I have bought a candle and some more blankets for the sofa

Icanflyhigh · 27/09/2026 22:35

WTF is autumn decorating?
Behave!

PumpkinWanker · 27/09/2026 22:37

As per my username I love decorating for autumn and will be commencing so on Thursday the 1st. Exciting times.

I'm going to be the first to judge.
Autumn decorating is mainly a social media trend that was started by companies gifting influences autumnal homeqre ideas to get people to buy more.
I don't do it, and strongly advocate against it because it is usually single use plastic, over consumption items that will end up in landfill.
Your 'small pleasure' is actually having a huge impact on the earth. It makes much more sense to get your pleasures from outside nature things.....created by actual autumn.

Just so I'm clear, precisely which part of me putting the clay mushrooms my dc made as toddlers out of a cupboard and on to the piano is having a "huge impact on the earth"? Is the fact that they are autumnal somehow what makes this so much worse that other people's use of resources?

Lovely piece of uninformed judgement, I hope it made you feel really superior! I guess this time of year brings us all pleasure in different ways!

For me autumn decorating would be fire, logs and blankets, fairy lights. It was 23 today so it’s a while off yet!

Ijwwm · 27/09/2026 22:47

These types of threads always generate a good sneer 😂

Celebrating the changing of the seasons is woven into our history. Yes, the way it’s done may have changed, but it’s not a new thing. I think some people like to spout “plastic, tat, landfill, etc” just for the hell of it.

I do a change twice a year - spring/summer and autumn/winter. Cushion covers and curtains mainly, plus a few bits and bobs. That I’ve had for years. It switches my living room and bedroom from warmer colours to lighter colours. Gives the rooms a switch up with no expense.

I tend to change when the clocks change, but that’s not written in stone, depends if I cba that weekend.

Will keep an eye on this thread, if only to eyeroll at the usual judgy, faux what is this comments.

bannabead · 27/09/2026 22:48

I do decorate for Halloween though

marmitegirl01 · 27/09/2026 22:48

Yes thank you I have!

Haha, I don't do autumn decorating, but I'm not going to judge you for it 😂 Whatever you like to do in your house is great and I am sure looks cosy and seasonal.

However, I will judge you for declaring autumn already!! I am absolutely not ready to write summer off as finished. It still feels very much summer here, spent the week walking along coastal paths, wearing short shorts and T shirts, sunbathing on the beach, eating ice cream. The beaches are rammed with people still, all enjoying the glorious weather. Restaurants/cafes full of people sitting outside all day and into the evening. People still full of the joys of summer, all happy and loving life. Still very much a summer/holiday vibe.

mondaytosunday · 27/09/2026 22:49

There was another thread about this a couple weeks ago. Aside for the unhelpful ‘what’s that’? posts the consensus was no it’s not too early! My foliage either crochet (by me) pumpkins and candles are in the mantle, a swag is across the back glass wall overlooking the garden and my foliage and dried flower wreath is on the front door.

Crispynoodle · 27/09/2026 22:50

Say what now?

If I could change my curtains I would. We got very heavy velvet type curtains thermal a few years ago. Too heavy to have up in summer but we can't change them over because our curtain poles in the wall are too weak. So we are stuck with thin summer curtains .however I'd love to go further and change curtains and cushions all over yes. And rugs. We have a deep coloured rug all year id love to change it to lighter in the summer !

BirchOakHawthorn · 27/09/2026 22:57

September 1st is when I start putting my Autumn decorations up. Mine are mostly handmade by me whilst watching TV in the evening. I don't see the harm.

bannabead · 27/09/2026 23:09

It does make me laugh how everyone has handmade decorations that are years old, someone is buying the tat that is in the shops.

Buzzlightfear · 27/09/2026 23:19

I've got the electric blanket out and downloaded Gilmore girls for my bi annual autumn watch. Does that count?! Enjoy your decs op :) it's always good to celebrate the changing of the seasons however suits you imo

I read an article today that says we are not meant to own knickers for more than 12 months. Not on the original topic but still.

Why?!?!! I truly want to know the reasoning.

I have a few pairs that are decades old! They seem to be lasting forever, unlike the new ones I bought last year which fell apart and had holes in them very quickly.

Ditto socks.

TheSmallAssassin · 27/09/2026 23:23

It is autumn, so if you want to decorate for it, now is the time. I don't and won't, and I don't know anybody who does, so I think it's pretty unusual, but don't let that stop you.

Fledgedup · 27/09/2026 23:29

I change the wreath on my front door each season and yes, the Autumn one went up this week. I don’t buy 4 a year, before the landfill police come at me, the other 3 wait patiently in the loft for their season to turn each year and they’re good quality so have lasted several years.

Bite me, seasonal haterz 😁

RobertaFirmino · 28/09/2026 00:03

Christ, no! It's hard enough keeping the house clean and tidy as it is, like fuck am I creating extra work for myself!

Daisypod · 28/09/2026 00:13

I haven’t yet but plan to this week. I hate the end of summer and the nights closing in but changing the bits and pieces around the house from summer to autumn make it feel more cosy and welcoming of the new season.
Cusion covers, wax burners, a few crocheted pumpkins and my fake flowers (dh has terrible hay fever so I can’t have real ones in the house) get switched from pinks and cream to orange/red colours. I have a couple of boxes that I use for storage so when new stuff gets put out the previous seasons get put back in the same boxes.

Notthisagainyouidiot · 28/09/2026 01:01

I've changed the wreath on the front door.
Frankly I'm more concerned about the knicker thing though.....

I bought mine from the shops initially. But I’ve reused them for years.
