The police could put more resources into it and follow the procedures outlined in Operation Lester. Even the police have acknowledged that spiking is poorly and inconsistently handled by most police forces.

To tackle it effectively police need to consistently act with speed to secure evidence as soon a report of suspected spiking is made. They need to collect evidence of the drug - in the victims system and, if possible, by seizing the glass used. They need to send send that evidence off for testing. They need to seize CCTV evidence before it can be destroyed and they need to interview potential witness while they might still remember things. Then they need to go through the CCTV to try and identify a potential perpetrator and, assuming they arent' still in the venue, try and identify them - possibly by following them on CCTV out of the venue elsewhere. They also need encourage people to report incidents (it's thought only around a quarter of insicendts are reported to police), to collate data on reports and analyse them for patterns so as to be able to have officers available with the best chance of catching offenders.

There has been an attempt in the last few years to try and improve things but it isn't enough of a priority in most forces. That can change if they are held to account and political pressure is put on them.

MagicalBagPuss · Today 19:41

Totally agree with the poster who said get any evidence you can as soon as you can. It is possible that the bar staff have seen this before as well, maybe with the same people who spiked your daughter's drink.

Fluffytoebeanz · Today 19:41

Pissedoffmama · Today 19:23

I get that……
But with all due respect, this should not be happening.
Everyone should be safe.
What sort of world do we live in if we’re not safe to have a drink with a friend

I was talking to a police officer on the weekend, she is a young woman and was saying that it's a huge problem, it's not necessarily drinks but also injections too. As someone who was spiked in the late 90s and sexually assaulted by someone I was working for, it is awful that it's still going on. I have a 16 yo DD

Emmasblackboard · Today 19:14

Tbf you said your own sons wanted to “beat the hell out of everyone” - how would this help?

@Pissedoffmama also said, “Of course they won’t”, @Emmasblackboard.

It is somewhat disingenuous to post the first part without the second, imo.

Imightbeinthewronghere · Today 19:45

The police don't take it seriously because when it comes down to it the evidence isn't always there......easiest thing in the world to say you've been spiked to cover your own actions

MummyWillow1 · Today 19:46

Hope your DD is ok.

The only time I was spiked it was by a woman who thought it was funny (it was not funny). Just saying as it wasn’t necessarily a man who didn’t!

InNewYorkNoShoes · Today 19:49

What is it that the police are/aren't doing that is making them crap?

I thought this was supposed to be a high priority crime!

My friend (40’s) was spiked she wasnt sexually assaulted, we think the circumstances were lucky that she didn’t, she ended up meeting her brother in the pub just after a man bought her a drink. By the time the drugs kicked in her brother realised and took her home safely.
The police didn’t care at all, she wanted them to realise that she so easily could have ended up in a terrible situation but they really didn’t care.
She desperately wanted to prevent it happening to the next girl and gave descriptions, asked the pub for help but nothing was really done, they kinda said ‘it was ok for you so forget about it’
So very sad.

catlover123456789 · Today 19:59

The bar or outside should have cctv. The police should be collecting it before it's recorded over.
I hope your daughter makes a full recovery.

Magicpaintbrush · Today 20:00

Why can't the police check the cctv??

Thank you for a comprehensive response.
I was interested in what could possibly be done to stop "spiking" so thanks for providing that info.

I used to work in bars, unless it was heaving I’m surprised a member of staff didn’t see anything. Also the only answer, unless of course the bartender has done something to the glass but let’s not go there, is the glass goes straight in your hand and never leaves. I no longer drink.

TheReflectiveQualityofGlass · Today 20:20

sunshinesuzey · Today 15:14

I don't understand how this could happen.

I don't accept drinks off anyone I don't know.

In a restaurant I watch when the wine is bought to the table and how it is opened.

If I go to a bar, I watch what the bartender/barmaid does before and when they pour my drink.

Unless you leave your drink lying around there is no reason for it to be 'spiked'.

Dons tin hat !

Goady much?

AlmostAJillSandwich · Today 20:32

If the drinks were never out of their sight, then the scary prospect is that it was the bar tender......

Mapletree1985 · Today 20:33

sunshinesuzey · Today 15:26

If what you say is true then the bar staff must be dodgy and working in cahoots with other men who use the bar.

I'm sure you won't be going there again.

Would it not be worthwhile to name the bar on social media? Saying, this happened to a woman I know at X? I'm not asking for myself personally, as I don't even live in the UK or go to bars, but no bar likes bad PR.The staff might become more alert as a result.

LBFseBrom · Today 20:34

It is appalling. I am sorry.

I always associated drink spiking with a date rape type motive.

if not, what is the motive for this crime? 🤯

Flapjak · Today 20:47

The police should be pulling all the CCTV of who was in the bar, interviewing bar staff and requesting any other goers submit any photos they took , also swabbing bottles, glasses etc- this is a crime that can result in not only rape but death. There needs to be a public outcry that police appear are so incompetent at their jobs they don't know how to begin to do a serious investigation into a serious crime - hope she gets the support she needs once she recovers physically

Mich1986 · Today 20:48

I was spiked with ketamine on a night out when I was around 22, I was sick within minutes and my friend found me collapsed in the toilet, got me into a taxi and back home where I was “asleep” for 12 hours, I remember at one point i woke up and couldn’t move my body at all, I called my friends name and luckily she was next to me, I was so lucky she found me and got me home.

AutumnAllTheWay · Today 20:51

So many goady idjits on this thread, dotted about among horrible stories of people being drugged and poisoned. Muppets.

Sorry to all who have experienced this, including myself.

Ignore those making ignorant comments.

There are perpetrators who do it "for a laugh" or, occasionally, revenge. Generally when a motive is identified it's sexual assault/rape or theft. Not necessarily date rape (as in not necessarily by someone the victim is already with). Some perpetrators drug several people in an evening to increase opportunity and move on the one that's easiest.

ClayPotaLot · Today 21:04

pimplebum · Today 19:36

All bars have cctv already

The nail varnish is a myth i believe and can be unreliable

surely it must be the bar staff doing this ??

Bar staff are rarely perpetrators. It's more likely that OP's DD was just inattentive for a tiny amount of time or, that it was done while she was paying. All these self righteous posts about how it can't happen if you never leaving your drink unattended do not reflect reality, which is that you can be with your drink the whole time, but in a bar your attention is not fully on your drink and things can happen in front of your eyes that you don't notice, let alone when you look away for a second or two. Also, there's been a rise in injections, it doesn't have to be the drink that's spiked.

I wouldn't say it couldn't possibly be the bar staff, but it's really not a given, they are much more likely to get caught than a customer and would be idiots to try.

wellstopdoingitthen · Today 21:09

It’s awful, I do hope they are better soon. It must be very scary for you all.

It does happen to boys too. My son’s friend was spiked (he doesn’t even drink alcohol). All the club wanted to do was move him outside, the police wouldn’t do anything, they laughed at him. He has T1 diabetes so it made him very, very unwell.

Minasama · Today 21:10

How do you know they were spiked, have toxicology confirmed that?

I ask because there’s a potential danger in believing your drink was spiked when actually you drank too much too fast (and it does not take much to knock you out when drinking spirits…)

I always tell my daughter to only have a few sips and if she thinks it’s having no effect to wait 20 mins and then see. Also to stop and wait if she starts feeling her head going funny. It’s literally the most useful thing my parents told me growing up.

Theft sometimes. My son’s friend had his phone stolen when he was spiked.
