AIBU? Russia threaten UK

Am I being overdramatic about the new breaking news I’ve just seen about Russia threatening UK after use of drones. I’m super scared and have anxiety, can someone somewhat reassure me? Has these headlines happened before??

Ah, I see the usual Putin apologists are out. At least if an actual shooting war breaks out we will be able to intern these fifth columnists (assuming they are in the UK rather than Moscow). I'm sure they all have posters of Lord Haw Haw in their living rooms.

Defence, as in ground based air defence, yes.

Bombing Russia directly - no. Asking for trouble.

Degrading their capability is an important tactic. You can't just sit back and let them hit you.

Anyone remember "Protect and Survive" booklet and TV/poster campaign etc?(1974-80) Now that truly was scary...
And the film "Threads". FGTW and "Two Tribes" ('84) and no end of (usually rather good) political pop music knocking around.

And Z for Zachariah!

Take your door off it’s hinges and shelter underneath it Hmm

Weird times…

Why do people keep citing the double agent spy poisoning as an attack on the UK? It was a very defined and specific espionage operation.

If you're going to be a double agent being murdered is par for the course.

Espionage has been happening all over the world for thousands of years. It is not a new threat.

They brought a nerve agent onto British soil and a British citizen was murdered. How else would you describe it?

Or maybe I don’t want to see more of our young men (and it is always young men) fighting and dying in wars that achieve nothing, only to strengthen the interests of the men in suits in Whitehall and the White House?

Have we learned nothing from the Middle East?

Whammyammy · 18/08/2026 13:40

Russia won't attack. They are struggling with Ukraine, imagine taking on nato. Putin isn't stupid.

You won't degrade Russia's capabilities. They are a huge country with drone components arriving continuously from China.

They could last forever.

He was a double agent - not just a random citizen.

If you are going to take on that role you expect to be killed off at some point.

Wars that achieve nothing? Have you read the reports of how Ukrainian citizens are being treated in the occupied areas? We're helping Ukraine stop this barbaric behaviour expanding throughout their country.

The only person to blame is Putin. If you want to point fingers at the cause of so many deaths, point them at that piece of shit

You're ignoring the woman that died. Does she not matter to you?

No posters in my living room just disbelief that people have no problem with how much money Ukraine has had thrown to them and they still can’t win. Add it all up from every country and it’s a colossal amount with no return but no one is questioning where their taxes are going when we keep writing blank cheques to Zelensky. It’s in his interest to keep the war going because he’s avoiding a general election as well, he makes out Russia doesn’t want peace but neither does he. I also think you’ll find most of us who are supposed Putin apologists don’t believe in war full stop so you won’t catch us on the frontline but I’m sure we won’t be needed because there’s enough people who think Russia are the enemy to take care of things.

She wasn't the target.

Every innocent person matters.

I have no doubt that the UK has probably done similar in other countries and plenty more countries have done it here but we are selectively told about it.

Backedoffhackedoff · 18/08/2026 13:52

They’ve been saying this for 4 years. They also send mouthpieces round to all the Ukraine allies to threaten the same. We just don’t see those, but they’re constantly threatening everyone

So what that she wasn't the target.

Russian security services directly caused the death of a British woman.

Russia invaded a sovereign state.

Russia is involved in cyber attacks and misinformation warfare across the western world.

Dawn Sturgess was not a double agent

Neither were Nick Bailey and Charlie Rowley

Quick, deflect from what Russia did. Look over there, not at Russian actions. Look elsewhere.

It’s widely accepted that these attacks on agents on British soil were the Russians testing / pushing the international community and the lack of support TM etc had helped give them the confidence to attack Ukraine

You have evidence of this?

You don't believe in war, do you think Ukraine should just surrender and let Russia invade?

You've either swallowed a ton of Russian propaganda or are just promoting it.

All the Russian talking points. Blank cheques, Ukraine can't win, Zelensky avoiding an election.

Try to read outside your usual sources, cos you're being lied to

Putin won't last for ever, but then again neither will the willingness of Ukrainians to die fighting him off, which is probably why he is happy for now to play the longer game. Although historically, invading somewhere and letting it go on for too long is what put paid to the USSR, so possibly not the best game plan ?

Notonthestairs · 18/08/2026 14:02

Have you deliberately had your fingers in your ears for the last few decades? Not bother to look at the Russia report?
They’ve been targeting the UK for years. Well before Putin invaded Ukraine.

Known interference in the Scottish referendum. Cyber interference. Targeting high profile ministers/companies. Proxy troll farms. Online disinformation campaigns. Bribing politicians.
Cutting communication cables. And launching deadly attacks in the UK.
Europe gets the same treatment.

The idea that we keep our head down and maybe they’ll leave us alone is a joke.

Balloonhearts · 18/08/2026 14:02

They're chatting absolute shit. Russia can't overcome tiny little Ukraine on their own bloody doorstep, do you really think they're going to take a pop at the UK?

Their only shot would be to try a nuclear weapon, at which point the rest of NATO would retaliate on our behalf and leave Russia a smoking hole in the map. They're not stupid.

It doesn’t achieve a single thing. Nothing will change, we will forever be in this cycle.
