To not buy her a tail, so she can be like her friend who ‘is a therian’

My ten year old has a friend who seems nice and has sane sensible normal parents and yet she wears a tail and tells my daughter she’s a therian. I’m not in any way happy with all the furry rubbish and this feels along the same lines. My daughter has now asked to be a cat for Halloween, then asked for a furry tail as part of her costume, and now I think it’s actually so she can join in with her friend. They are only ten so it’s likely just play but there’s no way I’m letting her go out in a tail 🙄.

This is why I’d nip any of this in the bud; even more urgently if my kids were ND as they seem to be even more susceptible.

I strongly suspect the child is ND. The older boy has shown several instances of sexually inappropriate/predatory behaviours, I hope to god the two things aren't linked. She is an ex friend due to the stuff her son has done and their reaction (or lack of) to it.

Kids don’t get bullied hard enough these days 🤣

Furry/therian "culture" is heavily sexualised and pornified online, pretty sure that's why a lot of mothers don't want their daughters wearing tails & ears in public. It's very much a sex thing for the adults, and they get off on seeing young kids joining in.

It's also just weird and too infantile for 10 year olds. They're still kids but well past the age where they should be wanting to be in fancy dress all day long.

Would you take them, aged 10 to a forrest dressed in ears&tail to crawl about?
If I witnessed that I would be disturbed.

this, were their parents informed that’s what the plan was I wonder?
if someOne told me they had plans to take a group of kids to a “secluded forest” so they could watch the dc dress up as therians and crawl about on the floor on all floors, it would be a hard no (and a hard drive check request!)

I know loads of young 'therians' and it's just creative play 😂
They make masks and wear tails and gallop around the park on all 4s.

The moral panic over this is so strange. No, schools are not having to install litter trays because children are identifying as cats...

Hmm the bloke I saw on nothing to declare (airport tv programme) was wearing a tail and was a furry and had quite hardcore cartoon animal porn in his luggage.

myheadsjustmush · 27/09/2026 10:48

It might not be 'just a fad'.

There is a girl in my DD's secondary school who wears a tail and tells everyone she identifies as a cat. 🤦

Embarrass the shite out of her! Say 'what a wonderful idea! I shall join in', buy yourself a tail too and take her to school, wearing a tail, that is you wearing a tail. All the way to school and especially by school gates proceed to meow and if you care flexible and can bend, arch your back every now and then, if full view of other parents. That will quickly cure her of her idiocy.

Edited to add: Explain to her that if you are a cat and she is a cat, then daddy is also a cat and enlist his help with cat-like behaviour. And put a tray in the house and make her use it.

Edited

I attended a pride parade where a large adult man dressed as a cat with tail, ears, mask etc participated in the parade. At the after event the trailing tail proved too much for an inquisitive Labrador and the scenes were hysterical.

I am furious reading this. I have a 17 yr old vulnerable daughter. She was bombarded with trans and gender idelogy from the age of ten, as she was a bit of a misfit she was the perfect candidate for this mind altering process.
I am thankful that she finally accepted herself. Some of her friends didn't. They're traumatised, have soured relationships with their parents, insisting on using male names and pronouns. Now they are reaching 18 they're going down the legal route to transition.
The 3 friends have an ASD diagnosis. Surprise, surprise.
I blame the adult, the government, the schools, youth centre's for pushing the agenda on teenagers who have MH issues.
I saw a young girl wearing fury ears and a tail recently, I thought the parents need a bucket of ice cold water dropped on them.

I remember a post on here where the OP had a child who was a wolf. This was pretty much her plan - only meat for dinner, and no watching TV etc. because wolves don’t do that. I wonder how long the phase lasted!

Perhaps he ate her!! 😱

My daughter wears tails. She's 12 and has done since the age of 9 or 10. They clip to the side of her jeans or she clips them at the back. I will not force her into some toffee-nosed ideals, so she can end up like the basic-in-beige brigade. I want her to have freedom of indepdence and creativity. I doubt I would allow my child near anyone like you, because you sound toxic/a bully. This is how other children end up bullying - Starts with their parents who go on the attack when they don't understand something.

They are literally kids playing at dressup, but present day has given it a new 'technical term'. Did you never pretend to be an animal, as a child!?

My daughter has a massive friend group and they all collect tails, or various kids quirks. She even takes commissions for animal drawings she does, because I've encouraged her to express herself and that has led to a world of encouragement and learning her skillset...she's now making a bit of money from it.

So, you can either stop repressing the women of this world; or you can encourage your daughter to be herself, instead of squashing her inside your own convenient, basic and bland box.

Don't be a snowflake.

"They need a bucket of ice water dropped on them"

Well, I believe parents like yourself should have their children taken from them. You are blaming everyone for your child's independent decision. You don't like something, don't understand it, probably found it difficult to educate yourself, and are now lashing out at everyone instead of challenging your struggles with understanding.

pigmygoatsinjumpers · 27/09/2026 11:20

Why can't people have legitimate concerns about how a 10 year old has come across the word "therian" and is applying it to herself (and perhaps also wondering whether the child's parents are aware that she is talking to other children about "therians" and whether they are encouraging her in "self expression") without those concerns being twisted into being opposed to all "imaginative play"?

Encouraging your child to conform with the latest fad in order to fit in isn’t encouraging independence and creativity. If there are a large number of 12 year olds in a single school wearing tails and pretending to be animals then this isn’t self-expression. It’s no different to the 90s when all the girls walked around with Take That merch and inflatable handbags or the 2000s when they switched to ultra low slung jeans, butterfly g-strings poking out the waistband, jelly bracelets all up their arms.

I did pretend to be an animal as a child, but not at 12 years old.

Which is why I would be wary about what this is actually about and what the underlying drivers are.

OP, I would be fine with this as a Halloween costume or just messing around at home, but I agree with your instinct not to make it something she does in public normally.

What is "creative" about a 12 year old wearing furry tails?

If she has a massive friendship group who are also wearing furry tails then she's just following the group - not showing "independence and creativity".

It's no more "creative" and "expressing" herself than if a group of friends all wear similar hair accessories or all want the same bag.

There is indeed a lot of naivety from some posters on this thread.

@ChilliBassy As others have said, there’s nothing particularly original or creative about kids jumping on to a trend that they’ve seen on TikTok. It’s just another tribe, like all the other tribes. It’s an ‘alt’ one rather than mainstream, much like the goths and emos of the 90s and 00s. These type of tribes often appeal to neurodiverse kids. They also tend to be more middle class than the ‘beige’ mainstream trends. I don’t know why you seem to think your child’s tribe is superior to all the other tribes. Perhaps it’s you that’s ’toffee-nosed’ (hilarious phrase, feels very Enid Blyton).

But again, being a furry or a therian doesn’t make someone a paedophile, I explicitly said children shouldn’t be exposed to kinks or anything sexually inappropriate. But I very much dislike the insinuation that kinks are so awful, that children are almost being sacrificed to it to try and make it appear more normal to the rest of society.

Yes we should call out paedophilia, grooming, child abuse.

We should not kink shame adults.

For the record, I’m not into that, but what I am into would probably make you clutch your pearls.

Tbh, you sound about 12 with that response 😂

The reality is that some children are being sacrificed by a predatory minority who try to erode their boundaries via porn for a variety of reasons.

Posters have explained upthread about the porn links with furries etc and lots of others have pointed out that little children playing at being cats, dinosaurs, helicopters etc is perfectly normal.

Kink should be nowhere near children and if it takes shaming those promoting it for children, then so be it.
