To think that the dressing gown was one step too far?

In a petrol station buying a coffee at nine thirty in the morning. Looking down realised that the young woman behind me was wearing obvious pyjamas. And slippers. Then looking up to see a fluffy cream dressing gown.

I can't decide if it matters. I was brought up to believe that it shows a complete lack of self respect, and a lack of respect for anyone else, but does it, these days?

YABU. Perfectly normal wear for filling up your car.

Hard agree OP. You are not my friend who described Bethnal Green in the early 2000s as “the kind of place where you see people outside in their pyjamas” are you? (It’s come up a bit since then, or at least the pj wearers have been outnumbered!)

I just saw a woman in a pink fluffy dressing gown, leopard print PJs and Ugg slippers in Ikea this morning.

Everyone was doing double takes.

Oh you'd have' kittens if you lived near me. Once the weather turns at the end of the month, the standard 'uniform' for school will be plaid pj bottoms & Uggs. The kids look comfy and cozy, not something I can get offended about.

Shower: many people shower at night. I personally do. I find people who get into bed without showering disgusting. Does everyone also need a morning shower?

Teeth: you can brush your teeth in your pjs

Deodorant: you can put on deodorant in your pjs.

are the pajamas themselves dirty? I wear a fresh pair every night.

I personally am not out filling up my car in my pajamas, I just don’t get why people think these people aren’t clean.

The one and only time I wore this attire out was in Australia, very early in the morning. I gave my husband a lift to the train station to travel to the city for his job. We just missed the train so I had to drive him into Melbourne CBD & on the way home I broke down. A bloke on a horse took pity on me & fixed the hose in my car, he was mildly amused at my pyjamas, slippers etc. Never again!

Slippers would baffle me, they’re for indoor use only and once you start walking around the streets in them they’ll pick up really gross dirt and bacteria... Possibly even dog poo. I’ve never owned a dressing gown, I think they look slovenly.

I used to work with a woman who would boast about not having got dressed at all at the weekend, because she wasn't going out anywhere. I really couldn't understand this. She had pretensions to upper-middle-classness too. I can't imagine being that sloppy.

l love that! Brings back great memories. Those ladies would NEVER go to the shop in their nightdresses though.

Mum and adult daughter (I’m guessing) in Aldi this week about 2pm in full PJs / slippers / dressing gown.

I was like WTF?!?!!

My auntie picked me up from PRIMARY school a million years ago in her slippers by accident, in her car, that she didn't get out & she still gets mortified thinking about it 😂😂

I used to see it a lot in schools I've worked in but it's definitely dropped off a good bit, it's more jogger/leggings/gym wear now, personally I wouldn't do it*, I
just see no difference in time saved or having a "lazy day" by wearing leisure/lounge wear to pop to the shops or whatever?

*putting out the bins is different though I think

It’s takes no effort to pull on joggers, t shirt, hoodie and trainers. No smarter, could be filthy and slept in but at least it’s showing a little decorum

I dont really care - ive learned to be less judgey in my elder years. Its none of my business - there could be a whole host of reasons for this, including, quite simply cba. Could be a dare. Health related. Clothes stuck in washing machine. Helping someon in crisis out. On way to/from hospital.

Some jammies and gowns cover a lot more than some of the more risky/skimpy pieces on the move. Loads of outfits I cant tell if its clothing or loungewear or jammies. Who knows and who cares.

I think it's weird and very lazy.

How nice to be able bodied. It might take me all day to actually get just pants and socks on, nevermind jeans that I'll actually likely never be able to wear again.

Tesco is two minutes away, would I like yo go there in my pj's? Absolutely not. If my kid desperately needed paracetamol you can bet your arse I would.

40 years ago i worked at the place where people sign on for benefits i worked there for years and for years the same people would come and sign on im PJ's and dressing gowns and slippers clearly not looking for work, it still winds me up to this day

I think it's very lazy. It's not hard to put clothes on. The last time I went to Spes savers two ladies were in there getting eye tests etc in short pjs. I wouldn't pop to the shops in PJs yet alone a big shopping mall.

When I was young (nearly fifty years ago) we moved to a different part of the city onto a council estate. It was a garden estate and the original occupants were dying or moving away and young families were moving in. My mum was well aware of the standards maintained by older residents. They washed their front steps on a certain day. Washed their whites on another. Maintained their flower borders and lawns. Kept the hedges trimmed etc. My mum's neighbour claimed another neighbour dried her knickers in doors as they weren't ever seen on the washing line 😆.

Anyway in my opinion we've gone too far the other way.

It is a change from previous decades. My father won't go downstairs in slippers.

On the one hand, I do see it as declining standards, but on the other hand, it maybe isn't the one that matters so much?

Once upon a time nightwear would have been seen as overly intimate wear to go out in public in, but in reality, someone in a fluffy dressing gown is probably easier on my eye than one in her gym kit with a crop top and lyrca leggings with ruching up the bum crack. It starts to become a bit artificial to condone one and not the other.

And I always have a shower before getting in my pjs, whereas in my gym kit I am sweaty so there's probably not much in it in real terms.

I think this is about where I was. If rather see her in that than arse-crack leggings from the gym or masses of flesh on show in hot weather.

There has been a trend for sort of two piece playsuits that look like pjs? Like matching shorts and short sleeved top ...
