AIBU to think parents should lose benefits /homes for persistently antisocial children?

This has been suggested, im not sure if it will happen , but i think this is a great idea, if the parents think they will lose their council house and benefits , they may attempt to to control their feral offspring .

My friend is in a local harriers group that starts at a local sports centre in the rough part of town, they are now having to stop their favourite route because of gangs of young teens who intimidate them , run along side them and are abusive, one delightful boy said “ lift your legs higher you c**t ,

How have we come to this ?
Do you think it will make any difference ?

I would remove child benefit from them too , maybe this will force them to parent if they risk losing money or their home

Obviously not all the parents are bad, but virtually all the awful kids round here riding motor bikes with hoods, abusing people are from the council estates near by

Im absolutely sick of it, and sick of decent people being targeted by them

What rules /sanctions would wise mumsnetters suggest ?

And how will that help? The scummy families won't care and we'll end up with a bigger mess of homelessness to unpick.

And the parents who have been desperately asking for help / more money to support their dc's will be chucked on the scrap heap.

We could fund more police officers on the ground, sure start, youth clubs, work experience in school. But that's all long gone now.

Boomer55 · 02/09/2026 07:31

But, having worked in that field, some parents just refuse to engage with any help offered.

They are completely uninterested. 🤷‍♀️

IDontFeelLikeDancinn · 02/09/2026 07:31

I don't think this system would work or actually help.

But I too am sick of the ASB in kids seen these days and I'm sorry but 90% of the time it's scummy kids coming from scummy families. There are obviously exceptions where a child coming from a good home with parents who are actually positive, functioning members of society, just gets in with the wrong crowd or whatever but most of the time it's learned behaviour and their parents and wider family are just as bad.

I've lived on council estates, I'm not talking from some high horse £1mil mansion looking down on the poor folk. I am well aware that a lot of residents are just regular, lovely people just getting on with their lives but it's disingenuous to pretend there isn't also a problem with this sort of behaviour from both children and families in general living in those areas. I've lived next door to several, I've had police knocking at my door numerous occasions looking for the last specimen I was unfortunate enough to live next door to for a number of years. That's not to say it is always families on a council estate but let's be honest here, it often is and I've not had anywhere near the same amount of problems since moving off a council estate. I'm sure someone will come along shortly to tell me that's just anecdotal but I'm not buying it. I don't know what the answer is.

Shallow and unserious “solutions” to complex problems.
We are, in lots of cases, talking about the grip that serious organised crime has on an area.
Why do you think we had 60+ year old women arrested following the crash?

If the middle classes stopped funding the drugs that are being channelled through these areas we might get somewhere.

Well said. I would start with tough action against middle class drug users who seem to think their cocaine habit is an acceptable leisure activity.

@Sartre ”The trouble is, they have nothing to do. Burnham was right yesterday when he said if we’re closing digital space for them we need to reopen physical space.”

I didn’t see that, but he’s spot on there. I’ll look up the speech. Thank you.

Quite. I luckily never needed benefits, but DH and were working class ‘poor-ish’ and lived in social housing.

My two children were bought up not to be anti social - and they weren’t.

Feral uncaring parents rear feral kids - and they can be found in all social groups, and all types of housing.

But, I do agree that the parents need to be held accountable, in some way, if they don’t control their children.

So why do you just want to make the poor ones homeless then? Why do you think removing homes and food would work? And how do you plan to deal with those with some money?

InheritNowt · 02/09/2026 07:35

A non local Harrier group came to our area and set up a big long fox and hounds type run including false trails which encompassed my drive and garden. They were very arrogant, it wasn't pre arranged. They just turned up and took over!

I saw one bloke actually kick my dog. When I complained via email i got a miserable, pompous reply back.
I think all Harriers groups should be disbanded, sorry to hear other community stake holder groups find your activity disruptive.

Globules · 02/09/2026 07:36

There are so many entrenched issues here that are bigger than money.

The intergenerational trauma that gets passed from parents to children doesn't just stop when the child turns 18 and becomes an adult in the eyes of the law. The cycle begins again when they become parents.

A fear of lack of money isn't going to make someone into a better parent. What simplistic nonsense.

And you do know anti social teens can come from homes that aren't on benefits too, right, where their money can't be taken away? 🤦

deleted post, wrong thread 😶

Harrumphhhh · 02/09/2026 07:37

@dontthreatenmewithagoodtime Wrong post? 🤣 Though, more swings would probably be a really good start in both scenarios.

Bridgertonisbest · 02/09/2026 07:41

I’ve worked with some of these kids. Nobody cares about them, their parents don’t really give a shit, their teachers at school don’t care and society doesn’t care. The problem with taking money away from their parents is it just proves that nobody cares and drives them sooner into crime.

They’re actually very vulnerable

Edited

It would be a tad harsh to dock benefits and evict families for hogging the swings wouldn't it Grin

PonkyPonky · 02/09/2026 07:44

I’m not sure it would actually work in most cases. You could potentially give out a fine with an ASBO and then it’s not just benefits claimants being penalised. But I can’t see that actually working to improve the behaviour. The kids of people who are behaving like aren’t just going to stop because their mum has got a fine.
Someone up thread suggested parenting courses, I think this has more merit. We could really invest in this and make it available (mandatory) to everyone who has a baby. It could really be worth the investment for improving society.

Cobrakainerd · 02/09/2026 07:44

Worst kids we came across lived in private housing, not the social housing. They felt they were untouchable.

OhBotherSaidPoo · 02/09/2026 07:44

And what of the little shits with parents in privately owned housing.
Are they free to terrorise because their parents are earning enough.

INeverReallyLovedYouAnyway · 02/09/2026 07:45

How are they getting the money for e-bikes and scooters?? None of the decent parents I know would buy their kids these things, and yet the estates round here are full of them. Kids in hoods and masks and balaclavas.

MiceSpiders · 02/09/2026 07:46

Tawneylittle · 02/09/2026 06:39

So every kid that’s goes bad comes from a council house and parents on benefits!!!!!

I live in a council house and am on pip and esa due to disabilities that I won’t go into. My son is polite and well behaved.

so how do it punish the other parents or it it just kids from council houses?

most of the trouble at my lads school come from over privileged kids who think they have it made. So what do we do with them, or do they get a pass.

The ones not on benefits should have substantial fines and all whose children behave this way should be made to attend parenting courses

IkeaMeatballGravy · 02/09/2026 07:46

Did you see the extravagant funerals of the lads who caused the M9 crash? Those families were not short of cash. What do you do about the wayward kids of rich/financially self sufficient people?

What is a woman, who has escaped DV supposed to do when her teenaged son starts displaying the same character traits as his father? How is she supposed to stop a lad the size of a grown man from going out and causing problems in the community? What good does it do to pull the rug from under her feet when she is already vulnerable? What about the parents who have been begging for support for years?

Big fines and parenting courses, inconvenience their money and their time

I don’t believe you. For one it’s not just posh people. It’s anyone that enjoys riding a horse that’s actually enjoying being a horse.
They get permission to go on land. The entire point of the hunt is to be actively part of the countryside , not abuse it.
And yes they use bad language but in response to any violence and aggression.

Anyhow I used to teach kids in a Fresh Start unit at college.
These are not children who have chosen to be obnoxious. Usually theres trouble at Primary school - SEN needs, poor parenting choices, rough areas with little freedom to develop normal social skills.

What works is what works everywhere- throw money in, early doors.

Short term engage them. Humour helps. Tell them to join in - feds won’t catch them if they keep training.

Not the point of the thread but you are wrong about hunts. They very frequently trespass and cause property damage and if, for example, as a 12 year old girl you stand in front of a gate for land they do not have permission to access but they want to follow a fox across, the abuse and threats you receive would burn your ears.

I love horses, I grew up in the countryside, the vast majority of people who participate in hunting are callous, entitled bastards. Simple as that.

INeverReallyLovedYouAnyway · 02/09/2026 07:48

Took my daughter out on her bike last night and there were two boys riding around the roads on electric scooters. They must have been doing like 30-40mph on some stretches. No helmet or anything. They’re going to kill themselves. These parents need their heads looked at.

Lurkingandlearning · 02/09/2026 07:48

If their benefits and homes are taken away from them does that mean the whole family will live on the street or will the children be sent to children's homes? Or perhaps in order to keep the family together, but still homeless, the government should build workhouses. Taking that backward step will certainly make future social reform easier 👏

Hoardasurass · 02/09/2026 07:48

These kids are already being failed by everyone around them from parents to schools and even the government and you think that punishing the parents and other siblings by making them homeless and/or stripping them of any financial help will improve things?
White working class kids are put on the scrap heap from the moment they are born and failed by everyone. Then even when a few miraculously get the grades for college/university they are blocked by their inability to pay for their education and arent allowed to apply for scholarships because they're only for black or bame kids.
Honestly what do you expect from these boys, white working class kids get the worst grades, are lectued about their white privilege, watch the local white girls suffering at the hands of Pakistani Muslim rape gangs whilst the police and social workers protect the abusers and punish the girls. They grow up being told that they are both privileged and worthless at the same time, that they are to blame for everything from slavery to gaza. Yet have few if any chances in life and watch the bame kids who got worse grades than them get into uni with full scholarships (bame only) then are blocked from internships again because they are white and dei quotas are all that count.
The breakdown we are seeing in law and order amongst these white working class boys is a direct result of the promotion of false equity/equality policies based on the racist critical race theory that blames all the world's ills on white privilege.

If you want to see things improve ditch every single DEI policy, scholarships and internships and replace them with ones that only look at grades and socio-economic backgrounds rather than skin colour or ethnic background, so all poor kids have the same chance oh and stop telling them lies about how privileged they are when we can all see that they are actually the most marginalised.

tsmainsqueeze · 02/09/2026 07:48

What an absolutely ignorant Post.
You may end up eating your words if any children connected to you turn out to be antisocial.
