AIBU? Russia threaten UK

Am I being overdramatic about the new breaking news I’ve just seen about Russia threatening UK after use of drones. I’m super scared and have anxiety, can someone somewhat reassure me? Has these headlines happened before??

It’s all talk, but what can you do about it? 99% of the world jabe no control over it, try to distract yourself. It will be ok

Trallers · 17/08/2026 23:01

There is endless posturing and fighting talk that amounts to nothing. Honestly, if you find it stressful stay away from the news. Life is for living, not worrying about the political machinations of world leaders when you can do nothing about any of it. Your mental health will do so much better from just not reading it. I don't think we were built to be able to process everything horrible going on everywhere so stick to local goings on. If things reach a point where you need to know more then someone will tell you.

ticktickticktickBOOM · 17/08/2026 23:02

Well perhaps if we stopped arming the world we wouldn't be a target.

mumlearningtorun · 18/08/2026 07:43

I’ve woken up still thinking about it 🫠

They’ve been threatening us for a while. Mapping our cables, plonking submarines over them, warships down the channel, also cyber warfare. If it makes you feel better we won’t be alone, there have been border incursions over Scandi and the Baltics. I really wish successive uselesnesses in London hadn’t wrecked the armed services and made us dependent on the US so they could cream off all the money.

TrugFullofLove · 18/08/2026 08:19

OP, I grew up in the 60s and since then there have been multiple scares every single year - Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan, Falklands, Serbia-Croatia war, IRA.

To put this in perspective spend today reading about the history of threats to the UK. It genuinely will calm you down.

Your question 'has this happened before?' suggests you think this is the first time this has happened. It is always happening. There's always some asshole like Putin trying to disrupt the world but the sun still rises, people still go about their business, the asshole dies and along comes another.

frozendaisy · 18/08/2026 08:22

We are part of NATO @mumlearningtorun Putin knows this. Putin has taken 4 years to not even claim a strip of Ukraine, he isn’t going to attack NATO or the UK, Russian oligarchs own most of London!

LauraNorda · 18/08/2026 08:24

It's taken 4 years for them to advance 50 miles into Ukraine. I read somewhere that if a snail crossed into Ukraine the same time as Russia did, that snail would be 800 miles further in by now.

They will be massing in Calais sometime during the 27th century at this rate.

BMW58 · 18/08/2026 08:30

Good Lord they've been making "serious" threats for years!

I'm nearly 70 so have had s lifetime of hearing this shite from Russia - and having actually been there I can promise its totally bluster and bullshit.

Put it out of your mind, honestly.

Exactly. What do people expect Russia to do when they know it’s being attacked with British weapons. We interfere in every war and get fed the propaganda it’s for the greater good.

mtobrokeme · 18/08/2026 08:36

He threatens us every 15 minutes! I’d be more worried if he didn’t and there was radio silence! I mean the UK does have the option to stop selling weapons and machinery etc to Ukraine if they were all that worried!

Ginmonkeyagain · 18/08/2026 08:39

Russia can't even defeat a non nuclwar country on its own border. I wouldn't worry too much about their stupid posturing TBH.

Pedant61 · 18/08/2026 08:43

OP, Russia/Soviet Union has been threatening the UK for 80 years, ie most of our entire lifetimes. If we all worried about it, we'd get nothing done. Just get on with your life, and forget about it.

Friendlygingercat · 18/08/2026 08:45

This is because we got involved with bloody Ukraine, I don't remember any referendum on this asking for public authorisation. Millions have been spent on supporting them and they are not grateful enough. We have done enough for them and should leave them to it. You look after your own people first.

DirtyGertiefromno30 · 18/08/2026 08:46

This was in the Express yesterday, enough said . Don't give it a second of your time @mumlearningtorun

Seriously? You might want to reflect on the fact that the UK was not involved in anything to do with Ukraine or anywhere else that Putin has aggressive intentions towards when he sent men armed with deadly poison here. resulting in the death of a UK citizen.

Putin has played a very long game towards the West and too many stupid and/or self-serving western politicians have assisted him. He has long displayed aggressive intentions towards the West. The only language he understands is force. I expect this government to conduct a quiet but firm defence of British interests, and that includes firmly resisting his expansionist programme in Europe.

And yes, the Ukrainians have shown us how little substance there actually is behind his aggression. A little more focus on the situation and more meaningful support for the Ukraine and this war can end with Putin being seen to have been defeated - crucially. seen by his own people.

Arming Ukraine to help them fight off an invading country is the right thing to do.

They are a sovereign state invaded by a foreign power. Supporting them is the correct thing to do.

Russia will stop getting attacked when it pulls out of Ukraine. It could do that today. Nobody was interested in attacking Russia until it invaded Ukraine.

Thank you for posting the same thought I was having. In 69 and have forgotten all the threats this troublesome country made against the West in my lifetime.
OP don't worry. Don't let fear ruin your days. It's what the enemies of democracy want.

Lmao no it isn't. Russia were targeting the UK long before even their 2014 Ukrainian invasion.

And in arming Ukraine we are looking after our own people, because Russia target us and it would be so bad for our interests if they succeeded in Ukraine. Letting Russia do what they want only results in them further pushing the envelope, as we have sadly learned. Giving them what they want so they behave themselves is not one of your choices.

Lastly, we have a parliamentary democracy not a referendum based one. Maybe see if you can move to Switzerland.

You may or may not know this but you live in a parliamentary democracy where we elect representatives called MPs and they legislate on our behalf and decide whether they can support a government that exercises executive power. We do not live in a direct democracy where we vote on every policy.

Just seems like you haven’t grasped this.

PleaseDontTreadOnTheDaisies · 18/08/2026 09:36

Yes it's true Russia seems to make threats to us every 5 minutes, but that interview with Putin's advisor on R4 Today this morning was a bit anxiety-inducing.

He's claiming that NATO "probably" wouldn't protect us in the event of a Russian attack, ie. wouldn't invoke article 5. He thinks they would only invoke article 4. I have no idea how realistic this claim is.

I do think some sort of cyber attack is a very real possibility - and the chaos that could cause could be devastating. Interfering with our power supplies, for example.

NervousSheepy · 18/08/2026 09:40

More men willy waving at each other, it just makes me sad because the real people who suffer have mostly no say in any of it.
