Am I being overdramatic about the new breaking news I’ve just seen about Russia threatening UK after use of drones. I’m super scared and have anxiety, can someone somewhat reassure me? Has these headlines happened before??

Britain may be a so called parliamentary democracy. However in this day of universal smart phones there are better and more efficient ways of enacting laws than 650 people witting on their lazy asses in an old fashioned building. These significant matters should be decided by the British Born population as a whole and not by a few wankers who went to Oxbridge.

You know better than MI6. Amazing.

I’m not suggesting we shouldn’t be doing our bit against Putin. It just seems odd that the government and the country have gone out of their way to welcome the Ukrainian people and give them a life here, paying to educate their children, even though the general attitude towards immigrants is far less positive.

Maybe they are the right kind of refugees?

I am pleased to see there is still some tolerance towards refugees.

Notonthestairs · 18/08/2026 15:08

Must say the idea of making/voting on legislation via smart phones seems tailor made for Russias trolls farms and their known propensity to attack cybersecurity.

Lugol · 18/08/2026 15:08

The media love to keep people in a state of panic and terror. It sells papers.

I'm sure it was happening before the pandemic but since then it's been a non stop campaign with no let up and no good news.

I often think if it hadn't been for the news, newspapers etc would you have even known about the pandemic?

It's little wonder mental health is tanking left, right and centre.

I don't look at news headlines any more and I don't have social media other than here and youtube (do they count as social media?)

It doesn't mean I don't worry about what's going on but it means that the pendulums of bad news don't swing around me.

Absolutely batshit.

Yes, let's hand partial control of foreign and defence policy over to Jen with her HND in Beauty Therapy, because I'm sure she's in a far better position to know what's best for the UK's security in both the immediacy and the longer term, than people paid to take advice from the international Intelligence community, the MOD, foreign allies etc etc

Almost as ridiculous is the "I don't want more UK kids dying in wars" nonsense. Cool, go and tell the world's demagogues we simply aren't playing any more. In fact, no need, because if you take this moronic attitude that foreign aggressors simply aren't the UK's problem and therefore we should just not get involved, their lackeys will be knocking down your front door before long and you'll be able to complain about it in person. Except you wont, at least, not if you want to stay out of some camp, workhouse, or want to avoid just being shot out of hand. Sometimes it's necessary to defend yourself, and refusing to do so on "moral grounds" just results in both you, the kids you are desperate to protect, and everyone else getting bent over and fucked in any case. Well done idiot.

Conflict doesn't go away just because you object to it on "moral grounds", and nor will the people determined to come and kick your teeth in for you.

I guess without the news you would have been informed about Covid once people around you started dying?

MN and YouTube count as social media.

I honestly dont have much of an opinion on refugees one way or another. However I don’t think some refugees are more worthy than others.

What is the ‘right kind’? Is it because they are often women and children? Or because they are generally white?

I think, frankly, it's because they are European. They look like us, are culturally very similar to us, and often speak excellent English. And of course they are fleeing a conflict in our own backyard rather than on another continent. It's a case of 'looking after our own'.

Totally agree with all this!

Most of the population who don’t understand or wish to engage with politics at least can’t be arsed to turn out to vote.

But put it in the hands of the people directly and the mind boggles.

So we abandon Ukraine to its fate and Russia complete their invasion and annex it, triggering a huge refugee crisis as 30+ million Ukrainians seek refuge from their brutal oppressors.

Then the same happens in Estonia to 'liberate' the ethnic Russians there. Then Latvia. Then Moldova and Slovakia. And all the time waging cyber warfare, sabotage attacks, and disinformation on the West.

Will you still be saying 'nothing to do with us' then? Would you have said the same in 1938 when Germany annexed first Austria and then half of Czechoslovakia? How did that turn out? Did the dictator of the day just stop there?

Yep. The naivety is off the charts. If there was a version of this where we could just stay out of this and it would go away, that'd be worth considering. But there isn't.

I don't distinguish either but the Russia appeasers on this thread will not be welcoming Ukrainian refugees

I am sure it is. The fact that statistically women and children may cost the country more in school places, maternal and female healthcare, and paying the sponsor families seems to bypass people.

And the fact they can sometimes pop back to Ukraine for a visit and then come back to the UK does seem to
make a mockery of the whole refugee thing.

I was anxious in the early days but we've been threatened by Russia so many times and nothing significant has come of it.

EstoyRobandoSuCasa · 18/08/2026 15:50

This is what Russia does. It's hard to take any of it seriously.

But in the extremely unlikely event of Russia nuking the UK, I hope it will result in instant oblivion. And there is zero point in worrying about that, so I don't.

nomas · 18/08/2026 15:50

IonianNerveGrip · 18/08/2026 09:18

Lmao no it isn't. Russia were targeting the UK long before even their 2014 Ukrainian invasion.

And in arming Ukraine we are looking after our own people, because Russia target us and it would be so bad for our interests if they succeeded in Ukraine. Letting Russia do what they want only results in them further pushing the envelope, as we have sadly learned. Giving them what they want so they behave themselves is not one of your choices.

Lastly, we have a parliamentary democracy not a referendum based one. Maybe see if you can move to Switzerland.

How are Ukrainians 'our own people'? Confused

Well this makes a change from the usual moan about most of the "boat people" being male. Maybe it will all balance out in the end.

DenizenOfAisleOfShame · 18/08/2026 15:55

OP, don’t worry. Russia’s economy is on the verge of collapse. Putin will be lucky if he survives a year without a mass uprising.

EstoyRobandoSuCasa · 18/08/2026 15:58

Yes, the idea that Russia's struggling economy and severely deleted military is capable of taking on wars with multiple opponents simultaneously is optimistic, to say the least.

And Ultravox’s ‘Dancing with Tears in my Eyes’!

The dual threats of the four minute warning and ‘Don’t Die of Ignorance’ have contributed to GenX being somewhat nihilistic 🤣

😂

Only for the last 60 years or so.

Put it this way - when that government alert went off on Friday pretty much anyone over 50 would’ve immediately thought, “Oh shit, the Russians are finally coming”.

It doesn't bypass people. They have been overwhelmingly welcomed.

They don't 'pop back' on a whim. Sometimes people go back to visit their husbands who are in the military or elderly parents who cannot travel. It's not hard to understand.

They certainly won't be going for a beach holiday in Crimea.

So boat people are bad because they’re men of fighting age.

But Ukrainian refugees are bad because they’re women and children who cost the taxpayer more.

Maintaining links with home, showing a willingness to return home when the war is over, is bad.

Saving money and bringing your family here is also bad.

What are people meant to do?
