If the bride isn't bothered should I be?

Bride is a good friend. In our group we have had notice of her wedding for nearly 2 years and it's 3 months away. She gave us ample opp. to rsvp with Save The Dates, has kept us up to date with the planning and it's well known she's ordered the favours and seating plan now as well as paid for the entire do with no help and lots of saving up. She invited our friendship group ( all of us are ages 29 to 32 so had a fair few weddings between us now ) and let us all invite our partners. One friend who has form for being spectacularly selfish messaged the group chat yesterday when bride posted to us all to say she isn't coming anymore and has booked a holiday instead as it's the only time she will have to do this with her work schedule. Bride didn't reply at all but another friend said 'wowwww' which i don't necessarily agree was helpful. I saw bride today and she admitted it was really bad form but shrugged and said she will just need to amend the seating plan ( at a fee as ahe already agreed and received the final print ) to remove them and wont get a refund for friend and her boyfriend. She shrugged it off and said at this point what can she really do ? And she wants no ill feelkng before her wedding. Friend can get quite defensive of her choices. I do agree with this and it isn't my wedding but I have to see selfish friend tomorrow at a small group meet up and I don't know what to say when it's bought up, which it will be. I think it's really bloody rude but if I tell her this will it go against my bride friends wishes? Bride friend is lovely and doesn't deserve to be walked all over just because she wont say anything and I find it hard to be fake and pretend someone's not been rude when they have.

Yabu - leave it alone and bite your tongue
Yanbu - she's a cf and needs to know it isn't okay

I had a go at a friend for the exact same thing 20 years ago. It wasn’t really worth it, it didn’t change anything.

Chilly80 · 09/09/2026 19:47

She clearly wants drama or she wouldn't have announced it in a group chat, she'd have privately messaged the bride with her apologies.

Ishehe · 09/09/2026 19:50

It is rude as she’s accepted - so it’s not etiquette. However she must need a holiday over a friends wedding? Depends how close they are. There’s friends I would choose a holiday over going to if it was the only time I could go on holiday. But others no way- I would never miss !

VimtoPrincess · 09/09/2026 19:51

I would say nothing, post some pics on social media showing you all having a great time and then return the favour when its her big day if some poor fella marries her. But then I am very petty.

seahorsessky · 09/09/2026 19:56

Bride is correctly not arguing with her over it, but that doesn't mean she's asked you to say it's fine. Respecting her wishes means not causing drama, not acting like Miss Entitled is actually not a bad person. You don't have to speak to her, or get drawn into a discussion, or lie that it is ok.

Best way is to say nothing. I feel holidaying friend is looking for attention and might be delighted if things are stirred about her not going to the wedding.

Say nothing, and tip off anyone else there to do the same. I reckon holiday girl might be surprised that her actions have not caused ructions at all. She is insignificant right?

Oooooo this is diabolical. Op, this. Absolutely this.

Mix56 · 09/09/2026 20:20

Bride for once is being completely un-Zilla, Thank the Lord

MongoosePerfume · 09/09/2026 20:32

Like others have says, don’t give this oxygen. But I would also talk about the wedding and how much fun it’s going to be at every opportunity. Make the plans, send all the photos. She’s the one missing out!

Ponderingwindow · 09/09/2026 20:42

It’s 3 months notice. Caterers and event spaces rarely require fixed head counts that early. If the bride had a seating chart printed too early that is her own fault. Life happens and this probably won’t be the only change.

Radioheads · 09/09/2026 21:40

diddl · 09/09/2026 19:08

I think it's unusual that three months notice isn't enough not to lose money isn't it?

Not sure we'd even sent invitations out at that point!

That's not to say it's not rude of the friend to holiday instead.

I guess she's not such a friend after all.

Agree.
3 months?
Loads of notice.
I would have thought final numbers were nor more than a week or two before max.

PollyBell · 09/09/2026 21:46

It is not a royal wedding, but no idea why you need to feel it is a thing anyway nor have any idea? why on earth you feel the need to interfere to say something

RockinCara · 09/09/2026 22:04

Don’t say anything. None of you. If she mentions it just change the focus and talk about how excited you are to go to the wedding and how it sounds like it’s going to be amazing. I’d be tempted to say similar on the chat. Let her end up feeling a little left out. I’d also be tempted to continue this after the wedding. When she brings up her holiday just say oh lovely, but you should have seen how gorgeous X’s venue was, we had such a fun night, it was amazing.

DrinkFeckArseBrick · 09/09/2026 22:09

Going against the grain but just because bride wants to appear unbothered I don't think that means you have to pretend that you think ita fine as well. I think it's fine to say something along the lines of you are pretty sure bride has paid for everything and finalises all the seating plans now so you've probably given her a headache in having to reorganise stuff and pay for stuff she's not using, which no bride needs in the run up to their wedding

Newname26 · 09/09/2026 22:21

I can hardly believe the Bride has got a printed seating plan 3 months before the wedding and the formal invites have gone out.

3mths takes us to December, its a busy month for most and it's when lots need to use holidays by.

I don't think the holiday friend is being unreasonable. Most venues won't take final numbers to a couple of weeks before the wedding also 3mths is plenty time for Bride to fill the space if she wants. There is always someone who is on the edge of do I don't I invite them.

Ohnobackagain · 09/09/2026 22:25

You can always say something after the wedding @HaveYouMetMissBones or say “oh did you reimburse the bride for having to amend the plan/for food?”

Edited

The food won't be paid for most venues won't take final numbers until a week or so before the wedding

Bride was being far too fast ordering her seating plan, why would anyone do that before formal invites have gone out and reply back?

Totaldramallama · 10/09/2026 07:47

Why are you all friends with someone who you would describe as spectacularly selfish?

I honestly don't think it's selfish to pull out a wedding with 3 mths notice.

You have not idea where the other girl is going on holiday, or what else has lead up to her wanting a holiday in December, location, partner, family illness, study exams.

Nobody ever truly knows what else is going on in someone's life.

FellIntoaCake · 10/09/2026 09:14

nutbrownhare15 · 09/09/2026 18:32

You could ask her how much money does she think the bride has lost on their meals.

She could. Or she could behave like she lives in real life and not a soap opera.

DontEatTheMushies · 10/09/2026 09:31

Just leave it.

I would be like the bride tbh. What would getting upset achieve? But then I personally think that we put too much onto who does and doesnt go to weddings. Its just a massive expensive party,

But the person msg the whole group is a bit aholey. Surely she would CALL the bride directly.

Katalica · 10/09/2026 09:41

I tend to slowly drop people like this as friends.
You know they’re selfish and at some point will either bad mouth you to others or treat you badly too so gradually distancing yourself would be my suggestion.

FellIntoaCake · 10/09/2026 09:51

Do you never stand up for anyone else?

Not if they've specifically said to keep out of it.

WaryHiker · 10/09/2026 09:57

Your friend who's getting married sounds absolutely lovely. The very opposite of a bridezilla. Good for her!

Sheena99 · 10/09/2026 10:01

Appreciate where you’re coming from
and would normally advise to address it, but if the bride doesn’t want anything said, for her sake and a peaceful ramp up to the wedding I’d say nothing.

gamerchick · 10/09/2026 10:08

Completely ignore it. If it's brought up just don't engage. It's as if she won't be missed at all without a word spoken.

Don't feed any beginnings of drama.
