To strongly dislike small dogs

Full disclosure: golden retriever owner of 30+ years… never had and never will have another breed.

I just don’t understand the fascination with little dogs. So many are horrible, yappy little things that get away with murder because they’re small. Only breed that I’ve ever been bitten by is a dachshund (x 2!!) and it always seems to be terrier or schnauzer types that launch at DDog. Generally they seem to attract people who haven’t got a clue re: dog ownership or can’t be bothered having a ‘proper’ dog - they don’t train properly and seem to just leave the tiny dog sitting at home all day barking at windows.. lacking mental + physical stimulation.

Well you obviously haven’t met my cutie pie, everyone loves him. He’s very well socialised and well behaved. Doesn’t bark at anyone. He’s been going to classes since he was 14 weeks old. Walks 3 miles in the morning and a shorter walk in the afternoon.

ive been attacked by an out of control Doberman who’s owner bizarrely was an ex RAF dog handler. Dh has been bitten by a Rhodesian ridgeback. My older dog got attacked by two labs. I’m not overly keen on big dogs to be honest! 😁

You’re not being unreasonable as you’re entitled to dislike any kind of dog you like. You are being unreasonable though in tarring all small dog owners with the same brush (I don’t have a dog). In my experience there are good and bad owners of all sizes of dogs.

There's an awful lot of generalisation in your post. Have you met every single small dog and small dog owner in the world?
Small dogs are proper dogs!

I find golden retrievers absolutely dull as ditchwater.

I like big dogs - mine is a labrador. However in the past I did have a jack russell/bull terrier who was a gorgeous little dog, and my son had a lovely dachshund, so not all little dogs are barky/bitey.

I have a little papillon.

He competes in obedience and is a very good boy!
He’s wary of small children and likes his space when he’s on lead. But if no one gets in his face and worries him, he’s good as gold!
Same as most humans, I imagine…….

He has perfect recall and is a delight. Travels well, can be alone as needed and does what is asked of him.

The dogs that bark the most where I live are the alsatian in the garden round the back of us and the border collie 2 doors down, which goes mad whenever someone walks past. In my old house I lived next door to a couple who had 2 huge dogs that they rarely walked, so they were crazy and even I (a dog lover) was scared of them.

I personally think that bad dog owners have all sorts of different sized dogs. It isn't just a small dog owner problem. Obviously breed and temperament matter too. We have a rescue cockapoo type dog now and she's far more bonkers than the sight hounds I used to have. Love her for her lively, friendly personality...but it is a shock to the system.

I was always a fan of bigger dogs- not huge, but robust. Tiny dogs worry me with their fragility.

However I can’t get on with labs and Goldies. They are so bland. I’m more familiar with terriers and that slightly ‘fuck you’ mindset.

LOL at the idea that people with larger dogs are all great dog owners whose dogs are all perfectly socialised and well trained. Certainly no correlation in my experience.

My mother's next door neighbour has had a succession of larger dogs; none have been trained and none have been walked. She's had an akita which she got rid of when it killed two of her cats, a rottweiler which occasionally escaped and had absolutely no idea how to behave around people, jumping up at small children and elderly people, and currently two Irish setters which bark and howl at everything from pigeons to a stiff breeze.

I also see a hell of a lot of large dogs in my neighbourhood whose 'exercise' consists of being walked around the block for ten minutes for a shit once a day. I also work in a city centre in an office next to luxury 'crash pad' studio flats, where one bloke keeps a husky on a balcony.

That was me! Until I turned 50, I considered small dogs not like 'real dogs' and their owners to be what can I say....flaky....

Until my OH said he had one growing up and wanted the same breed. My first reaction was absolutely no way, which he accepted to an extent...but it got me noticing that breed more...and started to interact with the owners, learning more about them, and I started to think maybe....until friends had a litter, we went, I fell in love at first sight with one of them and that was that.

I have made a complete turn around in my view of dogs and can't imagine having a big one again. Small dogs are so easy to take everywhere and travel with. People are not frightened of them, so you don't gave to be as careful...and picking their poo....gosh, it's bad enough to lick small ones let alone a big pile. Oh and more space on the sofa! I'm totally converted 😂

Not a dog owner but my dc loves dogs do he's always on the look out for dogs to pet (always asks owners first obviously). In my experience bigger dogs are friendlier because they tend to be less anxious. If I would ever get a dog it would probably be a golden retriever.

Similarly I’ve only ever had labradors until my current little fluff. There is for and against for any dog. I love them all.

I have a miniature dachshund and she is the sweetest most loving dog. You tarring all small dog owners with the same brush is lazy and ignorant - plenty of larger dogs have poor owners.
In my experience medium sized dogs' owners can allow their dogs to come bounding over to my dog to "play" - they have no consideration for her size and how gigantic everything in the world seems to her - this terrifies her.

It was in fact a rather large breed who lunged at her round a corner and the owner had no control. I had to put myself between her and this big dog to avoid her getting hurt.

I do love any dog with a personality, which is almost all of them really, but the more the better!

My dog is amazing. 99/100 people don’t even know she’s there. She doesn’t bark, growl etc. just does what I ask her to do which is usually stick by my heel or go to sleep under the table

Ah no Jack Russels are fab. Stone cold dickheads who just want a cuddle. I love them.

These are my two little dogs. They are both rescues. Both are totally non-yappy, they are both well trained, both walked off lead with great recall. Never bitten anyone or any dog. Although the fawn and white dog was mauled by a ridgeback, I was very lucky to get her away.

Previous to these two, I had ESS who were also well trained - unlike many ESS’s that I see now that are not. Dog behaviour, similar to child behaviour, is totally down to how they have been brought up.

I have two tiny dogs and I compete in agility with them most weekends, and train 3 times a week. I’m also a dog walker so they’re walking miles with me every day. They’re very well trained. Big dogs however…believe me as a dog walker I have seen it all, both with clients’ dogs and dogs we meet out walking. And the difference is when those fuckers are out of control they can inflict some serious damage to other dogs, livestock etc.
