What do you mean?

DundeeNewcastle · 27/09/2026 20:34

Oh behave!

EmailsaysOOO · 27/09/2026 20:34

What is autumn decorating?

Parabendum · 27/09/2026 20:36

No, but I have moved out of my “summer” knickers and into my “winter” knickers, if that counts for anything.

Stompythedinosaur · 27/09/2026 20:36

I'm just here for the people wanted to say how awful it is to decorate for autumn.

But I have indeed put out a couple of decorations and shifted to my autumn wax melts, and I don't care who judges me! I shall continue to take whatever small pleasure I can from life!

Sandrine1982 · 27/09/2026 20:37

What is "autumn decorating"???

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 27/09/2026 20:39

I have put new batteries in the fairy lights and bought some flowers in a colour I consider autumnal. That’s basically all I ever do!

IAmNotAPickyBit · 27/09/2026 20:40

I haven't (I don't decorate) but a few people have autumn wreaths on their doors around here.

(You'll have to ignore those on MN who never partake in such activities and will go out of their way to make you feel as if you're the weird one for having interests that differ from their sphere)

YourAmberExpert · 27/09/2026 20:41

Make it stop

DeftPeachSloth · 27/09/2026 20:42

I'm going to be the first to judge.
Autumn decorating is mainly a social media trend that was started by companies gifting influences autumnal homeqre ideas to get people to buy more.
I don't do it, and strongly advocate against it because it is usually single use plastic, over consumption items that will end up in landfill.
Your 'small pleasure' is actually having a huge impact on the earth. It makes much more sense to get your pleasures from outside nature things.....created by actual autumn.

PhoebeBuffay1234 · 27/09/2026 20:42

I have! I’ve got my autumn cushion covers on, my autumn flower arrangement, some faux autumn leaves (that I got free after a wedding) that go in my large lanterns around my candles. I’ve also got an autumn wreath for the door and some ceramic pumpkins. I’ve also got a plastic pumpkin thing that I’ll get down from the loft too. I’ve had that since the kids were tiny. The rest of the stuff I’ve had for many years - in case anyone comments ‘plastic tat’ and ‘environment’. Oh and I am often housebound so these small things bring a little joy to my life.

Edited to add - I see they’re already here!🙄

cityliving99 · 27/09/2026 20:43

I started decorating the downstairs loo in the Summer, I still haven’t finished it! Autumn decorating? Do you mean adding spicey candles, different cushions and a red leaf garland? No point, it will soon be Christmas!

AmethystDeceiver · 27/09/2026 20:44

we've lit the wood burner tonight - instant (and sole) autumn decoration!

Yes this! I just bring down my bag from upstairs-just a few pumpkin ornaments, leaves, candles and little hedgehogs (I have a 7 year old so it's fun to do)

Is this bad 😔

Okay...I have a bag upstairs which has had autumn ornaments & candles etc since my Dd was very little, nothing is thrown away, we just like to take joy out of life, wherever we can get it!
i have the same at Halloween, Christmas & Easter

I put a fire down for the first time tonight, does that count? Was lovely.

Purplestarballoon · 27/09/2026 21:46

I put out my ceramic pumpkins on 1st September this year and some of the previous years autumn crafts that the DC have made. A lot of the stuff I decorate with is things from nature like conkers and twigs and crafts the kids have done, so the decorations build through the next few months. Love this time of year 😊

I read an article today that says we are not meant to own knickers for more than 12 months. Not on the original topic but still.

Was that based on research by the Association of Knicker Retailers?

I’ve got knickers that are older than DD.

I always interpret decorating as painting or wall papering. I think you mean, you have put some decs out? Enjoy your bits and bobs!

FitAt50 · 27/09/2026 22:28

This sounds rather 'common', akin to Christmas Eve boxes and putting up your tree in November.

RaraRachael · 27/09/2026 22:31

I couldn't be bothered decorating my house for all these occasions. I didn't realise it was a thing and I wouldn't have room to store all the tat anyway.
The only decorating I do is at Christmas.

SersioulycanitgetWORSE · 27/09/2026 22:32

No op ,but I do decorate inside and out for Halloween. It feels too early in the season yet for me it's still very warm.

However esp with ilyoung children and smaller homes it's nice to change the decor when you can and jazz things up isn't it !
Homesense does amazing stuff.

I read an article today that says we are not meant to own knickers for more than 12 months. Not on the original topic but still.

I still have a pair of knickers I bought in the late 90s and I am not dead yet. In fact, I am often quite surprised I haven't spontaneously combusted given how many things we are not meant to wear, use, and eat.

But to answer your question, OP, the only decorating that is happening in my house is the actual...decorating. Upstairs is gutted out and I am hoping to finish one room next week. Though I toyed with an idea of making a wreath, I honestly don't think I have it in me. I am still negotiating with my cat about upcoming Christmas to see if he feels like leaving the tree alone this year.
