to not get why people are so offended by Dryrobes?

I was picking up a parcel at my local InPost lockers in town today, and overheard someone commenting on my Dryrobe. It’s the first time I’ve heard anything myself, but there’s loads of Facebook groups for laughing at “Dryrobe Wankers”. I know that they’re not everyone’s cup of tea, but so what? Why do people are so much about the coat a stranger is wearing to the point they are making social media shaming posts about them?

I don’t really get this either. Its a bit of a trendy fad and I guess people think it will date quickly but the hate seems very overblown.

Sparrowsandbudgies · Yesterday 13:22

I think people have just become more rude.

Namechangingregularly · Yesterday 13:27

Yes it has got to be some sort of an envy. Maybe envy of the coat or even of the confidence of someone not caring about others rudeness and just wearing what they want.
also water sport activities - as with lots of sports- are associated with higher earning demographic. Therefore that is in the mix too. Either the person wearing the robe is seen as ostentatious or pretentious.
either way I’m now more interested in buying one because people describe the warmth and comfort. That’s an attractive feature for me.

Depends the situation it’s worn in.

Had a colleague who wore theirs to work. It’s smart dress code. She wasn’t coming from a swim.

I just wear mine as a waterproof coat when out with the horses. It's really warm,. completely waterproof and lightweight so I can actually move my arms. Best thing I ever bought. I hate big thick heavy waterproofs which is what most winter coats are. Heavy and can't move in them, awful! I know they're used by swimmers and that was their original purpose but they're just really warm and comfy waterproof coats I don't see one and think "watersports". Lots of people are wearing them for general outdoor activities.

virtualpaddock · Yesterday 13:41

It's not a coat though, is it? It's a wearable giant swimming towel.

ScaredButUnavoidable · Yesterday 13:44

Im going to have to Google what a dry robe is!!

Sherararara · Yesterday 13:45

They just look awful that all. Like
wearing a bin bag or a sack.

Sprig1 · Yesterday 13:50

People are rude bullies who like to jump on a social media bandwagon. Just ignore them.

HarrietSchulenberg · Yesterday 13:50

Depends on the context in which they're worn. Post-swim outdoors, sidelines of kids' football matches, cool weather camoping, wet weather dog walk - all fine.
Large indoor shopping centre on Saturday afternoon over pyjamas - bit silly and crap.
I've seen all of these quite regularly.

NorthFacingGardener · Yesterday 13:51

It’s definitely not envy! I think the dry robe wanker thing peaked a few years ago though when people first started wearing them out and about rather than just when open water swimming.

Its a bit like when people first started wearing gym leggings / gym sets out and about rather than just to the gym.

ToKittyornottoKitty · Yesterday 13:51

It’s a bit like crocs isn’t it, they started as a fad and are really ugly. People either love them or hate them. I’d never comment on someone’s shoes or coat in public as it’s just rude, but both crocs and dry robes look stupid in my opinion.

Funnywonder · Yesterday 13:51

I think there was a lot of mockery and ridicule at the beginning because it looked as if people were wearing them to give the impression they had been wild water swimming when all they were doing was buying a loaf of bread and a carton of milk from Tesco Express. I remember when jodhpurs became fashionable in the eighties, there were loads of ‘where’s yer horse?’ type comments. And there was plenty of ‘comedy’ around people wearing sports clothes as everyday wear. That eventually became the norm. I think social media has just made this kind of thing more widespread. I must admit the first few times I saw people in Dryrobes, I thought they looked ridiculous. It was as if the coat was wearing them rather than the other way round. But they were just thoughts in my head, never expressed aloud. I’m used to seeing them now and don’t think anything about them. It’s a bit old hat to mock them.

This is definitely a major factor!
Combine that with the increase in envy through many levels of society & influence of social media, and some people believe they have the right to express themselves by being loudly rude about others.
I am ashamed of being human sometimes.

(See also the nasty phenomenon of labelling women as “Karens” if they have the temerity to express themselves in a way that the name-caller doesn’t like.)

Tiddlywinkly · Yesterday 13:57

I think they look sloppy in everyday circumstances away from sport.

Emphasis on 'think'. People will have all sorts of different opinions, but I wouldn't tell people my thoughts unless asked.

I put dry robes in the same fashion bracket as sliders and crocs, fine when worn in the correct setting, but look silly when worn down town.

I wouldn't go as far as to mock people for it, that's rude. Taking photos is completely out of line.

It’s not a towel, as much as changing robe. Maybe a distinction without a difference, but I use my Dryrobe for warmth and don’t like it for actual changing.

I might be the last person in the world. I've never seen one. Do you have to watch a school run to see them?

Perhaps wear your swimming cap to complete the look? 😂

But people often combine trips out so they aren’t always in ‘the correct setting’. I was in town in my Dryrobe which is apparently the incorrect use, but making a stop off on my way to swim. I don’t think I need to offer my credentials or daily plan to wear a coat though.

also crocs and for poshos red trousers: https://lookatmyfuckingredtrousers.blogspot.com/

If you wear something a bit daft, in the UK you will be mocked. About 10 years ago I had the audacity to wear a beret in Leeds and a man shouted "Watch out for the ladder" then "Oooo Betty" in reference to Frank Spencer, which confused my daughter but was pretty funny.

Look at my fucking red trousers!

There’s lots of things that I think look awful but I wouldn’t comment on or join a Facebook group to deride. I just don’t buy them and get on with my life.

My comment is about being teased for wearing a beret, god knows why it has been hidden 😂
