Honestly you can barely open a thread without cries of ‘he’s just not that into you’ or ‘sounds like you’re a post-it girl’.

It was a (brilliant) show but it was just a show. It’s not real. It’s not real life situations. It’s not advice to live your life by. It makes you sound stupid.

Perhaps you’re attributing too much to SATC and not enough to the general zeitgeist.

Comedian Greg Behrendt was a writer on the show brought in for ‘a straight man’s perspective’ and coined the “he’s just not that into you” phrase I believe. I saw him at the Fringe years ago and he was talking about it.

SATC would be my specialist subject on Mastermind. I wouldn’t say I live my life by it but I loved it at the time and it reminds me of a very happy time in my life.

I've never noticed that on here; the only time I've seen someone bring up the show is on the Telly Addicts board, and most people feel it's somewhat dated even if they enjoy(ed) it. The "not that into you" thing has been widespread for years, multiple books and articles with that title - I didn't even know it was from Sex and The City. "Post-it girl" would make me think of Romy & Michele's High School Reunion.

S&TC had far more serious drama and characterisation in it. To That end, New York was arguably the fifth or sixth character and very much part of the show. Paris is not emphasised like that in Emily in Paris. We also have Emily in other cities.And it's basically all silly humour, there's not really anything serious in it. But we have so little comedy now it's really nice to have.

BTW, are you named for the character in Grey's Anatomy? You will have a nice surprise in Emily in Paris if so!

i'm particularly sentimental about S&TC because I worked in New York for a chunk of time when they were filming it. They didn't actually film a lot of it there so when you occasionally saw them, it was nice. One of my friends lived in the same building as one of the not Main characters

Obviously not everyone had HBO so they used to be watch parties in bars. It was so much fun. And a really happy time of life. I presume that version of New York doesn't exist any. more in the same way that London of the 2000s doesn't exist anymore! I don't actually know because I haven't been back for more than 10 years. No wait ...12..wow. But anyway, happy times and that's why I'm over invested!

There was a book called “he’s just not that into you”, that’s how I knew the phrase, not SATC related.

You could also try The Bold Type @Calliopespa ; it's set at a New York magazine and the women's friendships are far nicer and more believable than SATC ever was.

Or you could hate watch And Just Like That, which I bought the full set of just so I could do so whenever I felt like it 😀. I can't remember seeing any of the above mentioned on here, though?

Yes “he’s just not that into you” did originate on SATC. TV shows can occasionally come up with good lines, even bad TV shows.

I did an advanced search… in a thread asking whether someone should persevere with a shit relationship someone commented “Sorry to say it, but I'd also assume he is going to leave you when he finds someone else - to quote a male friend of mine, you sound like his 'post-it note girl' - you're easy, you're there, you're convenient, you fulfill a need. But you're still a post-it - disposable. But again, only you know what your relationship looks like from the inside.”

The OP in that thread then says the post it thing comes from SATC. I’m not convinced by that - I don’t think Berger was saying Carrie was disposable with his choice of stationery, just that he was a cowardly twat who grabbed the first piece of paper he could find as he ran away. But he did look good in that Prada shirt!

I can understand that sentimentality. I used to enjoy watching it because they were always one "life phase" ahead of me, but also because it felt like a trip to NY from the comfort of the sofa.

And I know what you mean about London of the 2000s. I think it was the pandemic that rebooted London as a slightly different city? Or online shopping?

Was AJLT the recent one where Carrie was failing to produce any believable chemistry with Duncan in the basement, who was inexplicably impressed with her dire writing and who is responsible for the most self-consciously delivered line ever when he "meets" her shoe collection? Cos I didn't like that one! Carrie looked sort of drunk and depraved wandering the streets with her coat dragging along like an impromptu street-sweeper machine. And Miranda seemed to have dropped about 80 IQ points.

I'm going to have to plead guilty to using the phrase "he's just not that into you", but I never watched any SATC. I was a young teen at the time and the only way I would have got to watch a TV show with 'sex' in its title was if my mother had been comatose in hospital. And even then, I think a sixth sense would have woken her up, and sent her home to switch the TV off!

I'll take your word for it that the TV show was the origin, but sometimes phrases take on life independently of their creator. I picked the phrase up from the self-help book of the same title, which I secretly borrowed from the library and read in my room.

I love SATC (though not as a life guide!) but have never seen it referenced here. What's a post-it girl; a girl you dump? 'He's just not that into you' can be solid advice honestly.

But using a phrase arguably popularized by a certain show doesn’t mean you are basing opinions or advice on the show. From what you describe op, none is saying ‘now what would Carrie have done in this situation? Ah yes, that’s exactly what one should do then’.

think how many phrases originated with Shakespeare. If I say something is like a ‘wild goose chase’ it doesn’t mean I’m modelling my life on what Romeo would have done, does it!
