To strongly dislike small dogs

Full disclosure: golden retriever owner of 30+ years… never had and never will have another breed.

I just don’t understand the fascination with little dogs. So many are horrible, yappy little things that get away with murder because they’re small. Only breed that I’ve ever been bitten by is a dachshund (x 2!!) and it always seems to be terrier or schnauzer types that launch at DDog. Generally they seem to attract people who haven’t got a clue re: dog ownership or can’t be bothered having a ‘proper’ dog - they don’t train properly and seem to just leave the tiny dog sitting at home all day barking at windows.. lacking mental + physical stimulation.

My dog loves dogs of all shapes and sizes. She's a soft as putty labrador who's content to let small dogs walk over her head as she lies down. Her bestie is a newfoundland poodle mix who is adorable the only dog she despises is our neighbours nasty terrier type dog who snaps at everything and barks constantly. They say dogs are like their owners and if you met it's owner you'd realise never a truer phrase

While I prefer bigger dogs (like their bark and the fact they can protect us), and some of your points might be right, in that it's easier to let a Yorkie get away with things than a Dobermann, it's the human's fault if they don't train or look after them. Plus for people with certain disabilities maybe it's easier to have small ones?
And not many airlines allow large dogs to sit with you in the plane. Wish they did, would much rather have a dog than drunk/screaming/seat kicking humans.

My small dog is scared of Golden Retrievers, because so many have hurt her by ploughing over her, bruising and battering her and being completely oblivious to her existence, and oblivious to the calls of their owners.
Goldens are the breed I least like, as they're the least likely to actually be well trained.

Agree retrievers can be very intense for other dogs but rarely are they genuinely aggressive. On the training part - mines working line who works picking up game on shoots all winter, so not all of them are badly trained 😉

Great job, you showed her! Choosing from the pool of 10 ish large dog breeds that aren't either hunting dogs or guarding dogs genetically, it really proves your point!

OP I get the impression you feel special for having a working breed despite treating it like a groomed manicured poodle, and it's part of your identity so the mundane reality of life doesn't hit you as hard while it pulls you around on artificial trails. That's great for you but when it dies nobody will judge you if you choose a dog bred to be your companion. It's really nice, you don't have to spend valuable time in your day after work/children/chores faking a job for it to do so it doesn't develop neurosis.

If I simply wanted a companion I wouldn’t get a dog… that’s what friends (& cats) are for. Part of the reason that I don’t really understand small dog ownership! I like having something I can take on big adventures to the beach, forest etc and drag me out of the house in all weathers. FWIW DDog is part working line and part show line - she’s also perfectly happy when left as a sofa ornament! The duality is great.

As for your delightful when ‘it’ dies comment.. DDog is the fourth golden retriever I’ve owned. When she passes we’ll repeat the cycle and get another GR pup. Easily trained, cuddly, active but not impossibly so.. I could go on. Great dogs.

YANBU, I don't like small dogs either. My least favourite are Dachshunds. They always seem to be yapping.

I agree. It’s always small dogs having a go at my sweet, placid, quiet lab. They walk past snarling, growling and gnashing their teeth at her! And she barely makes eye contact, might give them a tail wag. They’re SO grumpy!

Not at all - I dislike all dogs. I was bitten in the face by a poodle as a toddler.

What makes you think that small dogs don't go on adventures? They are just 'dogs' not ornaments. My small rescue cross would ideally like to spend every day running in woods, walking in countryside or on the beach. She needs a decent walk every day. She's no different to bigger dogs I've owned (although the pray drive she has I could do without!).

My terrier goes on adventures to the beach, to the forest, etc. I’m a keen hiker and he is up for a day in the hills. He will absolutely drag me outside whatever the weather. If it gets to 7:30 and I’m still on the sofa he comes and barks at me to tell me it’s time we went out!

What are you going to do with your big dog when he’s elderly and can’t walk far? Because mine I can put in a rucksack and still keep going on adventures with him.

in fact that was the reason for going smaller with this dog. My older dog who can’t walk very far is 13kg and she’s just a bit too heavy to get in a rucksack and go hiking.

I seem to meet a disproportionate amount of truly angry and vindictive miniature dachshunds, but honestly, wouldn't you be bitter too if you had been bred to have a very low tum, instead of the freedom to joyfully massacre badgers like their more substantial forebears?

How can you hate me? I’m the best little cuddler in the world!
