Why is there no solution to the 'used-once-but-not-dirty' clothes pile?

We all have this, don't we? A pile of clothes on a chair in the bedroom that aren't dirty enough to wash but not clean enough to go back in the wardrobe.

Mine sit on a chair looking untidy.

Try as I might, I can't find a solution. Blanket ladders aren't sturdy enough to put up with daily use, chairs take up a lot of space, hooks don't work for two people's worth of clothes.

AIBU for being frustrated there is not a magical solution to this? Or is there one that is being gate-kept by the eternally tidy and house proud crew?

We don’t all have an issue with sweating and smelling during a normal day unless it’s exercise wear. Of course if you do, the garment needs washing!

My point precisely. So it's not true to say, 'No item of clothing needs washing after every gentle wear,' is it.

PuppyMonkey · 23/07/2026 12:14

Can’t see the point of the big cumbersome valet things people are posting pix of. Might as well pile used clothes neatly on a chair as stick them on those getting in the way of everyone. Confused

No item of clothing needs washing after every gentle wear.
What's a 'gentle wear'? Say I wear a T-shirt for a typical day (sitting at home at my desk, out for about half an hour in the day to have a walk/buy lunch etc, sometimes cooking dinner, sometimes not). It will need washing at the end of the day, because I sweat and it starts to smell.

I’m not the person you asked but here’s an example from me. Say I’m wearing a t shirt at home during the day. I then go to the cinema in the evening for 2 hours. I put a jumper on top of my t shirt as it’s freezing in there with the air con on. I get home and take it off again. All I have done is drive to the cinema, sit watching a film and come home again. In my opinion that jumper will not need washed.

Another example is my job. I wear a uniform all day at work. I’ll drive to and from work in a t shirt and jeans. Do they need washing after 20 mins there and 20 mins back? (When I get home I shower then put comfy pj type clothes on for the evening). That t shirt and jeans do not need washing after a 40 minute wear.

I absolutely cannot stand this wishy washy attitude - either it’s clean and goes back in the wardrobe or it isn’t and goes in the washing basket. My brother’s house is an absolute shit tip because of all of the stuff that doesn’t get put away for ridiculous reasons like this

I totally agree with you. I couldn't live like that. Clothes everywhere except where they should be, in the wardrobe or washing machine

I agree, in your examples even I (a sweaty Betty) would probably not need to wash them. I do have clothes that I’ll wear two or three times for a slow yoga/mobility session too. So if that’s a gentle wear, fine.
But an all-day wear, even if I’m just sitting at my desk at home, will usually require washing.

FallenNight · 23/07/2026 15:15

But if you put them back in the wardrobe you forget you have worn them and then put them back in after 2, 3 4 wears.....how do you keep track of wears and needing washing? Or do you just wash if visibly dirty, or smelly?

The questions.

I have a chairdrobe

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 23/07/2026 15:47

Hanging up is the answer

Your description includes cooking. Gentle wear to me is simply going out somewear and floating around for the day. I’m genuinely surprised by the amount of arguing on this issue. I don’t mean you particularly, but for some it’s like someone challenging their religion.

Tummygrumbling · 23/07/2026 19:19

We wear the same clothes for a week when working outside getting sweaty and dirty. It’s pointless putting clean clothes on every day as they are dirty and smelly immediately

Itsalittlebitwarm · 23/07/2026 20:21

I just have the same pile as you but it's never that big as I'll wear the next day.

HoldMyWine · 23/07/2026 20:46

Why don’t you put them back in the wardrobe?

Cosyreader1 · 23/07/2026 21:33

Yes...you hang them over the baby gate or the ledge at the top of the stairs!

ApolloandDaphne · 24/07/2026 09:21

I have cardigans and jumpers (mainly wool ones) i wear on and off for months without washing. If I didn't hang them back in the wardrobe I would have more than a dozen cardigans and jumpers hanging about elsewhere. Makes no sense to me.

omghereistrouble · 24/07/2026 12:42

put them back where they came from

DefiantRabbit9 · 24/07/2026 13:08

Pile? Maybe there's one item. I wear it the next day and then it goes in the laundry basket.

NullaEffugium · 21/07/2026 19:38

Well it is a fact that as we age our sense of smell degrades into nose blindness. So you can’t trust the sniff test.

Yes jeans get washed too. I tend to wear jeans when I’m doing physical labour in the garden or diy about the house or on a hike/horse ride so they are definitely always dirty after one wear. Jeans aren’t loungewear.

You're not supposed to wash jeans after every use. They are meant to be washed every 5-10 wears. Levis, after 10 wears.

😂 ‘not supposed to’
Denim is simply heavy weight cotton there is no reason not to wash them after every wear other than cosmetic ones that are based in the aesthetics of fashion.

ElizaSchuyler · 25/07/2026 19:39

I hang it on the wardrobe door overnight after a quick spritz with a vodka spray then the next day it goes back into the wardrobe.

FluentOP · 25/07/2026 20:45

I hang them back in the wardrobe on the right hand side of some empty coat hangers. All the clean clothes are on the left of the coat hangers .

Grendel7 · 25/07/2026 21:58

EndlessWeeding · 21/07/2026 18:00

Just hang them back in the wardrobe if they are clean enough for another wear?

Oh,yak!

Grendel7 · 25/07/2026 22:00

PawMaw · 21/07/2026 18:03

I hang jeans/trousers and hoodies back up in the wardrobe 🤷‍♀️ Pyjamas folded and put under my pillow.

I wouldn't rewear a tshirt as I'm a sweaty Betty so I suppose this has never been a problem for me.

Oh,pass the bucket! Pyjamas under the pillow???!!! And you admit to being a sweaty betty, this just beggars belief!

Grendel7 · 25/07/2026 22:04

TotallyTangerineGeum · 21/07/2026 18:12

I must be the only person who washes every item of clothing after each wear. Especially at this time of year!

No,you are not weird, you are a normal CLEAN person unlike all the other posters.

ElizaSchuyler · 25/07/2026 22:37

i wear a lot of natural fabrics that shouldn’t be washed often like cashmere, silk & linen.

Me too. Lots of sanctimonious ‘I wash after every wear’ posters here. I wonder how many of them are wearing polyester

I'm not a denim manufacturer, but that is what Levis always had said about caring for their jeans and it has stuck in my head. I googled the general advice.

I guess a lot of people wear throw-away fashion these days and don't care about caring for their clothes or having things last in good condition.
