Honestly you can barely open a thread without cries of ‘he’s just not that into you’ or ‘sounds like you’re a post-it girl’.

It was a (brilliant) show but it was just a show. It’s not real. It’s not real life situations. It’s not advice to live your life by. It makes you sound stupid.

And even then, some 25 of years ago when I was young, me and my friends just drank a lot of Cosmopolitans and coveted Carrie’s shoe collection. We didn’t use it for actual life advice!

The phrase did not exist, famously anyway, before the show. It was said in the show, and that coined the self help book, film etc.

Those phrases were in use before SATC though. Maybe get more exposure to US TV shows and then come back and bemoan the real issue - the creep of Americanisms into English. If you think that’s an issue (debatable).

But people also say "time to get your ducks in a row" and "who else hates the word hollibobs" and "it's called parenting, you should try it" and loads of other Mumsnet tritenesses. Nobody on SATC ever said any of that.

I love it too but wouldn’t base advice on it.

Those are also annoying but at least those aren’t quoting lines from sitcoms as if it’s safe advice they’re imparting.

Tbh though, ‘he’s just not that into you’ is absolutely solid advice. The number of women turning themselves inside out to excuse shitty behaviour, lack of contact, commitment issues, is depressing. It does all boil down to that really. It’s a lesson I wish I’d learned when I was fresh on the dating scene. Would have saved a lot of hassle.

“He’s not that into you” was not made famous by sex and the city it was made famous by the author of the subsequent book of the same name who took it from sex and the city and created an entire franchise.

They weren’t in use before the tv show. How would calling someone a post it note girl make any sense at all prior to that episode of SATC?
