Full disclosure: golden retriever owner of 30+ years… never had and never will have another breed.

I just don’t understand the fascination with little dogs. So many are horrible, yappy little things that get away with murder because they’re small. Only breed that I’ve ever been bitten by is a dachshund (x 2!!) and it always seems to be terrier or schnauzer types that launch at DDog. Generally they seem to attract people who haven’t got a clue re: dog ownership or can’t be bothered having a ‘proper’ dog - they don’t train properly and seem to just leave the tiny dog sitting at home all day barking at windows.. lacking mental + physical stimulation.

You're right, big breeds like St Bernard's are absolutely vicious and will rip children to shreds.

My golden retriever much prefers small dogs. He’s scared of the big ones. Little dogs can bark and lunge at him all they want and he just thinks they’re adorable and playing a fun game. Based on that alone I would much rather come across a small dog on a walk.

I have a miniature dachshund and she’s absolutely adorable. She’s my little soul mate and follows me around everywhere.

There was no provocation from ours, he was only 11 months old and didn’t go up to this other dog, it was a family walk and I about 11. We all just walked past this couple and these massive Weimaraners and this one dog just went for ours, picked him up and shook him violently. My relative hit it with her walking stick and got threatened! “Don’t you fucking dare hit my dog” “well look at what yours is doing to ours!”

Ours was dropped, and the man stormed off. His wife hung back, apologised and said don’t mix her up in it but gave us his details and said please report to the dog warden, which my parents did.

Off we went to the emergency vets (🤑) and after the operation they told us if the rip had gone 1mm further he would have died.

It took months and months for him to physically recover.

With the boxer, it just pushed past us walking on a narrow path in a line and if my dad hadn’t have grabbed hold and nearly straddled it, it would have had ours, it was like a homing missile. Owner was way behind and didn’t really care. No harm done but it was close.

Our gorgeous doggy lived until 14.5, he had a good life after a shakey start 😊 Non of us had any patience though after that for owners of boisterous dogs who say “they’re only playing” and make no effort to put them on a lead or just stand far away shouting at them to stop it.

I strongly dislike big dogs so each to their own.

I have a black lab, a boxer and a black miniature schnauzer. The lab is gormless as they come like Neil from The Young Ones, the boxer gets the tit on as soon as you dare look at the other two and yet the schnauzer is the most inquisitive, clever, funny, bossy and simply beautiful creation god (if there is one) has ever made. Incidentally, the only only animal that’s caused me harm is a cat.

was TOTALLY wrong. And I’m glad this idiocy didn’t persist into my 40’s as I’d never have got the rescue pugs when I moved to London.

What was such a surprise to me was that small dogs have exactly the same needs and surfeit of personality that big dogs have. I also thought they’d be a bit thick as one of mine has a head the size of a tennis ball.

Nope, she’s the smartest. Easily outwits all other dogs she meets. She can open doors, operate toys quicker to get treats, much quicker than my supposedly smarter Labrador could.

Small yappy dogs are really annoying. Why do they feel the need to bark so much?

My girl is 6kg of perfection and small enough for regular cuddles on the sofa.

I inherited a 100% arsehole terrier mutt. He was a bit reactive but I got some help from a professional trainer and did the training with him. He's not perfect but he's much better than he was and I'm very careful in how I manage dog introductions. He only barks when someone comes to the door (which isn't every 5 minutes)or gives a single bark when he sees a squirrel doing parkour on the garden fence, other than that he doesn't make a sound.

Labs and retrievers are lovely but a bit boring. I'll take my miniature, four legged arsehole any day of the week.

I dont dislike small or big dogs, I have big, but I dislike badly bred, designer style dogs, bred with health issues, not robust, any accidents are likely to induce long term problems. Anyone going out buying a dog that has known genetic problems are idiots.

Pugs aren’t yappy. They’re cuddly as hell. This one is my toddlers best friend.

I have a little terrier who is very much a proper dog, not at all yappy or bitey and he catches mice.

My little shit is a very efficient ratter and I'd rather he wasn't. 😂

I’m not a fan of badly socialised, badly trained dogs, whether they’re small or large breeds. The people over the back from me have some kind of husky crosses which wake me up barking most mornings. The Boston terrier next door never makes a peep though.

I’ve been bitten, over the past 40 years, by a Newfoundland, 3 Labradors, a Staffordshire Bull Terrier, a Border Collie and a Jack Russell (he was mine!).

I’ve always preferred bigger dogs, but I’m a bit unsteady on my feet now and prefer something that can’t pull me over if it spots a squirrel, so I currently have a MN hated dog - a Springer x Poodle - who is the easiest, best dog I’ve ever had. His recall is 100%, he has no separation anxiety, is impeccably trained and has very good manners. Plus he doesn’t shed, which is a huge bonus! I’ve put the time in with him though to make him a nice dog to be around.

I love golden retrievers but wouldn’t be able to walk one enough, so I did lots of research (some on Mumsnet) and decided a toy poodle was the best breed for me.

I got my wee boy in January and he’s the best thing that ever happened to me 😍

He’s so clever and affectionate and excellent company. He’s not yappy at all and only barks when someone is at the door.

He is very friendly and loves all other dogs and people- he gets very disappointed if anyone walks past without stopping to tell him he’s the cutest dog they’ve ever seen 😆

Little Terriers are wonderful dogs! I’ve had larger dogs too, including a lab, a boxer and a springer, all with their own personalities and traits! But he is definitely the cutest!
