By which I mean, would most voters support this as opposed to a change in policy to refuse in greater numbers? I honestly can't tell what "the majority" actually wants. I would prefer fewer having seen how things went in Germany thanks to the Merkel wave but I am willing to believe I'm a backwards old boomer and a majority would be more welcoming.

They (UK governments) tend to say they have no choice due to the echr but this isn't true. There are a lot of operational choices they could make (eg sometimes when people are denied entry at the border they are actually allowed into the country for a few days and instructed to report back to the airport when it's time for the removal flight).

"They don’t like the culture"
"they do not want to integrate or learn the language"
"There is no incentive to go to work"

How many refugees and asylum seekers do you actually properly know? Because from your posts I'm guessing very few if any.

All of the asylum seekers I know are actively learning English - as is the case for any person learning any new language it's easier for some people than it is for others. The money is spent on interpretors for things like legal appointments and medical appointments. Which is what you'd expect since legal or medical terms are not easy or available quickly to learn and in those circumstances it's crucial people are fully understanding what's being discussed. That's completely different to day to day conversation. I can speak two other languages conversationally but I wouldn't have a clue about medical or legal terms. English is also one of the most complex languages you can learn.

For the many asylums seekers I know, all (bar none) have tried hard to integrate, understand local culture, many go to local churches and Christian holidays with their friends despite being Muslim. All have spent their time waiting on leave to remain volunteering or studying. All bar none have got a minimum wage job and work ridiculous hours as soon as they were allowed to work.

Most of the people abusing women on the journey are the traffickers who are staying in place along the journey. Many men are also raped and put into forced labour.

You know Afghan women would also want to bring their sons and husbands with them? Some may not but why would you expect them to come alone. They'd be vulnerable here in the UK alone as you well know. There's no win for Afghan women in only allowing the women. Women from Afghanistan are reliant on family reunification schemes to get out safely. Which is why its been predominantly making the journeys. This is why our process needs overhauled.

You would be wrong. I know many. Most have integrated. I live in a very diverse area. My bad using they, specifically the Muslim community don’t want to integrate.

@Lavender14no one can say how we can check, I don’t think it’s good enough to say oh well a horrendous screwdriver crime is part of what we put up with to have this system.

Politicians would like us to accept that collateral risk but no thanks. It shouldn’t be bad luck keep going with what we have.

We are told people choose to seek asylum here because of the English language. But if so many of them need lessons, that’s clearly not the reason.

If I was seeking asylum, personally I would want to go somewhere I knew the language or somewhere with a similar culture.

'Official and analysed data regarding sexual offense convictions in England and Wales show that foreign nationals accounted for roughly 15% of total sexual offense convictions between 2021 and 2023. When calculated per capita relative to population size, certain foreign national groups show higher statistical rates of conviction'

'Adjusting for population size, specific nationalities—such as Afghan and Eritrean nationals—showed significantly higher rates of convictions per 10,000 of their respective estimated population compared to UK-born citizens.'

This pattern is seen with data across Europe in many countries anywhere the data is made available to the public.

For example: 'Danmarks Statistik tracks age-adjusted crime indices where native-born Danish men serve as the baseline index of 1.0. Specific immigrant subgroups from certain non-Western regions (such as parts of the Middle East and Africa) display aggregate index multipliers ranging between 2.0 and 3.8 for overall penal code violations, which scale higher or lower depending on the specific category of offense (including violent and sexual crimes).

Non-Western immigrants and descendants account for an elevated share of sexual crime convictions relative to their total share of the Danish population.'

I am the granddaughter of immigrants/refugees to the UK from both Eastern Europe and the Middle East. Not exactly the right wing racist some people think those that show concern about this situation are.

Also any child that is put on a boat in France should be removed from the parents and put in care. No one can claim that staying in France is not safer than being put on an overcrowded boat.

But it was poor we had loads of bad actors coming in unchekced !

Neverstopwondering · 15/08/2026 17:03

Why on earth is anyone going on about Brexit when most of Europe are having the same issues????? Seriously political point scoring like that is a waste of time and a distraction from the real issues. Plus you should be more concerned that Keir went and nearly lost us one of the best resources for information about terrorist activity and terrorism friendly people entering the UK. All to be popular with far left fuckwits and the Islamic vote. That didn't work out for him anyway but is far more important than brexit with regard to the current undocumented migration situation.

suburburban · 15/08/2026 17:06

Lavender14 · 15/08/2026 16:01

Why? They aren't doing anything wrong by being here. They're exercising their right to seek asylum here.

Everyone has the right to decide where they live and how they live. Everyone, you included, has the right to seek asylum where needed and its only by the grace of God you haven't needed to exercise that right.

I’d quite like to live somewhere else but can’t just rock up. I need to be financially secure for a start and have health insurance etc

They don’t wish to integrate with other cultures from what I can see. My neighbours from Nigerian, Malawi, Indian, Philippine, Poland, Hungary are happy to attend street parties and allow all the children play together, chat with neighbours, get involved in community activities.

Yes it is an absolute disgrace, why aren’t the people living here put first for housing, jobs and healthcare

Kgfs · 15/08/2026 17:18

Lavender14 · 15/08/2026 15:39

It is not illegal to seek asylum. So anyone coming here on a small boat is not doing anything illegal unless they don't make a claim for asylum as soon as possible when they land.

Why do you think the majority of asylum seekers are men? Potentially due to the high levels of sex trafficking, sexual abuse and additional exploitation women and girls face per chance? If you had no choice but to get your family to safety how would you approach it? If you can only afford to send one or two and knowing that females might not make it?

People often become seperated along the way because of the nature of the journey so many asylum seekers agree an end destination to try and reunify as a family. Or where they know someone already there to help them build a life from scratch. Also other countries in Europe are much more hostile and I'm not sure you'd fancy living in a refugee camp would you?

"Someone who has arrived here legally and has valid residency has a right to be here, as long as they don't break the law"

So asylum seekers then... glad we cleared that up.

It's not illegal here. But we can change it.. India doesn't have any asylum law. And all illegal entry is an arrestable offense.

Sorry that made me giggle a little.

Not all people living in the UK have committed a crime and definitely not all foreign nationals. I think you are confusing the population figures with what we are looking at the crime figures, which are committed by a smaller percentage of people living in said country.

The statistics really should only be looked at per capita because that takes into account the country's own indigenous people will be a large percentage of the population. What the figures show is that foreign born males are more likely to be violent to women in particular. Some statistics from different countries show their adult male children born in host country also are more likely also. Unfortunately if you start to look at which countries you see a pattern (war is not always the common denominator rather similar ideological beliefs seem morethe issue).

A girl in dd’s yr 5 was fully covered - not just a headscarf but long dress, long sleeves, thick tights and… gloves. No PE or music etc. Certainly no play dates/fraternising with other girls allowed.

Another boat (well, RN) arrived today loaded with migrants. It’s not even being reported. Also you should see the Welsh Parliament - they have gone mad with prioritising newcomers for housing.

NotNowBernardNotEver · 15/08/2026 12:29

It doesn’t bave to be really complicated or extreme, and there are ways to solve the problem without starting a war with France or continually having large numbers of undocumented men arrive without agreement.

If UK laws are implemented to make refugee status temporary, bar family reunification unless stringent criteria are met and introduce ID cards linked to HMRC systems and clamp down with large fines on instances of people working without ID cards (and therefore tax) being registered, the incentive to arrive by small boat would be substantially reduced very quickly. All of this is within Government control: the first two could be done with immediate legislation, the latter could be implemented fairly quickly by a competent Government using an integrated government IT system like that used in Estonia - we could ask to licence it from them rather than recreating one ourselves. Sadly, Burnham has said he is cancelling the implementation of ID cards!

The above would provide substantial disincentives to pay large amounts of money and make a dangerous crossing to come to the UK rather than claim asylum in many other European countries.

It is also perfectly legal for us to set up processing centres for arrivals without prearrangement wherever in our territory that we choose. We have many uninhabited islands that could serve this purpose perfectly well, with modular buildings shipped over and regular supply of food etc, and make it clear all unplanned arrivals will be sent there until their claim can be processed/ deportation arranged if asylum is refused. The prospect of remaining on such an island for many years until their identity can be conclusively verified and background checked would discourage those arriving without documents (as most criminals trying to pass for asylum seekers will be) from coming here. This should address some of the public concerns around safety as well as vastly reduce the numbers of people who decide to come at all.

What I do not understand is why, rather than taking these obvious measures, UK Governments have continually pretended there is nothing they can do about it, and simultaneously we have far right extremists like Reform putting forward insane and laughable policies that are both physically impossible (war ships pulling up alongside dingies without overturning them, being able to tow dingies that are not designed to be able to be towed, containing people who don’t want to be towed so would just detach the rope!) and would constitute a declaration of war with France by having our military enter their waters without permission. 😆🤦🏼‍♀️

It’s madness that nobody will take obvious and workable steps to remove the incentives so that migrants no longer want to come without permission. Then we can be humane and accept a number that is manageable in an organised way, from countries of our choosing, with proper background checks and integration into our culture and economy by them working from day 1, having had their claims processed before arrival.

I would agree with all of that apart from the ID

I work with asylum seekers and this has not been my experience. Obviously asylum seekers are not a monolith but I've yet to meet someone unable to read or write in their first language.

Anyway AB is just the give that keeps on giving to reform & restore

Letting in all these men is just a silent war
that we are slowly waking up to

If it were down to me I would have them processed off shore

genuine refugees can come in once processed but they will never get access to social housing , benefits or a British passport - ever

and if they want to bring over there family that’s ok

they have to support them without using benefits or social housing

Everygoodnameisgone · 15/08/2026 17:57

They're not asylum seekers, they're invaders.
