Because Brexit , for which Farage was a leading advocate, put a stop to the UK being able to send the boats back. Before Brexit there was a returns agreement in place.

But for God sake, the Dublin agreement and losing it through Brexit has nothing to do with the numbers we’ve seen since then. How many did we return under that agreement? Maybe 300 a year maybe 200 a year? I don’t have the exact figure to hand and I’m supposed to go to bed so I’m not going to look it up.

The increase in boat numbers coincided with increased security measures in French ports. As soon as traffickers realised it was safer (for them), easier and cheaper to send out a boat from a deserted beach than get a handful of people in a lorry that was likely to be searched before it boarded the ferry, then of course numbers went up. They started rising before Brexit happened.

Farage is undoubtedly responsible for lots of things. And I think terrible things will happen if he gets his grubby little mits on any real power. But he’s not responsible for this. People seem to think we were returning dozens of people every day and the figures prove that wasn’t the case. There was very strict criteria that had to be met before anyone could be sent to another country, which is why France isn’t returning larger numbers of migrants to Spain and Greece and Italy.

Farage backed this to the hilt. He stood down his Brexit party candidates in 2019 in Tory leaning constituencies to pave the way for Boris' big win. We always needed immigrants in this country and Brexit turned off the supply of white European immigrants which led to the Tories opening the door to the rest of the world. The boats crisis and huge legal immigration numbers are the fault of the Tories, Farage and his contemporaries. Everything he has argued for and supported has led us to where we are.

People used to come in lorries now they can't they come in boats. You could stop the boats overnight by turning off the scanners and then people would quickly revert to hiding in lorries
