to not get why people are so offended by Dryrobes?

I was picking up a parcel at my local InPost lockers in town today, and overheard someone commenting on my Dryrobe. It’s the first time I’ve heard anything myself, but there’s loads of Facebook groups for laughing at “Dryrobe Wankers”. I know that they’re not everyone’s cup of tea, but so what? Why do people are so much about the coat a stranger is wearing to the point they are making social media shaming posts about them?

also crocs and for poshos red trousers: https://lookatmyfuckingredtrousers.blogspot.com/

If you wear something a bit daft, in the UK you will be mocked. About 10 years ago I had the audacity to wear a beret in Leeds and a man shouted "Watch out for the ladder" then "Oooo Betty" in reference to Frank Spencer, which confused my daughter but was pretty funny.

Thank you for this! My DH has a pair of maroon trousers that I absolutely hate. If he sees this hopefully he’ll finally get shot of them 😂 Not that he could be described in any way as posh!

Well it's fantastic for ND kids after swimming for a parent!

They’re useful for most people after swimming. That kinda misses the point though, people joke about adults wearing them for non swim related things, not kids wearing them after swimming

Round my way (south dublin) it was definitely snobbery from the local sea swimmers who have been sea swimming for years at the massive influx of newbies who took it up during covid.

They definitely feel they're tourists and have changed the vibe. The dry robe is taken as an indicator of the Johnny come lately insta crew. All very territorial and pathetic.

It's not an opinion I subscribe to and I don't know if that's a universal reason for he mockery but it definitely is a factor round here.

“If you wear something a bit daft you will be mocked “

actually means “if you wear something bit approved of by the majority you will be mocked”

actually means “you must conform to our norm for no reason other than we say so even though it’s harming no one “

mocking people should either be utterly private or done with affection. Anything else is bullying and plain nasty

But calling into a shop for a forgotten ingredient for dinner on the way back from the lake is still after swimming. I use a swim cap so my hair stays fairly dry, and it’s not like I wear a sign saying that I was indeed in open water fifteen minutes ago.

Depends the situation it’s worn in.

Had a colleague who wore theirs to work. It’s smart dress code. She wasn’t coming from a swim.

The dress code doesn't usually cover the outdoors wear, rather the clothes worn during the working day. I assume she did take it off to work?

I haven’t disputed that 🤷‍♀️ I was responding to the person saying it was useful for her child after swimming.

Crocs and dry robes are ugly, many people wear dry robes just randomly and your wet suit wasn’t visible so people couldn’t guess you were going swimming. They were rude regardless, but hopefully they didn’t intend for you to hear.

It's not a coat though, is it? It's a wearable giant swimming towel.

The towelling versions are, but there are also waterproof coat versions with fleece lining.

SeraphionLightbringer · Yesterday 18:16

I’m not offended, people can wear whatever they want. I just think they’re really ugly and they’re not my personal style.

NormasArse · Yesterday 18:18

There’s more point to a dryrobe type coat than one of those long, sleeveless puffer coats imo.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · Yesterday 18:19

Does it matter if they're ugly if they do the job of keeping you warm and dry? I've got a truly dreadful dog walking coat that I wear at stables and sometimes out shopping if the weather is awful because it keeps the rain off and stops me from freezing - it's horrible. It's ugly and shapeless but it does what it's supposed to do.

If I could afford a DryRobe, then damn straight I'd wear that. I hate being cold.

Newsenmum · Yesterday 18:21

But it’s just a large, waterproof coat.

That’s the type Ive got. It just looks like a coat.

AnnaQuayRules · Yesterday 18:29

I'm an open water, all year round, swimmer. When I've been for a dip in January I absolutely need my Dry Robe on afterwards. It is worth every penny and I don't care how ugly or unfashionable it is.

However, I also wear it when dog walking in dreadful weather. Why wouldn't I? Do people honestly think I should ignore the most cosy, waterproof coat I've got in favour of a thinner, less waterproof one because I've not just come from the beach?

Elsvieta · Yesterday 18:32

I think it's more about the associations. Second-homers in Cornwall who mean the locals can't afford a home, that sort of thing.

This is exactly why people take the piss out of them!
also the people who own them go on about them being warm and waterproof like no one ever invited the coat!!

That’s a good point. I’ve never understood why people have their bodies cocooned in a quilt from neck to ankle, but don’t care about their arms. I suppose they feel they have more freedom of movement with no sleeves, but I would hate having cold arms!

Nonnimuss · Yesterday 18:54

notadryrobewanker · Yesterday 14:20

But I don’t get why they ‘should’ stay by the water. If like today when I’m running an errand while I’m on the way to the lake should I pack two coats so strangers aren’t offended by an ugly but practical one? Or make two trips to save the eyes of strangers?

This! I often stop off at a shop on my way home from a swim.
I should just scurry home in shame after I’ve been swimming and make sure nobody sees my dry robe out of context. God forbid I offend anyone.

It’s more waterproof, windproof and warm than any other coat I’ve ever owned. Plus it dries very quickly.
I don’t get why people are offended. It’s a better, more practical coat for sports but also for when the weather is really shit.

ClaudeHopper · Yesterday 18:57

I think there’s a snobbery about them and people like to sneer.

I’d not wear one because they’re so very fugly, but it’s not my concern if others wear them.

Sesma · Yesterday 19:02

It is weird how people think so much about what others wear, how does it affect them anyway

cornflakecrunchie · Yesterday 19:06

I just hate anything ugly!
Sorry, no malice meant.. those, plus crocs, the gym leggings things that go right up womens' ar*es, right back to shell suits.. all SO ugly.

Tiggy321 · Yesterday 19:08

I think they are great if you do outdoor swimming, walk the dogs, watch kids playing outdoor sports but if you are wearing one to go shopping in a town I think they look ridiculous ! Personal opinion

What if as I said I do outdoor swimming and on the way there or back did an errand in town. Is that great or ridiculous?
