Why is there no solution to the 'used-once-but-not-dirty' clothes pile?

We all have this, don't we? A pile of clothes on a chair in the bedroom that aren't dirty enough to wash but not clean enough to go back in the wardrobe.

Mine sit on a chair looking untidy.

Try as I might, I can't find a solution. Blanket ladders aren't sturdy enough to put up with daily use, chairs take up a lot of space, hooks don't work for two people's worth of clothes.

AIBU for being frustrated there is not a magical solution to this? Or is there one that is being gate-kept by the eternally tidy and house proud crew?

There really shouldn't be any need for this unless you've got a particularly dirty job, poor personal hygiene issues or medical reasons. Washing every mortal thing every day is awful for the environment and bad for your clothes.

DH and I have a coat stand each.

Clothes either end up straight in the wash (too sweaty / dirty to wear again), or I wear them over a few days so that every week I only have two or three outfits on rotation and they all go in the wash at the weekend. They are either hung up or folded on "the chair". The trick is to not let them accumulate beyond a week. The only items that go back in the wardrobe are real wool as they tend not to hold smells.

Doesn't totally get rid of the chair but keeps it looking tidy and to a minimum.

I have shelves in my wardrobe they go on the top shelf so I know they are worn

Had a chairdrobe when I was a student.
And a floordrobe too.

Couldn't be doing with that now.
Things get hung back up in the wardrobe if they are clean. No problem.

Floordrobe here. A jacket etc or skirt can go back, but jumpers? Trousers? Nope, they’re not allowed back in.

People using Febreze - ugh! How can you bear it!!

The clothes moths! That's the reason I don't put them back in the cupboard. Well that, and also that I'm lazy!

well, I am somewhat of a slattern but also keen to save the planet so

once or more worn clothes cannot go back in the wardrobe, this is gross even to me and as a PP said may attract moths
as for Febreze this is even more gross
we have quite a deep bottom shelf on the bookshelves on our room, deep enough for 2 fairly big baskets- clothes that don't yet need washing go in there- ideally this is emptied each week but some things stay there longer if they've only been worn once and not needed again for example

I never rewear tops. Trousers/shorts I will wear the same pair for several days running. So they only really need somewhere to go overnight, for which the floor suffices.

Even jeans?

We each have a basket in our rooms that we use for these clothes to keep them out of the way and tidy

How do these system work with coats and jackets?

I hang mine back in the wardrobe. I wear things several times, particularly jeans, jumpers, difficult to wash things.

Tops always in the wash after one day.

We have a sleigh style bed so jeans/trousers to be reworn next day just looped over the end.

More tricky things that might not be reused next day like wool jumpers have a shelf in the wardrobe for them.

They hang on a hook on the back of the bedroom door.

All my hangers with unworn clothes face to the left, when I've worn an item I'll let it air then hang it back in the wardrobe facing right. I can tell at a glance how the hanger tops are facing. It's a no-brainer for me.

When did everyone start using chairs instead of the, perfectly designed for this purpose, stationary bike?

Jeans are hung on a hanger on the back of the spare room door. Tops and dresses on the steamer rack. Nothing is worn more than twice, if it's been on all day 12+ hours it needs washed.

I have a big shelf in the wardrobe for worn once. Having said that really you shouldn’t put worn clothes back in the wardrobe long term, stale sweat attracts moths. You might think they don’t smell but it’s there. You know charity shop smell, it’s that, the idea of clean enough clothes.

I hang my bra on the back of the bathroom door.
For jumpers, trousers, skirts etc I have a valet stand from Ikea. I tend to wear the same skirt /trousers 2 times, with different tops, then it goes in the wash.
The pyjamas are on the back of the bathroom door too.
I wear cashmere jumpers mainly, they are on the valet stand for a bit, then folded and put on a rack on top of my coat rack. When I’ve used all of them a few times, they all go in the wash.
