I always turned my nose up at autumn wreaths but now I'm making one!

MajorSamanthaCarter · 29/09/2026 12:58

What is Autumn op?
The last thread on this subject was a complete shit show of sneering and claims that only "thick, poor people" decorate for the seasons.
Apparently my handmade items are tat as well 🤷‍♀️
If there's an ounce of enjoyment in something MN can suck it dry. You can't win.

I read an article today that says we are not meant to own knickers for more than 12 months. Not on the original topic but still.

I have some knickers that are over twenty years old. Still wear them regularly.

I don't decorate for Autumn (although we're DIY renovating a house which is a year round activity, including Autumn), but do have some vintage French Halloween decorations that go out every year a few days before Halloween and stay out till immediately after Bonfire Night. Also a set of glass baubles in Halloween colours that I hang from some twigs in a vase on the kitchen fireplace for the same few days.

I'm not a fan of seasonally themed homewares (bedding, cushions, throws, ornaments) as I love the carefully chosen bedding, cushions, ornaments we have out all year. I wouldn't want to be constantly swapping them for something that would stick out like the proverbial sore thumb in our home.

But if others derive pleasure from doing it, that's their prerogative.

I've decided to start a pumpkin collection, adding one a year and have just bought a lovely hand made one from an independent ceramicist. Bite me.

Agree @MajorSamanthaCarter that last thread was a wild ride!

Yes we made an autumn wreath, have bowls out of amber coloured glass now filled with conkers, have swapped fresh flowers for pumpkin candles, swapped bed linen to ones festooned with mushrooms and pumpkins, and swapped cushion covers to autumnal colours, and put up fairy lights. Brings me immense pleasure

No pumpkins or door wreaths, but I did have a pint of mulled cider over the weekend. Does that count?

It does indeed. Anything for the cause is allowed x

Thanks. In that case I might just have another one this weekend. Can't let the side down.

No, but I have planted my autumn seeds at the allotment, ready for spring.
I don’t decorate at home for autumn and, in the past, I would probably have been quite grumpy about unnecessary seasonal extras. But my DS and his GF have just bought their first home together, and it was such a joy to see them so happy and settled in it.

They’ve been having fun making it their own, with a pumpkin doorstop, an autumn wreath, and a little set of wooden shelves they made from logs. They’d even baked banana and cinnamon muffins, complete with tiny autumn toppers.
Delicious on our first visit for tea!

The wreath and pumpkin will be packed away and brought out again next year. But the lovely thing wasn’t the autumn decorations; it was seeing two people enjoying their first home, making memories and simply being happy together.

Sometimes it really is the simple things. I am not going to be that grumpy to moan!

maddiemookins16mum · 30/09/2026 13:09

I wouldn’t call it ‘decorating’ per se, but at the weekend the Autumn cushion covers are going on (hedgehogs peering through a pile of Autumn leaves) plus the throws (Just leaves) will come out. I’ll also get out my pumpkin tea light holders. That’s it. Tbf the current (summer flowery ones) cushion covers need a wash as pretty sure there are the drips of a long since eaten Cornetto on one of them). Come December the Christmas covers/throws etc will appear.

Just put some pumpkins out now it’s October!

Greenmouldycheese · 01/10/2026 23:13

I dont care who judges me but I have! I have my autumn wreath on the door, garland in the living room and a few maple 🍁 decs. In two weeks, I will also be getting the halloween decorations and pumpkins out. 🎃 makes my kids happy and I love it. Tk max earns a fortune from me.

NeverKnowinglyUnderstated · 01/10/2026 23:17

Got my autumn wreath on the door, my autumn hanging basket is looking very lovely next to it. I have my little autumn gonk out, and the candles are lit. I love it.
And then, in the last weekend in November, it will go up in the loft and all the Christmas decs will come down....I love it! 🍂🍁🎃

YankSplaining · 01/10/2026 23:35

Yes I have! Got to decorate my younger daughter’s school library, too. There may even be a couple small pieces of – shhh! – “cheap plastic tat!” 😂

I'm going to be the first to judge.
Autumn decorating is mainly a social media trend that was started by companies gifting influences autumnal homeqre ideas to get people to buy more.
I don't do it, and strongly advocate against it because it is usually single use plastic, over consumption items that will end up in landfill.
Your 'small pleasure' is actually having a huge impact on the earth. It makes much more sense to get your pleasures from outside nature things.....created by actual autumn.

Not in my house. I have a storage box and my autumn decorations (mostly handmade) come out every year. Judge away. I don't care!
