AIBU to find pet-friendly cottages impractical if dogs cannot use furniture?

I’ve been looking at ‘pet friendly’ holiday cottages in the UK to take our dog and pretty much all of them say dogs are not allowed on furniture or in bedrooms.

I don’t think I know anyone who’s dogs don’t jump on the sofa so how are you supposed to mange this - take loads of covers or just stay at home?

What it means in practice is that if you leave the place covered in dog hair they will charge you.
We have a low malt dog and take throws for sofa and bed. Never had an issue.

Single malt dog 😆

I stay in air B&Bs 2-3 times a year, take throws etc.

Never been an issue, never been charged for anything. And mine is one of those dogs who moults once a year for 365 days.

Yes, weight or height?

Yes, weight or height?

Some would use breed, which definitely isn't necessarily logical.

I agree. As an example, greyhounds can vary from 20kg to 40kg.

We have a 25kg working line lab. Some can be twice that weight (as well as a little under). Ours is light for a male though!

stargirl1701 · 18/09/2026 20:26

Our dog is not allowed upstairs to bedrooms or on our furniture.

Noodge · 18/09/2026 21:25

I agree about size classification. Mine is classed as a. 'Giant' dog but I know of more than several breeds much larger than her.

Do people really have dogs in the bed, under the covers? 😮

Yes - mines a terrible pillow hog 😂

Fulbe · 19/09/2026 00:11

I know someone who owns a pub, and customers have let their dogs sit on the seats and piss on them several times without making any. This is probably to avoid that situation. Although there are responsible dog owners, there are many dog owners who think their dog could never do any wrong - whereas everyone else sees them as a menace.

Smiile and nod at the rules. Make sure you give the sofa/bed a brush off before you leave so there's no visible hair left behind.

Unless they have hidden cameras they've no way to know whether the dogs been on the sofa or not!

Making any what?
Also dogs don't pee while sitting down. Are they sure it isn't a customer? Someone (a human) pissed on a seat in my local recently.

My dog wasn’t allowed on sofas or beds, no way would I want to rent a cottage that has had dogs in bedrooms or on the sofa.

Nor me. I don’t need pet hairs or a dog smell on the furniture, if I’m paying for an Airbnb.

But, owners sometimes ignore the rules, so I just make sure I book non animal cottages etc

Omg. My dog was never allowed on furniture. I think that is gross. I’d hate to stay somewhere where animals have sat on the sofa etc.

Why is it gross? Our cats sit on the sofa and leave more fur than our cockapoo. He doesn’t smell ( I do understand what other breeds do which would change my view perhaps). We all love a cuddle with him and actively encourage him onto the sofa so we can snuggle.

Dogs are such a stress busting, calming influence - there is nothing better after a day at work than a dog snuggle on the sofa.

Don't know what happened there, meant to say "without making any attempt to clear it up". Yes certain it was not the customer, it was where the dog was sitting. Now they have waterproof covers for the seats.

Itsabyenow · 19/09/2026 07:55

FWIW OP I don’t have dogs and don’t even like dogs and wouldn’t allow them in my rental property - but if I did, I’d do so with the expectation that they use the furniture!

It’s why I don’t stay in hotels that allow dogs, I know all sorts go on in hotel rooms with humans lol but personally I don’t like the thought of dogs having been on /licked the hotel beds, headboard, sofas etc

I find it hard to believe dogs don’t do these things in hotel rooms and tbf to them why should they not if they’re allowed in?

If I had a dog which I don’t and wouldn’t ever get one I would expect it to sit on the sofa. But as I said I wouldn’t get one for that reason lol

I think it’s gross because their paws touch the ground . So the paws on a sofa is like me putting my shoes on a sofa! Plus some dogs lick all sorts and then with the same mouth/tongue they have used to lick or sniff say vomit or shit with they come and put that on soft furnishings and then finally they shit (and don’t wash daily or wear pants obviously) then they come and plonk their mostly unwashed bare rear on a sofa 😂

estrogone · 19/09/2026 08:05

I used to take my cat AND my dog away (they both passed last year). The dog was used to, and preferred his bed. The cat, another story. She would sleep where she pleased. We would lock her out of bedrooms but no choice about the sofa.

What are our thoughts on cats on sofas?

neverendingnonsense · 19/09/2026 08:41

My thoughts are, make your own rules at home, stick to the rules of anywhere you’re a visitor and don’t worry about what anyone else does or thinks.

I have a dog. Just train the dog to do as it's told. Dogs walk and roll in all sorts of stuff, will eat anything, lick anything and some owners don't worm/ de-flea their dogs. Whilst we can all do what we want at home, I think it's really unfair to let your dog lie on someone else's furniture with just a bit of fabric beneath them.

I'm really surprised at how selfish some people are.

Divebar2021 · 19/09/2026 08:51

I don’t have my dog on the furniture or upstairs to the bedrooms. There’s enough animal hair in this house to add to it. We’re lucky that so many places actually let dogs in nowadays so I’m not going to complain or take the piss with rentals. I do think it’s a pain when you can’t leave your dogs unattended in a property but I know a lot of scummy dog owners don’t house train their animals properly so I dare say there’s good reason.

Divebar2021 · 19/09/2026 08:53

Letting dogs on the seats on public transport is also scummy behaviour as far as I’m concerned.

Until public transport only allows clean passengers, ban food, and ban people from putting their bags that have been everywhere too

then am ok with dogs as long as they dont' steal my seat 😂

Basically people just need to be more considerate really, whether it is a well behaved passenger or a well behaved dog owner,

neverendingnonsense · 19/09/2026 11:18

A lot of things people do on public transport are disgusting. Feet on seats, filing nails, picking noses, vomiting, coughing without covering their mouths, weeing and so on. We could have a humans are disgusting thread that covers everything.
