I have finished, is it too much?

Edited

No, I think you could add a little more, you know, just to add that certain something :-)

bababamama · 28/09/2026 21:04

I wore a summer dress, no cardigan today, it’s definitely not autumn yet. The only autumn “decoration” I do is to switch duvets from summer 4.5 to the 10.5 we use for the rest of the year and I tend to use the darker duvet covers

SanFairyAnnie · 28/09/2026 21:11

Will be changing cotton throw over sofa to woollen one with matching cushions to make the room cozy for winter. Also floral reed diffusers for musky ones and nothing Christmassy until December 1st.

ProfessorofDarkArts · 28/09/2026 21:26

@SharyBobbins my conkers are just in a wooden salad bowl, I think it looks quite rustic ☺️

Waitingfordoggo · 28/09/2026 21:30

I resent having to put decorative shite up at Christmas, I’m certainly not doing it any other time of the year.

I don’t care what other people do in their own homes, but if they’re buying new stuff every year, then I am judging, especially if it’s plastic shite from B&M/The Range/Temu/Tiktok/Shein etc.

ToysRus56 · 28/09/2026 21:47

I think it's so lovely to mark the changing of seasons - why not. Forces us to stop and notice what's happening in the natural world. Isnt it rooted in pagan tradition too? My mum would always forage for greenery to fill the house, so I do the same if I have time. I have a small child so our mantle piece is covered in acorns and conkers too, and today I found some fallen down branches of an oak tree beginning to turn which I popped into a vase. I can understand why others find it unnecessary, but I think it makes me feel appreciative of and excited about the time of year we're in. Of course, sometimes I just don't have the time, and that's fine too.

Londonrach1 · 28/09/2026 21:50

Not sure what you mean. Are you repainting. You can do that any time..spring, summer, autumn or winter.

HeyThereDelila · 28/09/2026 21:51

Stop trying to make this a thing.

I'm enjoying the posters pretending they can't possibly work out what "autumn decorating" could possibly refer too, great work!

Read the thread then…tell you all you need to know, then you won’t be so baffled.

Lifelover16 · 29/09/2026 07:20

No. I think it’s tacky and unnecessary, done by people who are taken in by influencers/retailers who want to sell stuff.
A waste of money and resources and especially in a CoL crisis.
However I would display crafts made by kids at school, or some natural items - conkers, autumn leaves in a vase etc.

HoldMyWine · 29/09/2026 07:24

I might get my winter duvet out of the loft. Otherwise everything in my house remains the same as the rest of the year. No one needs more plastic tat in their house.

MyManinCaracas · 29/09/2026 07:27

My mother was putting out autumn decorations 30 years ago because it gave her joy and I have continued the tradition. It’s my home and I will do whatever I want.

ErlingHaalandsManBun · 29/09/2026 07:27

I don't do it but don't have a problem with, or judgement about, anyone that does.

Its a struggle when we start to lose light, and the weather starts to changes, so if making your home feel cosy and autumnal gives you some pleasure, and makes someone feel good, then why not?

I keep my decor the same year round other than at Christmas when all my usual stuff goes into boxes and my Christmas stuff comes out and I LOVE doing that.

Each to their own.

Is it a tad early though to be doing it? Another few weeks at least I would think. But I get people wanting to make the most of the season.

MyManinCaracas · 29/09/2026 07:28

And considering how many MNers shop at Primark it’s a bit rich to be banging on about “plastic tat”

My Mum did this too when I was young. She took pride in her home and she loved to change the decor with the seasons. In the autumn, out would come the autumn colours and cushion covers, branches along the mantel that she would decorate and the curtains that were light and thin for Summer would be replaced with darker thicker ones.

It gave her so much pleasure. We would go to school and come back and find she had done it all and it was nice for us kids too.

She loved doing it and I have memories of how happy it made her.

So much judgement on MN 🙄

The people that come on a thread and make a comment just to judge and make comments that are not necessary.

If you don't do it, then why click on the thread?

We have a collection of pine cones, hazelnut shells, leaves and twigs that dgc collected that are slowly making their way back out of the door!
We did make some fairy pictures with some which went home with them as a present for dd sadly mummy declined the spare treasure.

nighttimemusings · 29/09/2026 07:41

I did mine a couple of weeks ago as it won’t be long before I change it again for Christmas- changed my door wreath, throws, cushion covers, swapped some ornaments around for more Autumn colours, didn’t buy anything new. Like a poster above my dp we’re doing this years ago, changing things summer fabrics to warmer ones to suit the season, it’s not a new thing

edited for spelling

Crockof · 29/09/2026 07:44

It is all new for me but I have bought some from the shops (and will reuse next year)

I suffer from SAD, I dread the winter - it was a friend that suggested breaking it into manageable bits, and doing something to mark it.

I have enjoyed it, I am far too old and have no children at home, but I'm nearly a month in, I'm going to do a bit of Halloween next month and then there will only be one month to Christmas.

And then there will be only TWO months until Spring, and then without realising it I will be through it all.

I'm loving seeing what people do and how they decorate - it is pagan to mark the seasons, I laugh at those that are so judgemental.

Happyjoe · 28/09/2026 21:00

I hate these fads. Sorry.

It’s not really a fad. My gran had winter and summer curtains and cushions, and that was in the 70s.

This is just an extension of that thinking.

And if it makes people happy, then why not?

ProfessorofDarkArts · 29/09/2026 09:39

People have always changed their homes with the seasons, it’s really not a new idea. It’s just that now the shops and influencers have caught on and are trying to monetise it and make it a thing.

notedbiscuits · 29/09/2026 11:09

I do something and it’s keeping the same decor all year round. I don’t have mugs, cushions, bedding, ornaments, wreaths, tablecloths, wall art etc which is changes every season.

I bet most of you sling the stuff out and start again next year. As most of this stuff is bulky
