I don't understand how this could happen.

I don't accept drinks off anyone I don't know.

In a restaurant I watch when the wine is bought to the table and how it is opened.

If I go to a bar, I watch what the bartender/barmaid does before and when they pour my drink.

Unless you leave your drink lying around there is no reason for it to be 'spiked'.

Dons tin hat !

Oh look, the police have chimed in with tgeur perspective on the matter.

So what is your answer to stopping this?

MabelAnderson · Today 19:10

SilenceInside · Today 15:24

@sunshinesuzeyyoung women are allowed to make mistakes and what may be done to them by opportunistic criminals is not their fault. They may have been deliberately distracted in order to access their drinks. Again, no one can always keep a perfect watch out for this sort of thing. I don’t think you need a hard hat but maybe bear in mind that the OPs DD and her friend are seriously unwell and you are saying that it’s their own fault. It isn’t.

Plus injection spiking is common now and nobody can watch out for that.

GnomeDePlume · Today 19:11

It is poisoning.

The problem with it being called spiking is that the language trivialises what is a very dangerous offence.

The education needs to be not just on how people can protect themselves but also to educate potential perpetrators that their actions have the potential to kill or seriously injure.

Are there opportunities to charge someone caught in posession of the drugs or means of administration with a 'posession with intent to administer' type offence?

The people who do this 'for a laugh' need to feel real world consequences.

@Pissedoffmama it is really hard to prove but the hospital will be providing the results to the police and they should take a statement from both your daughter and friend when able.
They will also be checking pub/club cctv if any available.
This type of crime does incur a prison sentence, if people are caught but it is often under reported, particularly if a sexual assault occurs
I hope your daughter is much better soon

I posted earlier about my son’s experience - the police have to do their own independent testing and they can’t get to the hospital in time. We had a name, phone number and address as the guy was trying to get my son back to his place. Still not enough for the hospital to contact the police. And in my son’s and my cases, only a bag of saline given then discharged. At least OP’s daughter is being kept in and having follow-up tests!

Their job!

Tbf you said your own sons wanted to “beat the hell out of everyone” - how would this help?

JustMyView13 · Today 19:16

sunshinesuzey · Today 19:07

Which is?

To keep the public safe, by investigating crimes, arresting criminals and collecting sufficient evidence that it leads to a prosecution, which in turn acts as a deterrent to others?

Ponoka7 · Today 19:16

sunshinesuzey · Today 19:07

Which is?

To investigate an alleged crime. Make it inconvenient for the business, so staff are on alert. Do random searches of bar staff etc. It's a serious crime, akin to assault. If carrying out this crime was going to completely fuck up the perpetrator's future, it would help to prevent it.
A male colleague of my DD's was spiked, caused a flare up of his heart condition and left further damage. The perpetrator remained untouched because the police didn't want to know. An arrest would have meant a suspension from work, shame among their family/friends, being left out of everything in work, if not sacked. There should be consequences.

Sorry to hear that, I can only speak from experience in the area I work where it is taken pretty seriously, but the police kits are available here as spiking is pretty rife and we are seeing much more ghb overdoses.

Marmalademorning · Today 19:16

I’ve heard this happens a lot this day and age. It just goes to show how depraved the human race has become. They really need to talk about this in schools and make future would be perpetrators know how serious it is.

Pissedoffmama · Today 19:17

@Emmasblackboard
the rest of my sentence said that they wouldn’t, and that they were heartbroken.

What can the police do, though? I think you can get test strips to detect additives like ketamine and GHB.

Exactly.
Everyone is moaning about how useless the Police are but can't come up with any suggestions to stop it.

Here are the test strips https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/396644541356?var=0&mkevt=1&mkcid=1&mkrid=710-53481-19255-0&campid=5338590836&toolid=10044&loc_physical_ms=41471&customid=42ca3f9fd9fa17ead11f55fd835f0ce6&gclid=42ca3f9fd9fa17ead11f55fd835f0ce6

Well that’s something, even if it seems they’re available because there are more cases. Hopefully in Surrey now too since my son’s was a while ago. Sad times 😔

chocoluv · Today 19:19

Many men who do this, do it because of the power/fun of being able to sneak it in the drinks and then obviously having a young woman to do what they want with.

It’s not necessarily driven by a man who cannot get sex. So it can be men who are good looking, charming etc and not ones you think need to be as wary of.

Someone said up thread about how any woman allows this to happen - but that’s the game of it.
A drink left on a side unattended all night may be spiked but actually for some of these predators that is too boring.
It’s the fun/chase of it and these men are experts at doing this. Before they ever go on to SA someone, they would have already practised this multiple times and they enjoy the challenge of women who are being sensible.

It is never the victims fault.

bumblebee3122 · Today 19:20

Look up StoppTops. You can buy them to use yourself or they sometimes offer them on bars and clubs. It's a top for your drink to protect it from being spiked.

I really hope your DD is on the mend soon and not too traumatized by this

Pissedoffmama · Today 19:23

sunshinesuzey · Today 19:18

I get that……
But with all due respect, this should not be happening.
Everyone should be safe.
What sort of world do we live in if we’re not safe to have a drink with a friend

Still needs much more to be done. It is also one of the most under reported crimes against males

I agree but how can it be stopped?

Everyone says that the Police should do something, but what?

Someone said CCTV in Bars but who will pay for that.?

goodenoughmum88 · Today 19:27

I’m so sorry for your DD. When she is feeling up to it, can she or her friend ensure that they share the bar with friends? Name it to warn others and make them aware? Unfortunately police once again will minimise the risk towards women (and/or men) and not take it seriously. The only way to protect is to share local knowledge between students and young people to increase awareness of the police and bar are not stepping up.

ClayPotaLot · Today 19:27

Pissedoffmama · Today 19:00

Their job!

OP, forces are required to have a designated Spiking Lead. It may be worth trying to contact them and asking them if the officers you spoke with have followed the right steps. As I understand it, they are, at the very least, supposed to have secured the CCTV from the venue asap.

Bars should pay, as most do already. In most urban areas it is a requirement of local authority and licensing boards in order for them to be able to operate properly.

The cost to the police is in trawling through the CCTV, though. Which can take hours.

All bars have cctv already

The nail varnish is a myth i believe and can be unreliable

surely it must be the bar staff doing this ??
