My bf had been on the piss since football yesterday and I didnt hear from him all night

I’ve got 3 kids with my bf, ds is 5, dd is 2 and youngest ds is 8 months. We live together, not married or anything. He works and I’m at home with the kids. Yesterday he went football with his mates at 12.30 and obvs I knew he’d be drinking because thats what they do when they go football.

He came home later on in the afternoon and he’d clearly had a fair bit already. I thought he’d just stay in then tbh but he went back out again later on. I was a bit annoyed because he’d already been out all day really but I didnt tell him he couldnt go or anything. He said he was just going out for a bit and I thought fine whatever, I had the kids anyway.

I last heard from him about 10pm. After that nothing. I messaged him a couple of times and rang once then again later but nothing. At first I wasnt that bothered, I thought he’s probably on the piss and cant hear his phone or something and I didnt want to be that girlfriend constantly asking where he was. But then it got later and later and I still hadnt heard anything.

I had the baby waking up and the other two were up and down as well and I kept checking my phone thinking surely he’ll have messaged by now. I was getting more annoyed every hour really. Its not even like I needed him home to help at that exact moment, I just thought when you’ve got 3 kids at home you would maybe let your partner know you’re ok. I started getting worried as well which made me even more pissed off.

He finally messaged after 12 today saying he was coming home. He got in and he was still absolutely pissed. Not just a bit hungover, proper drunk still and looking like he’d been on the piss all night. We had a little row because I was asking where he’d been and why he couldnt answer his phone and he was basically saying he was fine and I was making a thing of it.

Then he just went upstairs and went to bed. So now I’m downstairs with the 3 kids while he’s asleep it just feels like he’s had a whole night and morning off and I’ve been doing everything. The baby is 8 months so obvs its not exactly like I can just switch off and go to bed either.

I dunno if I’m being dramatic because he is allowed to go out and have a drink and I dont mind him going football at all. I dont even mind him having a big night with his mates really, although going back out after he’d already been drinking did piss me off a bit. But not hearing from him from 10pm until after 12 the next day seems different to me. Maybe I’m being unreasonable but surely you can send one text saying you’re ok?

Its just doing my head in because if I’d gone out at 12.30 yesterday and stayed out all night, then come home still pissed at lunchtime and gone straight to bed, he’d be absolutely raging. I know that doesnt mean I’m right but thats how I’m looking at it. I dont want a relationship where he cant have a night out, I just dont think having kids means you disappear for 14 hours and dont answer anything. Am I being unreasonable for being this annoyed or would you be pissed off too?

I’d be livid!

PurpleLovecats · Yesterday 16:16

I’d be seriously reconsidering my relationship…

NaiceCupOTea · Yesterday 16:18

You know you're not being unreasonable but you know that.

I presume this isn't the first time something like this has happened?

RoniaCheetah · Yesterday 16:19

I don't think you're annoyed enough OP. He's taking the absolute piss. Sounds like he still hasn't even told you where he was.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · Yesterday 16:21

Of course you're not being unreasonable.

I'm going to be the first one to state the obvious and point out that you are in a very vulnerable position being a stay at home mum to three children and not married, because you have no claim on any of his assets if the relationship breaks down or if anything happens to him. Have you got any money yourself, in your own name? If the relationship broke down, how would you cope financially? Has your partner made a will and nominated you to receive his pension if anything happens to him? Has he got life assurance? That would be a start, although he could change all of that if he felt like it.

Dweetfidilove · Yesterday 16:21

YANBU to be pissed. I can't abide anyone who needs to get drunk, let alone someone who does it regularly. What a terrible influence for your children; and a substandard partner for you.

Again, yanbu; but you must decide if this is the relationship you want. It's unlikely he will change any time soon. If this is unacceptable, seek support to leave. If it's not, then you just have to accept this will be your life (if only when the football is on) and skip the rowing.

Freeme31 · Yesterday 16:22

Absolutely disgusting can you take the kids and go to a hotel for the night like him completely disappear and don’t answer your phone. At least give him a taste of his own medicine. He only does this to you because he knows he can, and that there will be no consequences for him. He obviously has no respect for you or your children. You need to sort this now or it will be your life. Is he normally so selfish ? Does he genuinely not want to be a family man ? Maybe get an STI check too. I feel sorry for you as you obviously want to be a good parent and stay with your children but you must know deep in your heart this behaviour is not acceptable. Can you go yo your parents for a few days or does he just get off scot-free with a bit of a row ?

Pollqueen · Yesterday 16:25

He is totally out of order. I'd go MIA for 14 hours next weekend leaving him with the kids and then dump his immature arse

Loloblue · Yesterday 16:26

You must know that this is all shades of unacceptable. He's an immature prick.

DahliaDelights · Yesterday 16:30

He's not in a relationship. He doesnt prioritise you or think about you or his children before going out on the piss overnight into the next day.

He doesnt see himself as a partner and father, a family man.

UnintentionalArcher · Yesterday 16:31

@LunarViper Disgusting behaviour on his part. You deserve better. Totally unacceptable with small children and completely disrespectful to you.

Goodadvice1980 · Yesterday 16:35

You are in a very precarious situation. Do you have financial independence?

daysofpearlyspencer · Yesterday 16:38

You have 3 kids with him, no security and no career. Looks like you are stuck with this waste of space drunk for a good few years.

Grumpyoldcat · Yesterday 16:38

It happens. Be as noisy as possible and hope he has a mega hangover. If its an infrequent situation Id let it go.

lostatsea15 · Yesterday 16:41

Next weekend is your night out, leave him to it, stay with a friend or family/hotel. Let him have the joy of 3 kids himself

Hopefulsalmon · Yesterday 16:52

I'd be furious. But what's your financial set up - do you have an income of your own, do you rent or own jointly? Because as PPs have said you are in a v vulnerable position as an unmarried sahm; he's currently holding all the cards and from the sound of things knows it.

Yetone · Yesterday 16:53

Do the children have any drums? Would they like to practice outside of his bedroom?
As others have said, you know that you are not being unreasonable. You need a serious talk about shared responsibilities.

LlynTegid · Yesterday 16:55

Absolutely unreasonable, even if the children were teenagers it would be.

You are allowed to go and watch football and not drink- the excuse it is a lunchtime game is enough.

Vaguelyclassical · Yesterday 16:56

Do you ever get to have a night out with your own friends? Does he ever offer an ounce of help with his children? Or even play with them?

Glitchymn1 · Yesterday 16:58

If he said upfront and it’s a one off (and you them too) then not great, but ok. If not he’s living a single batchelor life. Where was he?

Cheese55 · Yesterday 17:01

This is always such bad advice. I doubt she trusts him with the kids, especially without being able to check, and who wants to be away from an 8 month year old anyway?

Yes…I’ve learned a few things from mumsnet over the years. These are never isolated incidents. It’s always a pattern of behaviour where the man barely contributes to the family, doesn’t value what his partner does, doesn’t think his life should change after children (and it doesn’t), and is incredibly disrespectful. If you earn the same or less that your partner, don’t have children without being married, and never give up your job. Also don’t get involved with a man child… What’s done is done though. You need to put yourself in a better position, I doubt this man will change. The bottom line is that a woman always needs to be able to leave a relationship. You are so vulnerable if you can’t.

ladyjaynes · Yesterday 17:04

Just reverse the roles here. How angry would he be if you did this?

BlueFahrenheit · Yesterday 17:10

Why would you have three kids with a man like this?

Well it's a bit late for that stupid fucking question! I'm pretty sure OP didn't have a crystal ball 🙄
