AIBU to find pet-friendly cottages impractical if dogs cannot use furniture?

I’ve been looking at ‘pet friendly’ holiday cottages in the UK to take our dog and pretty much all of them say dogs are not allowed on furniture or in bedrooms.

I don’t think I know anyone who’s dogs don’t jump on the sofa so how are you supposed to mange this - take loads of covers or just stay at home?

The modern, selfish dog owner. "My dog can do what it wants, when it wants, wherever it wants because it's my dog and screw everybody else". We left a pub recently because someone's dog s**t on the floor and stank the place out. They laughed it off and expected the staff to clean it up.

Don't get me started on the furbaby-calling, baby-talk, dressing up, carrying everywhere or pushing in a pushchair.

I take throws, my dog is pretty much non shedding and he gets his feet and belly washed after a muddy walk anyway. It annoys me when I go to pet friendly lodges and they are smelling of dog or a bit grubby especially when most places charge a supplement for pets/extra cleaning.

@Butterflyfluff there seems somewhat of a debate here over dogs being ALLOWED on the sofa vs dogs that just jump up.

We have always trained dogs not to jump on the sofa. Otherwise it's so rude if you go to someone's house and they just jump up! But we do allow our dog on the sofa; it will jump up when invited.

It's not hard to train a dog to jump up onto a sofa only on command.

Also, fabric sofas that have had dogs sitting on them stink! It's grim.

Dog friendly properties should ask people to bring a throw with them so the dog can sit on the sofa.

I get more annoyed by properties that won't let you leave the dog unattended in the property. Our dog is old and doesn't want to go out with us all the time so needs to be left so she can sleep. Plus lots of kids venues are not dog friendly.

This is a hard one - for every dog owner who knows their dog will be absolutely fine, there are owners who really don't care that their dog will be crying or barking for the hours they are left and a panicking or distressed dog is very likely to cause damage.

Unfortunately they spoil it for everyone.

They’d lose my custom because of that.

Them's the rules. If you don't like them stay home.

Spent 8 months in an Airbnb when we had to move out of our house. Bought loads of throws for the sofas as couldn’t keep them off them. Line aired every day washed twice a week. The sofas sticky brushed and febreezed as at home.

What on earth holiday properties are you staying in???

Both, I imagine. Although, as @YeOldeGreyhound said, dog owners seem to pay far less attention to their dogs bum holes (other than picking up poo!) than other people.
And no @BakersKitchen no cognitive dissonance here at all. I know exactly what they do and don’t do. It just doesn’t bother me and I’m never unwell. And it doesn’t affect you or anyone else in the slightest so I can’t see why it bothers you. You can think it’s gross all you want, it has no effect on me or mine 🥰

I do think (I live in Cornwall) this rule partially explains the horrendous number of dogs struggling in the middle of the afternoon in heatwaves this summer!

I wash my dogs bottoms when they’ve had a poo. Don’t want it on my sofa blankets or anyone elses

I mean it's trained to obey you isn't it? Ours was never allowed on the furniture at home or upstairs so this rule applied when on holiday

I think you are absolutely right.

I trained mine to only get on the sofa or bed when invited. They give me the big eyes or put one paw up and I give them the nod to jump up. You can teach it pretty easily if they're smart and want to please.

How though?
