South of England

OtherS · 08/10/2026 21:11

I'm in [what's supposed to be] a super snooty, uptight, mega-posh bit of the home counties, and people are really friendly. And I'm definitely not of the 'right type' so if random strangers chat with me, they'll chat with anyone! Find that in London too, where I'm not even a local. Always thought it very weird when people say we're standoffish round here, I assume people have never actually been. Or if they have, they've not tried talking to anyone? I tend to have far more trouble trying to politely end a conversation than I ever do starting one!

When I visit family in Scandinavia, I find the people to be wary when I say hello or whatever on a walk. It feels odd because where I live, people nod, smile, or say hello to everyone they pass.

Me too. I live in a very safe, friendly place and am from Yorkshire where yapping to strangers is second nature. When we visit DH’s hometown in Sweden I find it very odd that smiles as you pass someone out on a walk or a run are not returned (and if I say Hello I’m often stared at like I’ve just landed from Mars).

FiveEightNine · 08/10/2026 21:19

I don't feel like that.
Yes on the very superficial level of saying hello and smiling.
No on the level of any deeper chat - I never know who means what and who is just being meaninglessly polite.

I really like born canadians. They feel a bit more open about disagreeing and discussing ideas.

Even in Northern English cities??

Have you been to NZ??!! London at least is pretty miserable. Went to a new reformer Pilates class this week and said hello and smiled. The other four women (well to do, English first language, no hearing impairment) stared at me. One murmured
some sort of greeting the rest ignored me. In Nz you would have got name, address, life story (I do admit it can be a but much).

maybe Britain is friendlier outside London but after 20 years I find people pretty unfriendly .

Britain outside London for a foreigner is not friendly.

Op, may be people around the world are simply nicer to one of their own and a bit suspicious to those they see as the ‘other’.

LlynTegid · 08/10/2026 21:26

It varies across the parts of the UK.

ElleintheWoods · 08/10/2026 21:32

GingerIsland · 08/10/2026 19:46

I find Londoners a friendly bunch generally. People don’t take themselves too seriously and have a sense of humour.

Indeed, I find people much more friendly and chatty in London than in other parts, especially the nicer parts of London like Mayfair, Richmond etc. Always meet so many people and love it anytime I am there.

Where I live is fine but people mostly just say hello, having a proper chat is less common.

But overall yes, British people win. Spanish + Italian people are also great but only if you seem sufficiently integrated/ tick some other boxes.

Jimmyjumpy · 08/10/2026 21:34

Dunno. Never left uk for a time and come back.

DiscombobulatedHedgehog · 08/10/2026 21:34

The countries of the United Kingdom are all different though. City people and rural, East Coast and West, North and South. You really can’t generalise.

I don’t like a very common trait of seeming pleasant to one’s face and then really badmouthing behind your back…I definitely don’t think that is friendly.

cheeseomelette · 08/10/2026 21:36

We’ve just returned from an overseas trip to 6 countries. In every one the local people told us that the British visitors were the most polite and friendly, along with the Australians. This was our experience too.

HappyViewer · 08/10/2026 21:40

I’ve been to 71 countries and I found Americans and Maltese people the friendliest.

mbosnz · 08/10/2026 21:43

I've found people to be friendly everywhere I've gone, UK, France, Italy, Spain, the US, Canada, Aussie, and of course NZ!

I'm forever puzzled by how people say how rude French people, and Parisians are.

Brits, in the main, yes, they've been friendly. The further North you go, the friendlier they get! But Londoners can be so kind, especially if you're in trouble. The day of 9/11, with the tubes down, I had no idea how to get home over ground, and I got passed from person to person until they got me home from Aldgate to Brent Cross.

Yes, should have said really that I don't include London in it

Without a doubt, New Zealanders would have to be the friendliest people in the world.

I agree. People are so kind and friendly on the school run, in our neighbourhood, at parks, in the supermarket. Really lovely, community feel.

Yes, I couldn't get over it, makes such a difference to your day

I’m not Filipina but not sure why you say it’s not the same thing?

People from the Philippines are ridiculously friendly and their hosting is fab.

They can be friendly, but in my experience, many British are more open, helpful, friendly and like to have a bit of a laugh/banter

I live in the NW. My walk to work is like a scene from the Truman Show…

The NW is the prime spot for this, it's lovely

In my experience it depends on the part.
I was in Lincolnshire recently and everyone called me darling, which was nice.

I'm Irish so I obviously think we're the most friendly.

Irish super friendly and lovely
