AIBU to find Dawn French's latest Trump comments more sad than funny?

I can't link Dawn French's latest rant, about Trump, but, if anyone else has seen it, do you find it funny. Or just feel very sorry for her?

I may not have read that far, as I said. I'll do that.

But I can understand people feeling angry, given that you appear to be minimising French's comments about mass murder, and have cast those who are disgusted by those comments in the role of a 'baying mob'. As I said, if she was in an argument with Trump, I wouldn't blame her for losing her temper, so I'm not sure I see the irony you mentioned earlier.

You clearly have read all the posts Otterly, not sure why you're pretending otherwise.

The insults directed at me are up there for you to see. Calling them 'curt dismissals' is minimising.

I have reported a couple.

The responses you have gotten are alarming, to say the least.

I agree, I can't even concentrate on what she is saying due to the gurning and baby voice. I just don't watch her now.

I struggle to even watch her old stuff now, her video on the Hamas attacks was so repulsive and the baby voice and gurning frankly makes her look unhinged.

I actually hadn't, thanks. I'd skimmed through pages 3 to 6 of the thread, just picking up on comments that interested me, and not reading every single one.

I have now, working my way through, and no, I can't see anything particularly abusive. Rude? Yes, but then you've been rather rude in places too. Either way, I'm not really seeing the irony myself.

I think it's a little odd that you said that 'the baying mob are out for her blood'. That's really interesting. What do you mean by that?

Dawn French is obviously massively talented and creative and part of that is her ability to be unfiltered and spontaneous so it means that not every thing she comes out with will be a gem or liked by everyone. It's not sad I don't think.

But then you're mocking everyone who is incontinent, not just Trump.

Sorry, I should have been clearer. I don't think it's OK to mock people for a physical or a mental disability or illness. Personally, I wouldn't do it myself. However, Trump has proved himself to be lower than a snake's belly when it comes to personal attacks, always at the expense of people who cannot fight back, so I really don't care if someone goes as low with him. Not a terribly principled stance, but there you go.

Smokeywater · Today 14:00

It’s really hard to be funny -even harder for women - so I’d let her off

JoustingContest · Today 14:05

She's so desperate to be liked, I suppose I should feel sorry for her but her fawning over Palestine and belittling of the "bad thing" (little girl voice, comedy sad face) Hamas perpetrated on October 7th leaves me no choice but to see her as a truly vile and stupid person.
Can't be arsed to listen to her Trump diatribe - yawn a sleb denigrates Trump (while ignoring all the shit the Democrats do)- how brave.

Hi there,
If people on this thread could stop exercising their various personal enmities and get back to discussing Dawn French and her mad clip, that would be great. Of course we understand that not everyone likes each other on Mumsnet but it's just boring for other users when you ignore the topic at hand and drag fights from one place to another. Please stop it.

I was truly shocked when I watched that video, the one mocking the slaughtered children. I haven't watched her latest debacle, heard about it here, and will never listen to another word she says.

But I will keep reminding anyone I can of what she said, and how she said it, any chance I get. Anytime I am ever online and see her name mentioned, I'll bring it up. Some things are just unforgiveable.

I'm glad you did - I was unaware of it. Thank you. Although I wish I was still blissful ignorant, it's so upsetting.

Re this latest "video" - it looks like dementia to me, quite honestly.

ETA: I just looked this up. Apparently she is now experiencing misophonia, which has been linked to an increased risk of cognistive decline.

Dappy777 · Today 14:11

I am torn. On the one hand, I loathe Donald Trump. He is the ugly American incarnate. On the other hand, I hate smug, sneering, sanctimonious left-wing celebrities SO much that I enjoy seeing them upset.

Even mumsnet staff thinks Dawn comes across as mad in the clip 😂 and I agree, or maybe she is drunk like others have said. Something is off about it if it’s real.

I didn't say that at all, just to be clear. I agreed there was rudeness.

But I was curious about your comments. Never mind!

I'd rather they mocked him for something that didn't also imply that innocent people are worthy of mockery and disgust - they could decide him for his alleged crimes and his awful actions, or even his fashion sense, rather than medical conditions that people can't help. But fair enough.

I thought it was funny. The USA has a sitting president who shits his pants on the regular.

Making fun of him is not sad, it's justified.

You need to follow epistemiccrisis on Instagram if you don't know what DF is talking about. He highlights DT as having dementia and everything that goes with it

CossyBunt · Today 14:36

Gosh she’s such a privileged, unfunny twat. Isn’t she also the one with a second home in Cornwall or Devon? Donald trump will not see her stupid ramblings and he wouldn’t care anyway, but other people whose loved ones are incontinent will do and she’s mocking them.

One of the best blunt mod responses I've ever seen on here!

She doesn't owe you humour, she is allowed to make a video without trying to impress you

When did I say she wasn't allowed to make a video without trying to impress me?

She has and it didn't. I'm allowed to say so.

i don’t think it’s funny. It’s a bit lazy if it’s supposed to be comedy. Politically she’s probably not far off the mark. I think its inconsequential really rather than sad.

Yes, she was mildly funny (sometimes) in the 80"s, can"t imagine why anyone would be interested now? I remember even in the 80"s they did sketches mocking famous pop stars etc. I remember watching them doing a piss take of Madonna and thinking it was just tedious, nothing worse than comedy that thinks it is smarter than it is.

Yes, I think she has some serious issues. Her comments on the Hamas attacks were unforgivable. I'm sure I won't watch any of her old stuff now, but in actuality I don't watch much anyway. I do get the impression that in her videos she is either drunk or on drugs. She just doesn't present as sober and i've worked with a lot of people drunk or high on drugs.

I have never made any secret of the fact that l have no respect whatsoever for Donald Trump and all he stands for and some jokes and memes about him can be very funny but there are limits and when people cross over the line from being funny to sheer bad taste, boundaries have to be drawn. I am a moderator for an international Facebook group with many American members. Someone made a post about Donald Trump that many members found insulting and drew it to the attention of the admins. I deleted the post, drawing attention to the fact that politics play no part in the group and that we should be kind to each other. I then made a general post to let people know about it. The (American) poster of the original post then made a comment on my post about "bringing all the MAGA types out of the woodwork." He had no idea of my own views and that l am as far from being a MAGA type as it is possible to be and that l am British in any case. I have suspended him for three days.
