British people=friendliest, nicest people

They honestly are.

I'm English, but live overseas, have lived in different places and travelled most of the world.
I was recently back in the uk for a month and once again i'm bowled over by the friendliness, helpful attitude and just general kindness and positive attitude-not everyone of course, but so many people.
Live in a beautiful place, but the people aren't like this, it starts to bring you down.
Coming home always heals the soul

Anyway, just wanted to say this!

Does anyone agree?

The NW is the prime spot for this, it's lovely

My family are from the NW (moved south) and now they know EVERYONE and everybody’s business because they’re so chatty and familiar with people 😂

I found it to be the opposite. My former in-laws would be gushing over every person they met and then say unkind things about them in private. A couple of my friends do the same. Most posts on here are people bitching about this that and the other person while being perfectly polite to them to their face.
At least if someone in Germany or Romania thinks you are an arsehole, they will tell you that straight.

Yep...they'll definitely tell you straight...doesn't always make for a pleasant experience!
I don't feel it's fake at all

Not sure but somehow every time I meet an Australian I am amazed by their friendliness.

Yes, Aussies very friendly too, Americans too

Britain outside London for a foreigner is not friendly.

Op, may be people around the world are simply nicer to one of their own and a bit suspicious to those they see as the ‘other’.

Nah...where I am, I am fluent in their language and looks wise can pass for one of them, it's just not as friendly, the people are all like that to each other

So British, Irish, Aussies, Americans are all friendly but people from Philippines not so much.

Do you see the trend here?

Platypusdiver · 08/10/2026 22:05

No. I don’t agree. I am from the south west and people here can be neutral to just plain grumpy when I go back.

But having sad that, I do love the way everyone says thank you to the bus driver when getting off. And I mean everyone. That’s nice.

Having lived in Australia, I also reckon they are very friendly.

I said they are too!

Don't make this into something it's not, that's not fair or correct

For my area (Devon) and my experience, I’d agree for the most part that we’re a pretty friendly, nice bunch. Generally.

Kiwis are fantastic, again generally. I loved them immediately travelling, loved them even more working seasons and living there, they’re very open and accepting.

I haven't been to New Zealand, so don't know, majority of people were always very friendly when I lived in Oz though

British people are just nosey bastards.

Minasama · 08/10/2026 22:13

I totally agree. I lived abroad for more than 12 years and I was very, deeply, happy for many years after I came back.

Most people aren’t transactional in the U.K. like they are in many places, so many people are genuinely kind and helpful. I used to love it when you went to the supermarket and the cashier would be either very funny indeed, or just a really sweet person who chatted in a nice way. That never happened when I lived abroad. Likewise train conductors etc. The police are friendly and helpful (admittedly I’ve never been in contact with them in the context of me being accused of a crime.)
You can have proper, deep conversations with many people, not just surface-level small talk.

While the environment is sadly changing a bit now, the UK was always way, way more tolerant and open than anywhere else I’ve lived. We were brought up to look at the person not the skin colour and I genuinely think many people in my generation still do that.

Missohnoyoubetterdont · 08/10/2026 22:18

Yes, agree we are generally very friendly and I missed that when I lived abroad.

blahdeeblah1 · 08/10/2026 22:30

British people are definitely way friendlier than Germans and Eastern Europeans, but not a patch on a lot of other nationalities. From my experience, Americans, Brazilians, Vietnamese, Indians, Canadians and Kiwis are all much friendlier than Brits, on average. Kiwis in particular blew me away when I was in NZ – so lovely, open and generous.

I think there's a difference though when visiting tourist spots/for a holiday and living there and being used to the real culture and people

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 08/10/2026 22:36

I think it varies by area. The place I grew up in Yorkshire was very friendly.

Yoheresthestory · 08/10/2026 22:38

Im not from the UK but the overarching impression of the British people is not that they are friendly. But that they are entitled and self congratulatory.

But I guess all nations think they’re the best nation.

Frantle · 08/10/2026 22:40

But I’m assuming most of you claiming British people are very friendly are British yourselves?

It certainly wasn’t my experience as a foreigner who lived in different parts of England for nearly 20 years, having also lived in several other countries. The rural midlands, where I spent seven years, was the most unfriendly place I’ve ever lived. London was probably the friendliest place in England I lived in

When I first moved to England as a graduate student in a very international university city, and made friends with lots of nationalities, I remember thinking at my first Christmas that it was weird hadn’t made any English friends. By summer I realised that I had, but that the English friendships were about six months ‘behind’ the friendships with other nationalities.

Not unfriendly, certainly, but far from the friendliest, and with significant regional differences.
