Some strange responses here. If someone poisoned my drink (because that’s what it is) or the drink of someone I cared about, I would very much want to kill them. It is a very serious crime and should be treated as such. Awful it seems almost normal to have to watch out so much for it.

I don't understand how this could happen.
I don't accept drinks off anyone I don't know.
In a restaurant I watch when the wine is bought to the table and how it is opened.
If I go to a bar, I watch what the bartender/barmaid does before and when they pour my drink.
Unless you leave your drink lying around there is no reason for it to be 'spiked'.
Dons tin hat !

However, I don't understand how it could happen if someone has their drink in their hand all night.

——

I wouldn't have a big enough drink that took all night to drink for a start. I would keep it held against my chest so I would be aware if anyone tried to get close to it.
And I would use one of these https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/405152991817?_skw=anti+drink+spiking+stopper&itmmeta=01KY7S82WD34XPNDNTE1G2TT4Z&hash=item5e55000a49:g:p94AAOSwsqxmtJte&itmprp=enc%3AAQALAAAA4GfYFPkwiKCW4ZNSs2u11xDVfOpiE7sQpGohH7Xw9TVmBYT4NMBn6PFDzYgjMaD29JkRCmLw%2BIUl4jIS8jK3KfN1iPr0JYxGLcXJs7VZGAXgyuePB59Wj%2B1Uhx%2BlUX2clDbv6aIDt1PeREbgxP58FRPuuVYTzWd45WGcyCCWBe3QnsPoUjCgW69RwrDTOxTYZO5Sc5ZBuq7MrcN%2BWtYbglvJBsbDIA9VTwVcliR9aIKuycOzROLpiHrGAA1x0rXg5mlrAOQwv19yYql5OKbS47vgC%2Feofzcz%2BWKSermO9IRY%7Ctkp%3ABk9SR8CuoPnxZw

These all look like victim blaming to me, @sunshinesuzey - though I am sure you won’t accept that.

I don't follow your reasoning

How does "I don't understand how this can happen"(which I did say) become , in your mind, transposed into "these silly girls brought this on themselves" which I did not say.

IMO that's some rather convoluted logic.

Not sure why my post was deleted.

I pointed out the contradiction between @sunshinesuzey taking great precaution to protect herself from having her drink spiked (unlike the careless victims who clearly didn't) and her scepticism that drink spiking is even a thing (demanding to see stats as evidence).

There is no contradiction.

Yes I protect myself from anyone interfering with my drink as best I can.

I asked for stats to see the incidence of the problem. I didn't "demand" anything, so please don't make things up.
If the incidence of this particular crime is below a certain threshold then this could explain why some Police Forces are not investigating it as rigourously as they might.
They deploy their officers in areas where there are the biggest problems. That's a valid use of scarce resources.

her scepticism that drink spiking is even a thing (demanding to see stats as evidence).
So now you're a mind reader as well ? ^

SilenceInside · 24/07/2026 15:19

@Pissedoffmama ketamine and diazepam! Bloody hell. That's genuinely very frightening. I'm glad the police are taking it more seriously now, and have actually reviewed the CCTV for suspects. The medical implications of that combination with alcohol can be incredibly serious so I am very glad indeed that your DD and her friend are recovering relatively quickly and are able to go home.

Terfarina · 24/07/2026 15:55

People sanctimoniously thinking they could never have their drink spiked - maybe not - good for you! Increasingly these arseholes literally spike - with a needle - your wonderfulness will not help then

Offherrockingchair · 24/07/2026 16:38

I don’t get why they can’t trace the perpetrators and charge them with attempted murder, which it is. Deliberately poisoning someone?! Christ, it’s horrific!

BoredZelda · 23/07/2026 21:16

You cannot. This does not exist. You may be able to buy something that claims it can, but there is no product that has been formulated and tested/approved.

I just looked this up, sorry. It was in the works but the company changed to little test strips instead which you can take out with you, because the nail varnish wasn't reliable enough. Knew I didn't make it up!
Hope your daughter is OK op.

Well, bully for you 🙄

You might be a pro at avoiding being spiked, but it seems your empathy has gone the same way.

OP, really hope your daughter makes a speedy recovery x

What's that supposed to mean ?

Reading this, I’m imagining Suzy as either sitting with her back to the wall with Jack Reacher levels of dangerous alertness, or as Mr Bean crouched anxiously around a glass.

Unless your evening involves staring dolefully into a glass with no interest in your surroundings or interaction at all, even for a minute… you’re susceptible.

Of course you can do a lot to reduce risk. That should go without saying.

But to suggest that what you can do goes so far as to virtually eliminate risk is not just naive/arrogant, but a bit of an irresponsible message to put out there.

Read about attentional blindness - Google “the invisible gorilla”. Never assume virtual infallibility. My goodness, we’re the total opposite - astonishingly, terrifyingly blind to what’s before our very noses, even as we think we’re looking. We don’t think we’re not noticing… because we’re not noticing that we’re not noticing - something of a catch 22!

Catiette · 24/07/2026 20:02

OP, I’m so sorry and hope your daughter recovers fully in every sense. This was not her fault in the slightest degree. Obviously. No wonder you’re shaken - try to take some time to look after yourself as well as her, if possible, as you process this.

Congratulations on your vivid imagination, you're wasted here, you should be in print !

I don't think I actually said that.

I don't go to pubs & clubs and the only bars I go near are in hotels (very occasionally) or restaurants where I am known.
I can't speak for other people.

I'm very confident that I would notice a man in a gorilla suit.

user1492757084 · 25/07/2026 04:28

Follow up all possibilities with Police.

Insist that they also investigate fully from where the bar buys it's alcohol.
It could be cheap, illegal alcohol like that which is served in SE Asia.

madaboutpurple · 25/07/2026 08:11

Hi Op I do hope your DD and her friend recover quickly. Also hoping the man gets caught and locked up. This is a very upsetting situation.

Why? There's no evidence of that. It's enormously unlikely, and.irrelevant to this case.

As PPs have said, spiking can happen anywhere. The perpetrator can be anyone. The victim can be anyone.

I'm guessing you dont know the 'man in a gorilla suit' reference. Everyone thinks they would spot him, only around 50% do.

Of course it's horrific.

Of course it's not attempted murder.

And of course it's very difficult to police. How would you go about tracing the perpetrators.

I am not responsible for other people's comprehension or lack of it.

Meanings are in people not in words, their interpretation isn't my responsibility.

Dear me, and I thought you were all for taking a degree of responsibility for yourself, not pushing it onto other people ;)

fwiw, yes, you really do come across as victim blaming. And deliberately so.

Are you OK ?

My mum is 78. She had her drink spiked when she was 17. Her legs went numb and 2 men put her in their car and drove to the middle of nowhere. She (and her friend) threatened to throw themselves out of the moving car. They were dropped off.

I was confident about that, too. Every single person who takes the test is (or, rather, when test is administered under the right conditions - with the right lead-in and no tells - every single person who fails it is stunned).

Anyway, a significant proportion fail although they wouldn't have dreamt it possible: your last sentence above is exactly the point.

I couldn't believe it when I missed it. I rewatched the vid three times convinced YouTube must have switched it in the minutes it took to watch, it was so hard to believe. It's a pity I've spoilt it for you so you can't find out if you're in the group like me - it's an unforgettable, unpleasant feeling. But you can read the research at least.

And while I don't usually to and fro on discussions - not much point - it's hard to understand you saying you didn't say that. It's right there, in

I don't understand how this could happen > (list of sensible precautions) > Unless you leave your drink lying around there is NO reason for it to be 'spiked'. (My formatting & caps).
