AIBU to feel awkward about my cleaner's very revealing work outfit?

My cleaner wears what i'd describe as an extremely skimpy gym outfit. I'm not sure of the exact name of clothes like this but hopefully you can imagine what I mean. It leaves basically nothing to the imagination - basically painted on fabric, and not much of it.

I get it (especially in these temperatures) - sweaty manual work, wear what your comfortable in, it's current fashion for people in their early 20s, want to show off body, whatever.

But I can't help but feel its a little inappropriate and awkward, especially when husband and other males are around in the house.
I don't want to make it a thing but AIBU? Would you say anything?

Are you thinking your husband is ogling her and feeling a bit jealous and insecure, If either of these are true then the issue is you both. Not her.

no of course there is not some appropriate level of clothes for a cleaner, as long as she’s dressed.

my hairdresser wears a sports bra and short leggings, looks great, she’s not trying to entice my husband and if I thought for one moment he was looking at her inappropriately I’d be speaking to him, not asking her to cover up,

But the discomfort is due to her own issues not the cleaner is doing anything wrong.

and she’s going to look like a right jealous insecure woman if she pulls her cleaner aside and says do you think you can cover up. If the cleaner has other options, then hopefully she tells her to fuck off.

I didn't say the cleaner was attractive, simply that if that's the case, and she happens to draw a glance from OP's DH, that's a natural reaction, and not a sexual perversion.

Honestly, OP, it sounds like this is more about your own insecurities than the other person. If you’re unhappy with yourself or the way you look, it’s easy to project those feelings onto others. Your cleaner could be wearing overalls and you’d probably still feel threatened.
Projecting your own self-doubt onto someone else isn’t fair. It might be more helpful to focus on addressing those feelings within yourself, rather than becoming fixated on things that are, frankly, none of your business.

A lot of these comments are still making assumptions about what kind of "gym wear" the cleaner has on; the only clue from the OP is that it's very close fitting. Until the OP comes back with a closer definition about what is being worn then I don't think anyone can really comment much - we've had everything suggested from scrunch bum leggings to teeny weeny shorts & tops.

I can understand wanting to do cleaning in close fitting clothing - loose clothing can swish around & get in the way, catch in things, loose t-shorts can dip into water & cleaning products. The fabric helps too, most decent gym wear is made to not absorb things like sweat so is likely to be easier to wash & not stain.

Gymwear are clothes that are suitable for exercising, and cleaning is enough of a physical job to qualify.

I don't see people wearing a bikini at the gym, at school or in the supermarket? It's social not considered "clothing", so why do you think it would be acceptable?

I can understand, I'd feel exactly the same. I do my own cleaning and I certainly couldn't wear tight fitting clothes/ gym gear in that heat, old loose cotton shorts and vest top would probably be more comfortable and cooler.

Sounds more like your insecurities that's problem not the cleaners clothes.

Depends on how skimpy,skimpy is, everything relative.
Of course she should be comfortable and cleaning is hard work especially in the heat.
But yeah IF her boob's are at risk of falling out then I would think thats not really suitable workwear, but ultimately i wouldn't say anything or care. my husband usually hides when the cleaner comes as shes chatty and he isnt! It's polite to get out if their way anyway so they can get on with the job, unless you have teenage sons I dont think its an issue, teen boys are likely to either gawp or hide. If they stared id be having words with them.not her, your DH, a grown man should be able to behave appropriately.

I suppose it depends on the level of decency, there are some things that I wouldn't want to see in my own house especially if there are children around. I think there is a bit of a double standard around modesty depending on the age and gender of the person - I used to have a male cleaner and certainly wouldn't have wanted his parts on show whilst working!

I used to have to go into people's homes for my job, many of them older people and I wouldn't have gone in skimpy or revealing clothing out of respect and to avoid making people unnecessarily uncomfortable.

It sounds as if the cleaners outfit was very clinging and revealing, outlining body parts, so I don’t think it’s appropriate to go round her clients houses like that, though no doubt some clients would enjoy the view.

It’s hard to say without seeing what she’s wearing. If we’re talking hot pants and a bra top, then yeah, I’d think it was pretty inappropriate to wear to random people’s houses to do a professional job.

I wouldn’t particularly care in my house, but I can see how a lot of people wouldn’t like that. Of course you might get others who like it too much (i.e. single men who are willing to pay for ‘extra services’).

As I mentioned in another post, I was a domestic cleaner, and loose fitting clothing is a health and safety hazard, it can easily get caught on furniture and fixtures and fittings. Imagine carrying a hoover up and down stairs, and a loose item of clothing gets caught on the banister, you wont be able to catch your balance in time if you're carrying equipment. So all the comments about loose fitting clothes are really not taking this into account.

It's boiling cleaning houses in this heat. I ended up drenched in sweat - which itself is horrible when there are annoying people floating around the house when I want to be left alone the clean the place. For gods sake people, go out for 2 hours and leave your cleaner in peace.

What is inappropriate that you think your husband and other males in the house are ogling the cleaner! Is your cleaner safe working in your home with these males around??

By loose clothing I and others don’t mean floaty tents and voluminous harem pants! Tee shirt , cotton trousers are not going to get caught in furniture. Tight fitting gym wear is likely to be of man made material and sweaty. It’s not appropriate

Oh, youd be surprised. I'll say it again, I was employed as a domestic cleaner myself, so I know what I'm talking about.
And what happens when the T shirt gets wet while you're cleaning the shower? It takes longer to dry, and t shirts have a tendency to go see through when they get wet, then OP will complain about that. As others have said, gym wear absorbs moisture better and dries more quickly, so maybe the cleaner finds it more practical.

I’m sure neither your husband or the other males would be concerned with the clothing of any woman as that would be highly inappropriate.
