to not get why people are so offended by Dryrobes?

I was picking up a parcel at my local InPost lockers in town today, and overheard someone commenting on my Dryrobe. It’s the first time I’ve heard anything myself, but there’s loads of Facebook groups for laughing at “Dryrobe Wankers”. I know that they’re not everyone’s cup of tea, but so what? Why do people are so much about the coat a stranger is wearing to the point they are making social media shaming posts about them?

I'm not remotely offended by them, I didn't give them as second thought, I've got one and it is useful sometimes but I only have one because someone bought it for me.

They look absolutely bloody stupid. Everyone looks a nob in them. Some people buy them to do a job, great, and some buy them because they think they look good. They don't. As long as you don't go thinking you look good in one, no problem, because you dont! 😅

StillSpartacus · Yesterday 15:49

Firstly, people should and can wear what they like to keep warm and dry.

But lol lol lol at the idea that dry robes are middle class, posh or exclusive.

Hankunamatata · Yesterday 15:50

Live my regatta knock off one. Its not heavy, waterproof, keeps me toasty. Big enough to layer underneath.

Im going to have to Google what a dry robe is!!

Yeah same here

Timeforachange26 · Yesterday 15:54

Can say I've noticed anyone wearing these tbh. Ugly things. .

Marketing genius

Someone started the joke, people thought they were very clever and witty by mocking Dry Robe

Now they are absolutely EVERYWHERE , and people have realised it's much more than a fast fashion statement. Can't be beaten for waterproof and warm.

Joke is on the ones still banging on about being negative. It's funny really.

people don't look good in big winter coat either 😂

Sometimes it's not about "look", it's the weather!

What weather? It's not been cold for months on end?

Im going to have to Google what a dry robe is!!

Its a hideous coat, that was first designed for open water swimmers to put on it the cold like a giant long cover up to keep warm.
Yet these coats have leaked out into the community people go to the shop in them, most are bright camo and pink, and say dry robe on the back.
There is a whole fb page called dry robe walkers, where people take photos of people wearing them for anything but open water swimming! Its hilarious

I haven't seen many people wearing their dry robe during the heatwave to be fair

notadryrobewanker · Yesterday 16:00

My wetsuit was a short one and the dry robe was zipped up so the wetsuit wasn’t visible if that makes a difference. It was for walking 10m from a car park to an InPost locker and straight back to the car. If my fingers actually worked on the InPost screen then I’d have been gone before I’d overheard a comment.

people wearing waterproof, comfy and warm coats in the winter, how hilarious indeed 😂

Dry Robes are unbeatable in the winter for normal activity (not climbing a mountain obviously), there's a reason why they are so popular.

ShowOfHands · Yesterday 16:03

I am cold all the time and gave in and bought one. I wear it at work when I'm doing duty (my duty spot is on the field and the wind and rain whip across and make the whole thing unpleasant). The students like to mock me as it's v bright and patterned but it does make me highly visible. I also wear it when camping or after swimming in the sea.

I don't fit any of the stereotypes and I don't particularly care. It's colourful and warm. All I really care about.

🤣 depends on where you are. It’s never been warm in Scotland and we are definitely now into BIG coat time of year.

I was even contemplating gloves yesterday.

SweatyGibbon · Yesterday 16:05

From what I've read online over the last couple of years, I think there is a perception that people who wear them are quite well off, and a bit 'up themselves'. Which is probably unfair, but it's what some people seem to think.

Why is it hilarious? I genuinely don’t get the joke. Why are we taking pictures of strangers and posting the online for mockery for the sin of wearing a coat you don’t like? It’s only a joke if everyone is laughing and like another form of bullying to me.

And I swim in open water, but sometimes I go to run an errand before or after a swim. You wouldn’t have known that as I collected my Vinted parcel this morning. Not that it matters anyway. People don’t need to show their credentials to wear a coat.

WC, outdoors woman here, and I couldn’t give a damn what anyone thinks of me being warm, dry, cosy, able to change privately on beaches, by the river etc. !

It’s a LOT of men doing this. The original group
was shut down because posts were abusive and very misogynistic and clearly invading privacy of the mainly women these men were photographing.
The current one actually has people calling themselves DR wankers on it and saying how much they love their coats etc. much nicer vibe

Fair enough. I wasn't saying I believe in the stereotype, just that it's what some people seem to think .

mindutopia · Yesterday 16:18

I think they’re jealous because they’re cold!

I have one. Okay, well, it isn’t a Dry Robe, it’s a local brand of swim robe that costs half as much and I absolutely wear it on dog walks and to do outdoor jobs and to do the school run. I also sea swim year round, so I always have it in the car in the winter because I live in Cornwall and I never know when the water may call!

I do have some sense. I once went to a wedding and someone was wearing one for the evening do as was in a village hall and chilly. I wouldn’t go that far. But I am a legit all year round cold water swimmer and have been since before it got trendy and I deserve to be warm and dry. Anyone can judge, but I just think, ooh, you don’t look as toasty as me. 🤣

Happysnappydays · Yesterday 16:37

ilovepixie · Yesterday 15:37

So what if people wear one for non swimming related activities. Why do people wear trainers when they aren’t going running or track suits! They are warm waterproof and comfortable. Live and let live.

That's a good point

people think all kinds of dumb stuff.

Jerrybalanitis · Yesterday 17:23

Dryrobe when not swimming is a wanker but nobody is allowed to say the same about the poorer people who walk around in tracksuits having clearly never entered a gym or eaten a vegetable in their lives because its mumsnet, you are only allowed to ridicule certain people. The dryrobe wankers probably pay for those grey tracksuits hanging off those pasty arses a hundred times over in their high rate tax contributions so I know which wanker I prefer and it has a full set of teeth.

OchreReader · Yesterday 17:39

Themsofcoffee · Yesterday 14:48

It's taking the piss rather than ppl being offended.

There's also Tentbox wankers, which seems unfair because the Tentbox owners are using them for the intended use.

And the wolf fleece pisstakers. Who are evil but also a bit funny.

Oh yes, the wolf fleece appreciation society 😂 I often laugh at it, knowing I’m probably going straight to hell

Obeseandashamed · Yesterday 17:40

I would never feel the need to comment on what somebody else was wearing but personally I dislike the text across the back. I love how warm they are though so opted for the same style in a different brand. My son has an original dryrobe though.
