to not get why people are so offended by Dryrobes?

I was picking up a parcel at my local InPost lockers in town today, and overheard someone commenting on my Dryrobe. It’s the first time I’ve heard anything myself, but there’s loads of Facebook groups for laughing at “Dryrobe Wankers”. I know that they’re not everyone’s cup of tea, but so what? Why do people are so much about the coat a stranger is wearing to the point they are making social media shaming posts about them?

Crocs cured my plantar fasciitis and kept it cured. I don't care what they look like.

That’s ok, you don’t need to!

intrepidpanda · Yesterday 15:10

Its not the robe itself but I associate them with dog owners. Dog wankers and dry robe wankers tend to come under the same umbrella

I have a dry robe which I wear for swimming on the beach, for changing under outdoors, for walking the dog in winter when it’s cold and wet. I had mine before they became really popular and when they were used only by ‘outdoorsy’ people. Mine was a gift and it’s still going strong. It’s a great piece of kit and well worth the expensive price tag for the use I have got from it.

unfortunately, the dry robe is now associated with a certain type of middle class mum who stands on the football sidelines bemoaning why darling Harry isn’t playing his preferred position or little Henrietta should be on the pitch instead of that other girl who is rubbish. I have heard exactly these words from dryrobe wearing parents about small children enjoying grass roots sport rather than watching their child play at Wembley. It’s not the dryrobe obviously, but a lovely piece of outdoor kit has been hijacked by a certain type of well off, pushy middle class parent who give it a bad name. At our local primary, there is a certain ‘set’ - loud, slightly obnoxious- who wear them in a variety of colours like a uniform. As far as I am aware, none of them engage in the kind of outdoor activity for which the dryrobe was invented. It’s now a fashion item and like all fashion items it is designed to send a message about the wearer.

That’s why people think you’re a wanker. They think you’re one of them. You might not be but it’s worth being aware of other people’s perceptions however inaccurate.

@notadryrobewanker
I agree with you, it is not a "should" as far as I'm concerned. My point is just about what some think of as specific clothes for certain activities. I wear my crocs all the time, to do the garden, walk the dog and around the house. One of my friends thinks they are "beach shoes" like flip flops and that's all.

Myli1 · Yesterday 15:15

This is the first I’ve heard of any mockery? DP and I often go skinny dipping and in the cooler months we find dry robes are a great thing to just throw on after a swim. Honestly though I wouldn’t wear it to go out shopping.

Summerlovingtheraspberries · Yesterday 15:16

I don’t get the hate either.
Who cares?
I certainly don’t.

Summerlovingtheraspberries · Yesterday 15:21

Another fan of crocs here. Mine are so comfortable. I had a severe foot injury and crocs are one of the only shoes which don’t hurt me.

I have a dry robe. Never been in the sea as an adult, but live on coast, walk my dog there twice daily every day. (Or more) Great coat for wet/windy/cold days. Deliberately didnt get one with big print on it anywhere. I suffer with cold sores so the bigger hood helps to keep the sharp cold winds off my face a bit better in the winter months, and the wind is always worse at the beach than at my house a couple of miles away. The big pockets for poo bags, phone earpods, money keys etc are great. Got fed up with coats being waterproof but when the rain was heavy, it ended up running into the pockets which weren't waterproof then running down my leg.

Went to meet a friend for coffee one day after my dog walk wearing said coat, ordinarily would just wear it for a dog walk, but I wasnt going directly home after the walk. A woman I know in the coffee shop made a snarky remark about my coat, like 'where are you going '...i said just had my head blown off at the beach walking the dog. Up to that point never had anyone say anything about my coat. Initially irritated by it...then thought I couldnt give a damn, not going to explain myself to her or anyone else. Honestly wish it was less cumbersome but when its freezing cold, wet, and windy im so glad of it. If other people don't like it...tough.

Currently have a foot injury so along with being a DRW ...it seems im going to have to get myself some crocs ! 😋

And another thing. I bought a coat last winter when it was cold. Navy blue quilted, with a fur lined hood, down to almost my ankles. Roomy enough to accommodate a warm jumper. Yes, its got sleeping bag vibes.
But, its so toasties. I do not give a shiny one.
I'm going to guess you aren't as old as me. You need to care less what others think.

So to be clear

You were in town in a wetsuit, dryrobe and crocs

😂😂😂

I think they’re horrible, particularly the neon pink and camouflage one, however they don’t offend me and I certainly wouldn’t laugh/take pics or anything like that.

Laughing at the thought someone thinks it’s envy.

664eek · Yesterday 15:28

I don’t think anybody is offended. I suppose some people associate them with a particular sort of person but who cares?

I have one for swimming. I wouldn’t wear it as a coat and don’t get why people do (please don’t tell me) but that’s up to them.

StillgotmyiPod · Yesterday 15:28

I think as others have said they've become a bit of a hallmark of a certain type.

Usually the DFLs braying at Jasper and Araminta in the deli aisle of Waitrose before piling into their heavily-financed hybrid tank (complete with tent box*) to go and cause chaos for some poor farmer with their spirited untrained cockapoo or labradoodle.

  • I live in Devon and reserve "tent box wankers", along with dry robe wankers, for those who commonly have a car bigger than they can handle and who can't reverse it.
TheChosenTwo · Yesterday 15:31

I think they’re fine in context, I go open water swimming in a lake a few times a week and use mine regularly in the colder months but only to whip my wet swimming costume off underneath and then drive home starkers underneath it! I wouldn’t then stop off at Tescos on the way home wearing it 😂
Ive seen people wearing them on the tube with proper clothes on underneath, it looks silly to me but not enough to bully anyone for.
i treat mine as a towel, for me it’s too heavy and drafty to use as a coat, it would be impractical.

likelysuspect · Yesterday 15:32

Needmorelego · Yesterday 14:28

It's just a coat 🤷
@notadryrobewanker I am curious where you are in the UK because my first thought was "isn't she hot?".
Down here in SE London everyone is back to vest tops and flip flops 🌞🌞🌞

I'll be wearing mine later because I'll be swimming, its freezing once you come out of the sea

TheFishFish · Yesterday 15:32

I'm not offended by them, but they do look fucking stupid when not used for their actual purpose.

People dicks! It’s more
trendy to hate them or pretend to hate them than it ever was to wear one.
I am an open water swimmer, and live by the sea and have owned one for years and years and bloody love mine. Keeps me warm and dry and gives me privacy to change on the beach.
And there’s no way I am taking it off when I pop into the shop or wherever on the way home just because the coat police get furious when someone is seen in one more than 5m than water!

That’s ok, you don’t need to!

:) thanks!! Its years since I cared about what anybody thinks about my choices in general!!

ilovepixie · Yesterday 15:37

So what if people wear one for non swimming related activities. Why do people wear trainers when they aren’t going running or track suits! They are warm waterproof and comfortable. Live and let live.

Kimmielee · Yesterday 15:37

I have also worn mine at night when camping,
in the pissing rain at the kids rugby and football matches, and used it as an emergency picnic blanket or seat on wet ground.
How dare I!!!!

FeeLipa · Yesterday 15:38

DD lives in Cornwall and considers them fine for after sea swimming or paddle boarding. She mocks me relentlessly for wearing one for dog walking in London. I don't care though. They keep my legs and bum warm when it's freezing and are amazingly waterproof. I've been in torrential downpours and have only gotten wet from the water running own the back of my calves into my muck boots.

Your commenting on my post about thinking they are ugly suggested otherwise really. But you are right not to care, the world would be a boring place if we all liked the same things. And whilst crocs will always be hideous I’d never tell a stranger walking around town that their wetsuit, dryrobe, crocs look wasn’t my thing.

AgnesMcDoo · Yesterday 15:42

I have honestly never heard anyone being rude about them.

obviously if they are then they are arseholes

Greekgoddess2000 · Yesterday 15:43

I think it’s because to cold water swim or dip, especially in the UK in winter it actually takes a lot of courage and fuck it-ness and so when people where them when they’re not dipping it kinda looks like bragging rights when they’re not doing the hardcore part?

Either way, it’s all BS and people should be able to wear what they want without twats commenting

theblame · Yesterday 15:46

People are weird. Yes I was in Tesco wearing one nowhere near the sea. I had just been swimming in the reservoir and was freezing and hungry so I stopped to get some food before I drove home
it was being used for its intended purpose!
