AIBU to feel awkward about my cleaner's very revealing work outfit?

My cleaner wears what i'd describe as an extremely skimpy gym outfit. I'm not sure of the exact name of clothes like this but hopefully you can imagine what I mean. It leaves basically nothing to the imagination - basically painted on fabric, and not much of it.

I get it (especially in these temperatures) - sweaty manual work, wear what your comfortable in, it's current fashion for people in their early 20s, want to show off body, whatever.

But I can't help but feel its a little inappropriate and awkward, especially when husband and other males are around in the house.
I don't want to make it a thing but AIBU? Would you say anything?

By loose clothing I and others don’t mean floaty tents and voluminous harem pants! Tee shirt , cotton trousers are not going to get caught in furniture. Tight fitting gym wear is likely to be of man made material and sweaty. It’s not appropriate

if you think about it, if it was more comfortable to run or be at the gym to wear old loose cotton shorts and vest top, we would wear them?

Gymwear are not just a fashion statement, they ARE more suitable and more confortable.

That's why I wouldn't resent a cleaner to wear what she would be wearing at the gym when she's cleaning my house.

Packofsix · 26/07/2026 15:32

Are you that insecure?

Best answer!

Why’s it the best answer, the op has not said this woman’s bits are on show. It’s hyperbolic nonsense. She’s prob wearing leggings, or legging shorts and a vest or something, perfectly decent attire and great for cleaning in, but yes will show a figure off, something you see walking down any high st or in any gym.

I’d say insecure and jealous yes,

Eww, why are you married to someone who is clearly a pervert and has little self control? To the point you are so uncomfortable and worried for a young woman in your own home.. this is really scary..

ByUniqueViper · 26/07/2026 16:06

Jeez do you live in the dark ages. Its boiling and she will be even hotter cleaning. If its a problem for the males in the house then maybe you need to speak to the males and remind them not to do anything inappropriate.
Or is the person with the problem you ? Maybe you need to keep the males of the house indoors at all times incase they see a lady in a scrimpy outfit in the gym, at the park, at the swimming pool, on holiday, on the beach.
Give your head a shake she isnt naked and she's simply trying to stay cool!

Jollyhockeystickss · 26/07/2026 16:12

Do you not go to the beach semi naked people everywhere getting changed, topless women, men and women in just g strings, its been so hot if my cleaner if i had one turned up in shorts and a gym bra top i wouldnt bat an eyelid,.

Is it affecting the standards of her cleaning? Then, no..........you don't get to police someone else's clothing choice because it makes you uncomfortable. This is entirely a you problem.

Would women wear things like this if they were very overweight?

You went from “amazing body” to “very overweight”….theres lots in between those descriptions who wear that type of clothing!!!

You really are such a prude though, simply outfits are for beach only….scrunch bottom anything has you clutching your pearls…..and only those with amazing bodies wear skimpy outfits for attention 😂
Just say you’re a diddly Dora who dresses far too old for your years and leave it at that!!
You sound like a woman who blames SA victims for wearing revealing outfits and claiming they were asking for it!!!

Velvetandleather · 26/07/2026 16:58

Allseeingallknowing · 26/07/2026 14:08

It sounds as if the cleaners outfit was very clinging and revealing, outlining body parts, so I don’t think it’s appropriate to go round her clients houses like that, though no doubt some clients would enjoy the view.

What like legs? 😂

Where did OP mention her husband is a pervert with little self control?

Why are you and the other males hanging around watching her work? We all make ourselves scarce when the cleaner is in so we're not in her way, half the time I have no idea what she's wearing.

Exactly this. Who are these “other males” in your house? Why are they getting in your cleaner’s way? My DH hides in his home office when our cleaner’s here.

More like camel toe!

Whatthefork1 · 26/07/2026 17:22

Of course YABU. She can wear what she wants. You and your husband are the ones being unreasonable. Him for clearly being a pervert and you for judging a fellow woman and not calling your husband out.

I think the issue is clearly your husband. Save yourself the heartache and get a fat elderly woman to do your housework 😂🤦‍♀️

SparklyLeader · 26/07/2026 18:33

It bothers you enough to post here, so it is unlikely the discomfort you feel will magically disappear. This is your home. You have every right to feel comfortable in your home. Her outfit makes you feel uncomfortable.

Start interviewing other cleaners and give her notice. It's sad, I agree, but it's your home. If you don't make yourself comfortable in your own home then where? it will not get better for you as you age. In your home, put yourself first. You have no obligation to keep her employed. Talking to her about her outfit will not go well for you. Plead finances. Give her a good recommendation and a final date. Start interviewing others.

This is where you live. Respect yourself in your own space. You don't have to be anxious just to get your house cleaned.

I don’t think many would be happy with the situation described by OP. It’s not necessary to show your physique to all when doing housework.

Flamingojune · 26/07/2026 19:12

Never seen a middle aged cleaner in scrunch bum shorts and crop top

AgileMentor · 26/07/2026 20:39

So it’s her problem - a woman who is merely there to do her job, that your husband can’t control himself around women in I’m assuming shorts and a crop top?

Phoenixfire1988 · 26/07/2026 21:23

If your husband or " other males" in the house feel the need to ogle the cleaner thats their / your problem and you should be shutting it down its hot as hell she has a right to work without being ogled also your insecurities are also not her problem !

“Evolutionary biology and neuroscience indicate that men are biologically predisposed to notice women's bodies automatically, even in completely ordinary, non-sexual settings. Eye-tracking and brain-imaging research shows that this initial visual focus happens within milliseconds and operates largely as an unconscious, reflexive response rather than a deliberate choice”

justticketyboo · 27/07/2026 08:00

If you’re worried about her being around your husband in gym wear then the issue is with you and your husband not your cleaner OP!

So what, though? Men at the gym are presumably ‘evolved’ enough not to hurl themselves at women in close-fitting gym gear shouting ‘Let me impregnate you immediately!’ so I’m sure the ‘males’ in the OP’s household can manage to override their biology, with effort.
