to not get why people are so offended by Dryrobes?

I was picking up a parcel at my local InPost lockers in town today, and overheard someone commenting on my Dryrobe. It’s the first time I’ve heard anything myself, but there’s loads of Facebook groups for laughing at “Dryrobe Wankers”. I know that they’re not everyone’s cup of tea, but so what? Why do people are so much about the coat a stranger is wearing to the point they are making social media shaming posts about them?

I think they are great if you do outdoor swimming, walk the dogs, watch kids playing outdoor sports but if you are wearing one to go shopping in a town I think they look ridiculous ! Personal opinion

Why do you think they look ok when walking a dog, but not without one?

They are just ugly no matter where they are

Depends on the context in which they're worn. Post-swim outdoors, sidelines of kids' football matches, cool weather camoping, wet weather dog walk - all fine.
Large indoor shopping centre on Saturday afternoon over pyjamas - bit silly and crap.
I've seen all of these quite regularly.

Totally This. It’s definitely not envy.

I might be the last person in the world. I've never seen one. Do you have to watch a school run to see them?

Come to Cornwall, buy a cheap body board and stand by the sea (do not get wet though, this is a costume) and you’ll see lots. Polzeath and Rock are particularly popular. If you go to Newquay or Perranporth you will get the added bonus of the fake lifeguard hoodie.

Dry robes are the new wolf fleeces.

Depends the situation it’s worn in.

Had a colleague who wore theirs to work. It’s smart dress code. She wasn’t coming from a swim.

But did she wear it while working or hang it up? If she put it up, it doesn’t matter.

It's not a coat though, is it? It's a wearable giant swimming towel.

Mine isnt. Its more like a waterproof coat just rather shapeless because its intended to have lots of room underneath to change out of swimming things without getting cold.

Because people look like dicks in them!

All a matter of opinion really.

SeedsOfReason · Yesterday 20:08

They are not offended.

They comment negatively because they think it marks them out as superior, which is the one and only reason why anyone sneers at anything.

Greenmouldycheese · Yesterday 20:10

I agree with you. Its very wet where I live and im thinking if getting ine fir the school run. Really dint guve a toss what anyone thinks. Sounds like they're jealous of a coat.

What if as I said I do outdoor swimming and on the way there or back did an errand in town. Is that great or ridiculous?

you're meant to get changed under it after outdoor swimming not just throw it on and go to Tesco in your damp cossie and a mahoosive coat

Rituelec · Yesterday 20:31

So to be clear

You were in town in a wetsuit, dryrobe and crocs

I always do this 😆

Well it's fantastic for ND kids after swimming for a parent!

Whats it got to do with being ND?

KojaksLollipop · Yesterday 20:37

I have a dryrobe and a tent box, I’m a double wanker. I’m going for the trinity if anyone knows of something else I can get. DGAF what anyone says, bring it on, lol!

Tryingtokeepgoing · Yesterday 20:45

Because people hate middle class women. Simples.

I’m not sure there’s anything middle class about a dryrobe. They’re everywhere in certain parts of the country precisely because they are very affordable. Like all functional clothing used outside the environment for which they were intended they look a bit silly to many. No more complicated than that. The very fact they are now mainstream means they are inherently uncool and unstylish. But, they do keep you warm and covered while changing, so if that’s something you feel the urge to do on a trip to the supermarket crack on. It’s better than exposing yourself ;)

2Rebecca · Yesterday 20:47

Dryrobes are fine if you’ve just had a swim. It’s a dressing gown equivalent

CaramelGhost · Yesterday 20:51

People are just rude. I bought a knock off one for sea swimming. I never wore mine out but I wouldn't judge anyone who does. They're cosy, warm, waterproof and a perfect coat. Fashionable? NO. But the average person isn't even close to fashionable either so at least let it be practical

LadyLooo · Yesterday 20:52

notadryrobewanker · Yesterday 14:01

It’s not a towel, as much as changing robe. Maybe a distinction without a difference, but I use my Dryrobe for warmth and don’t like it for actual changing.

It’s no different to people wearing dressing gowns and pyjamas outdoors.

It might well feel comfortable but looks awful, therefore people will judge.

Very rude to comment out loud though.

You’re not “meant” to do anything with it other than what works for you. I don’t like changing under mine, so I change under a hooded towel and throw my Dryrobe on top of my clothes to warm up after. That’s not an unusual way to use a Dryrobe. When I head to shops after I’m in dry clothes under my Dryrobe. Though if I was just in a costume, maybe I wouldn’t be a Dryrobe wanker because it’s clear that I’ve just been swimming.

Of course it's completely different.

Do you think wild swimmers also have a coat and exclusively use their dry robe to change? When it's also a perfectly roomy, comfortable, warm and waterproof coat?😂

People who think they look "awful" never dare showing photos of what THEY are wearing, because it's never an improvement and they don't look at all better.

Doyouknowdanieltiger · Yesterday 21:05

Mines a regatta one does that count 🤣🤣.
Oh I love my crocs too, I used to hate them but theyre so comfy and im in my 30s so fuck it.

Someone who swims at the same time as me has a gorgeous burgundy Regatta one. I’m a bit jealous in my black Dryrobe

“If you wear something a bit daft you will be mocked “

actually means “if you wear something bit approved of by the majority you will be mocked”

actually means “you must conform to our norm for no reason other than we say so even though it’s harming no one “

mocking people should either be utterly private or done with affection. Anything else is bullying and plain nasty

this totally

I use a dry robe for after swimming and never wear any other time. It is great for warming up after a swim and changing in. It’s far too big to wear as a coat for walking round town or whatever, the sleeves are huge and get in the way and I suspect it smells a bit of lake.
