AIBU to find pet-friendly cottages impractical if dogs cannot use furniture?

I’ve been looking at ‘pet friendly’ holiday cottages in the UK to take our dog and pretty much all of them say dogs are not allowed on furniture or in bedrooms.

I don’t think I know anyone who’s dogs don’t jump on the sofa so how are you supposed to mange this - take loads of covers or just stay at home?

Well someone is probably going to come along and tell me I’m awful but I’ll just put towels/ throws on the furniture and hoover before we leave. My dog normally sits on my lap anyway!

I have dogs.

when we ended up having four children I gave up professional work and bought a holiday let.

I have had one issue with dog poo in garden, and one issue with a ruined duvet and linen set. From dog owners.

The most damaging guests I have had are kids. Ribena poured onto bed and into radiators. Sharpie on the sofa, a knocked over TV, milk poured into a wooden table and left.

you get good guests, normal guests should I say, and you get some that just don’t care.

lol! No. At home I change the throws every day and put them in the dog washing machine. I have yet to find a holiday rental (other than mine!) which has a dog washing machine, so I take new ones to use every day, then take them home, wash them in the dog washer and use them as normal.

As I said, some dog people cannot understand the revulsion some of us feel about dogs in beds and on sofas etc. They are happy to let dogs lick their faces too 🤢

There is plenty of accommodation out there that doesn’t accept dogs. So if someone can’t bear the thought of being in property where dogs have been, why would they book somewhere that markets itself as being pet friendly?

Mattress protectors exist. Stop being vile.

I’m making a general comment about how disgusting the behaviour is. I definitely don’t go out seeking pet-friendly accommodation! I stay in hotels rather than cottages and air bnbs anyway where the risk is somewhat
lower.

Yep. Mine lick my face everyday. I credit them with the fact I haven’t been ill in decades 🥰

So why don’t they protect people from dogs having been there too?

in all honesty the whole property had a whiff of dog after a dog has been there. Not just the mattress but that’s the worst one, trying to sleep while smelling dog

As a dog owner I can categorically guarantee that mattress protectors do not protect against dog hair! And….not against “other” human stains either!!!

Of course they shouldn't be using furniture so just train your dogs better or accept you cannot take them to other people's homes. Fact is though: how will they know unless they have spy cams and they can't admit that, can they.

How do you keep your dog off the sofa? I put mine down every time he climbs up but he still gets back up when I’m not looking & seems an impossible task.

Well we DO allow dogs on sofas and provide throws for guests to use. Very nice ones too apparently judging by the regularity with which I have to replace them ..

As for dogs upstairs - well we don't encourage it but I turn a blind eye. I'm not there to see what owners do and they will allow their dogs upstairs or not as they will.

The carpets are all scrubbable and I don't have floor length curtains

Same. Our old dog wasn’t supposed to go on the sofa, but she was sneaky enough to wait until we were out and then jump up. I caught her at it at least once by peering through the window after she thought the front door had safely closed behind me.
I dare say it pissed her off that the cat was allowed on the sofa, so I couldn’t altogether blame her…
