To strongly dislike small dogs

Full disclosure: golden retriever owner of 30+ years… never had and never will have another breed.

I just don’t understand the fascination with little dogs. So many are horrible, yappy little things that get away with murder because they’re small. Only breed that I’ve ever been bitten by is a dachshund (x 2!!) and it always seems to be terrier or schnauzer types that launch at DDog. Generally they seem to attract people who haven’t got a clue re: dog ownership or can’t be bothered having a ‘proper’ dog - they don’t train properly and seem to just leave the tiny dog sitting at home all day barking at windows.. lacking mental + physical stimulation.

I'm just a fan of dogs that have lovely temperaments, regardless of their size, that crucially aren't an absolute menace to society - aggressive and/or out of control. I particularly despise the owners of these dogs.

Push me though and I guess my least favourite types to simply look at and mainly just out of sheer boredom of seeing them, are labradors and cockerpoos (maltipoos, any poo mix) and XL bullys (don't even class them as dogs, they shouldn't be allowed to be kept as pets, too lethal).

But give me a poodle, a proper one, any day of the week! No idea why people pay more for a crossbred poodle, bizarre!

YANBU to prefer bigger dogs but YABU to say smaller dogs are not ‘proper’ dogs, that’s a bit silly really.

I own a large dog currently (a big brute of a GSD) and have also owned 10kg spaniels so I do not discriminate based on size, however I can totally see why people prefer a more petite canine, my shepherd is forever getting in the way!

FWIW I do like golden retrievers as a general rule but my family’s golden can be very clingy and neurotic and I’ve met others who are similar…they all have their pros and cons.

Clearly (judging by this thread) Golden Retriever owners are ignorant and mean 😤

I’ve had different dogs over the years and had total recall with them all. They’ve all been trained to meet other dogs from three foot away with wagging tails. I’ve met many dog owners over the years with different dogs and have to say that the size or breed doesn’t come into it in any way it’s having an owner undertakes training until they have mastered recall and intros.

My golden is anything but dull. But I can see the appeal of small dogs, being able to carry them being the main.

And smelly.

OP I can’t say you are unreasonable as i don’t like big dogs regardless of breed so it’s basically the same thing.

Thank goodness there are both big and small dogs so we can both be happy with our respective preferences

i have a Weimaraner and look at people with small dogs with pure jealousy.
its all well and good owning a larger breed but generally they are more expensive and less portable.
Everything costs when you have to get things in large or extra large, their poops generally need to be lifted by a fork lift truck, can’t just pick him up for a cuddle, can’t really take him places that say ‘dogs are welcome’ because they usually mean little cute dogs, not my invariably dirty mutt fresh from the fields 😂

They are like your annoying drunken friend on a night out. Clumsy and irritating and just “in your space”

I tend to agree , and i work with dogs .
There are a few very lovely ones though as with any dog .
I don't really care what size a dog is but i particularly love a little dog with a huge character.

I’m not a fan either. I’m a house/dog sitter and I tend to swipe past any small dogs 😬 they just don’t appeal to me. I quite like border terriers tho, they seem to have more of a hardy feel!

What! You are most certainly being unreasonable.

Nothing worse than a yapping little dog, there are 2 that bark all the way on their walks. Sets both my labs off barking and trying to look out the window. Mind you if my 2 saw them when they were walked they would ignore them.

I used to have a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and he was perfect. On NYD 2000 he was attacked, ie picked up and shaken by a Weimaraner and very very nearly killed, and then a Boxer had to be held back from doing the same a few years later. I know someone who had a Malmute and had to have it put down at about 2 years old as it attacked her and her family.

I realise those are exceptions, but certain big dog breeds I am inclined not to trust due to above experiences. Never met a small dog breed I wouldn’t trust.

Oh no 😢 our little one was also attacked by a big German Shepherd who grabbed him by the neck with no provocation whatsoever (we were literally just passing by and both dogs were on a lead). It was a miracle I managed to get him away with only minor injuries

Not only are you being unreasonable but you sound rude and rather stupid too. I have always had dogs and they were big dogs. Now I’m older , not ancient but older , I’ve fallen into having smaller dogs , they suit my lifestyle but that doesn’t mean I don’t know about dogs! You sound so superior it’s embarrassing.

Yanbu to have opinions or preferences about dog breeds, but rest is really just broad generalisation and a great deal of assumption based on anecdotal observations, supported by stereotypes.

Don't like small dogs, then as you say stick with the breed you prefer. Lots feel differently and either preference is fine. I've always had positive experiences with small dogs, the few negative experiences I've had (an attack on my own dog, twice, being bitten myself once) all relate to large breeds, but it's not proof of anything in particular and I'd still happily own a larger dog of either breed involved should the desire arise.

Dog disposition and owner capability vary across the spectrum.

I don’t dislike any dogs, but I was definitely in the ‘look at these poorly trained dogs and lazy owners’ camp when I had a Labrador, I thought I was a brilliant dog owner….. but it turns out I just had a Labrador, like golden retrievers they are extremely biddable and easy to train. I went on to get a working cocker next. I’ve never been so wrong about anything in my life 😵‍💫🤣🤣🤣.

I can't understand people who own tiny breeds like golden retrievers....my dog weighs over 60kgs.

My cairn terrier was the best dog ever. Full of character, not yappy, entertained us every day and cured my young DD of her fear of dogs. Plus she fitted in the car easily and I could pick her up if needed. They are a fabulous breed! Here she is supervising gardening. Lost her 2 years ago at nearly 16 and miss her every day.
