To think that it’s a bit sad that women on this site look to Sex and the City as some sort of life guru?l

Honestly you can barely open a thread without cries of ‘he’s just not that into you’ or ‘sounds like you’re a post-it girl’.

It was a (brilliant) show but it was just a show. It’s not real. It’s not real life situations. It’s not advice to live your life by. It makes you sound stupid.

As a previous poster said, post it note girl was used on a thread about a couple who had spent years being casual, then on and off, seeing other people and now together they meet up once/twice every other week despite living five minutes away. I think 'post it' note implied that she was casual/disposable, not worthy of a face to face conversation or a call. I have never seen it before and don't think it will be a thing.

He's just not I that into you' is solid advice though.

I used to work with a gay guy (yes it's relevant!). And he used to say 'Big tool 4 you?' (pause) Another drink for you?' when doing a drinks run.

CynicalSunni · 23/07/2026 07:12

I didnt realise using a couple of phrases from a tv show mean't you lived your life by it. I must be using them wrong.

It's more likely some things have just gone into common parlance and lots wouldnt know the origin.

LightlyRoamingOcelots · 23/07/2026 07:20

Puley · 22/07/2026 21:14

I have read both on threads today! It is absolutely constant.

I think you are confusing cause and effect. Yes those are phrases that are regularly usedon mumsnet but they aren't in our vocabulary because of a sitcom from a decade ago but just that they are part of modern colloquial vocabulary. I doubt they even originated in SATC but nevertheless one doesn't need to have watched the show to have the phrases in ones vocabulary. I have never watched it but I understand that the show depicted a variety of "typical" (possibly stereotypical in some cases) women in a variety of situations and it doesn't seem remotely surprising that some of the reallife dilemmas that real life women talk about on this site might occasionally use the same phrases but it's weird to think that this is because of the television show!

Everybodysinthehousetonight · 23/07/2026 07:24

'He's just not that into you' saved me a lot of time in my youth🤣.

Love Sex and the City, might watch it again 😀

mumumental · 23/07/2026 07:29

I don’t know what you are talking about OP. It’s nothing like that.

Backedoffhackedoff · 23/07/2026 10:38

Minasama · 22/07/2026 22:57

There was a book called “he’s just not that into you”, that’s how I knew the phrase, not SATC related.

this is exactly where I thought it was from. He’s not that into you was a self help book basically telling women rather than fighting for his attention and ruminating on why he’s treating you sub optimally, the answer was that he just doesn’t care.

i watched satc religiously and don’t remember it from there at all

Crushed23 · 23/07/2026 10:44

I have no idea what this thread is about tbh but I love SATC and I’ve watched it dozens of times. I am fully aware it’s fictional and unrealistic, but the show has had a huge influence on my life - it’s one of the main reasons I moved to NYC as a single woman in my 30s (which turned out to be the best decision, how I met DH etc etc).

Those who hate the show/characters come across as far more obsessed than us fans 🤷‍♀️

Savvysix1984 · 23/07/2026 10:50

Do they? I loved SAtC when it was on tv but haven’t watched it in years. I certainly haven’t based my love life on it. Their lives are so removed from the typical woman’s that I can’t see any comparison.

LexiFeatherston · 23/07/2026 10:59

friedaklein · 22/07/2026 21:14

I am so BORED I could die!

Hey - don't steal my catchphrase!

Crushed23 · 23/07/2026 11:14

The characters’ lives are really not “so far removed” from the lives of affluent women in their 30s living in major cities like NYC and London. I can relate to an awful lot of the show despite being the next generation along. Cocktail bars, brunch, pilates classes, living by yourself in a 1-bed apartment, dating, caring about looks/clothes, going to friends’ weddings, baby showers and christenings.

AgnesX · 23/07/2026 11:23

Used to watch SATC back in the day but don't remember either of those phrases.

It was a world away from a bog standard life in Scotland - all of these sitcoms are and still wouldn't dream of using advice from any of them.

Flamingojune · 23/07/2026 11:28

Are people allowed to quote dickens, shakespeare and twain or is it just modern story tellers not allowed?

SocksAndTheCity · 23/07/2026 11:45

Calliopespa · 23/07/2026 00:10

Thanks, some good suggestions.

Was AJLT the recent one where Carrie was failing to produce any believable chemistry with Duncan in the basement, who was inexplicably impressed with her dire writing and who is responsible for the most self-consciously delivered line ever when he "meets" her shoe collection? Cos I didn't like that one! Carrie looked sort of drunk and depraved wandering the streets with her coat dragging along like an impromptu street-sweeper machine. And Miranda seemed to have dropped about 80 IQ points.

That is the very one 🤣☺️

🤐 It was a sad low point!

Inmyuggs · 23/07/2026 12:04

Loved sex in the city
Who cares!
I hate abbreviated stuff...
Poms come up with some strange words and sayings..hoblibobs or whatever..huh.
Samatha live on you were the best.

dayslikethese1 · 23/07/2026 18:13

I always liked Samantha's blunt advice "spray it don't say it" etc. and her test of a good relationship being whether you grimace/cause frown lines or not😆

GinaandGin · 23/07/2026 18:36

Dontlletmedownbruce · 22/07/2026 21:15

I have never seen this show referenced here, nor have I heard those comments. Plus the phrase 'he's not that into you' existed long before the show. It sounds like you are the one who might be a bit obsessed OP.

Yes .. i think it was a book before miranda quoted it

Miranda didn't quote it. It was Carrie's new boyfriend Berger, when meeting the girls for the first time.

Miranda had been on a date but he hadn't called. The girls made excuses, saying of course he's going to call. Miranda asked Berger what he thought. Berger said, something like I think you'll get an awkward email saying that he's busy with work or he has to go away etc. It's no big deal 'He's just not that into you. If we are interested we are coming up for coffee, we are booking the next date we are picking up the phone'.

This was a lightbulb moment for Miranda.

BurntBroccoli · 23/07/2026 21:48

There’s actually a film and a book called “He’s just not that into you”. It was life changing for me reading that! Stopped wasting time on blokes who clearly weren’t and started to just dump them immediately.

Edited

Yes and she then went around forcing her lightbulb moment on other women whether they wanted the advice or not! 😂

So many excellent quotes in SATC. Just because you use them, doesn't mean you live your life by them.

"He's just not that into you" could save a lot of people, a lot of time.

My personal favourite "He can amuse my bouche."

Mine is ‘sometimes you just want to be with the one who makes you laugh’.

Never having watched SATC I had no idea ‘he’s just not that into you’ was used in the show. And I’ve never heard the other phrase, here or anywhere else. We are obviously reading very different threads.
