Why is there no solution to the 'used-once-but-not-dirty' clothes pile?

We all have this, don't we? A pile of clothes on a chair in the bedroom that aren't dirty enough to wash but not clean enough to go back in the wardrobe.

Mine sit on a chair looking untidy.

Try as I might, I can't find a solution. Blanket ladders aren't sturdy enough to put up with daily use, chairs take up a lot of space, hooks don't work for two people's worth of clothes.

AIBU for being frustrated there is not a magical solution to this? Or is there one that is being gate-kept by the eternally tidy and house proud crew?

I wish I had not read this thread. Making me feel ill. I’m glad the men in my house aren’t reading this and copying, I have rules for them to follow like only clean clothes ever go in the airing cupboard. I keep clean, dirty, worn slightly clothes all separate at all times. My house is not that tidy so I dread to think how other people’s homes are. Who on earth wants dirty smelly clothes next to clean ones.

if I wear something for just a couple of hours eg a dress for date night, I just spray neat vodka around the armpits and then rewear again before washing. Never had an issue yet.
T-shirts get washed after each wear as do pjs etc. Items close to my skin get washed after each wear.

Just put them away again. It's obvious

I just wear them once and wash them personally

Tops and dresses etc I hang on a hanger on the handle of my wardrobe door. Anything else is folded onto a pouffe. I usually wear it again eventually. Usually because I’ve got what I’m wearing dirty. It saves putting something clean on when I’ve not showered.

I have a solution. I rarely wear anything more than once. Just don’t like the thought of it.
PJs for 2 days is the most and they go under the pillow.
Everything else is straight in the washing basket.

There is a solution. I have a stand alone hanging rail in my spare room, bought very cheaply from Argos, I suppose, unless you already have one, a spare room is not so cheap. The added advantage is that the clothes get an airing which they wouldn't in a wardrobe. Additionally, the clothes are on view as a reminder that they need to be worn again. It is OK to keep slightly worn clothes in the wardrobe, but with change of season, or change of taste, you may find that they stay there in that condition for a year or more!

If they are "not clean enough to go to the wardrobe" surely they are not clean to wear again?

Offload your chair pile into the laundry basket - problem solved.

Hang on a minute - you wear stuff, then hang it on a rail, and wear again after a year without washing it first?

Has anyone suggested the Dana K. White (a slob comes clean) solution? If so, sorry to repeat: a row of hooks (many pretty or minimalist ones are available) screwed to
the back of the bedroom door.

That top/skirt/pair of jeans you might or might not wear tomorrow can hang out there until you decide to wear them or put then in the wash. Although I do tend to hang ‘bottoms’ back in the wardrobe.

Tops shouldn’t go back in the wardrobe or drawer though; moths are particularly attracted to the scent of a woman!

edited to add: they only ever stay there for a couple of days.

I have a drawer for this. Top drawer so I check this one first when deciding what to wear.
Sometimes gets filled with cardigans and goodies though.

Nope, not me. Everything goes into the wash basket at the end of the day. Nothing gets left on a chair. I am a very tidy person.

I remember a thread on gransnet showing bedroom chairdrobes, but I cant find it.

Throw them in the basket with your "washed and dried but not yet folded nor put away" clothes ....or am I the only one with one of those?

I agree OP. I have a basket where I dump worn but not dirty clothes. I'd like something more elegant. I certainly will wear a top 2 days running if it's a wfh day as I am basically sat at a desk doing nothing. I have other clothes I exercise in. Maybe I am smelling like an old lady ? I don't know but no one has complained. But washing things so frequently that don't need it seems crazy

So in January when it's freezing if you wear a long sleeved top with a woolly jumper on top, you're washing the jumper when it hasn't even touched your skin??

Surely you can see there would be times something simply doesnt need washing. Eg you change into a specific top to smarten up for an evening event and its only been worn for 2-3 hours?? Surely you don't wash something in that scenario, its so wasteful of water and energy? Or are you quite a sweaty/smelly person generally

Moths love worn garments in a dark quiet place , never put worn things in a wardrobe

I never wear tops twice, even in winter nor dresses
I wear trousers/ skirts again and would just wear those until they are washed 3 days or so
Folded on a small chest in my room
No floordrobe or chair of doom here

Sometimes I just rinse things through in the bathroom sink and wear them again. It's easy to get things dry when it's been this warm.

I will wear clothes several times over the summer months. I hang them up outside in the sunlight inside out and that is enough to kill any bacteria. A bit of a breeze is enough to blow any dust away. Any smells disappear also. Sometimes a light re-iron, but not always. Things tend to get washed every 4th or 5th wear. The only exception is underwear and white shirts, which disclosure on collar and cuffs. They get washed after each day.

This year with such strong sunlight and heat has been brilliant for natural recycling. Not many people know, or even want to know this trick. I have only seen perhaps two others on here over the years that do this.

I would rewear a variety of clothes from days in the office and the denim skirt I am wearing today, rather like jeans, has had several wears.
I only put outer wear back in the wardrobe - skirts, trousers, jackets and jeans after suitable airing.

I drape it over the bannister to give it a bit of an airing and then turn it inside out and hang back in the wardrobe so I know it’s been worn once

The only clothes I would rewear are jackets, trousers or jeans. I never wear tops or dresses twice as I worry they will smell. I hang the shorts / trousers over the end of my bed!

Yes, I may sweat more than average I guess???

The jumpers won’t last long being washed that often surely?

I have one of the freestanding mirrors from ikea with hooks on the back for hanging worn but not dirty clothes. I do try to wear them 2-3 days in a row so I don’t have too much our at once but sometimes can’t be helped.

Not necessary, or good for the planet, to wash everything after one wash!
