Tea

To find tea drinkers exhausting? 🍵
I might have the very odd cup in the rare event of a hangover. Dh would only have one if a guest is present. When we have tea - drinking guests they will drink about 3 cups in a row , five times per day. I've started telling them to help themselves to a cup because it's so exhausting keeping up with making cups of tea. Why not have a glass of water every now & then? There really is no need for copious amounts imo- especially in this weather. Are they addicted?

I'm wondering whether to report this thread as a hate crime against British culture 😄

Special mention for anybody claiming that abomination of dust and depression that is decaffinated tastes exactly the same, please.

Although if it does taste the same, they probably need to be on charges for whatever the hell they did to the real thing as well; waving the teabag at the mug from the other side of the kitchen and adding a splash of water to the milk, I suspect.

NELEAF · Today 07:52

I drink tea but only maybe 3 cups a day if that. But I'd rather be behind a tea drinker in a cafe queue than someone ordering 4 coffees - they take soo long to make!

Loobyloot · Today 07:53

Tea is a great diversionary tactic when there are household tensions.

ChopstickNovice · Today 07:56

I love tea. Just had two cups!
My friends and I are all tea drinkers but would never expect each other to make all the drinks. We take turns. If I go to someone's house I always offer to make the tea even the first time.

I’m enjoying my third cup of the day as I read this.

Artesia · Today 08:04

You sound easily exhausted. Maybe take a break, pop your feet up and have a nice cuppa to recharge

You are my people. OP is obviously a wrong 'un.

Weeellokthen · Today 08:21

If you are "exhausted" putting the kettle on a few times, you have a bigger issue 😂

Bluesclues1 · Today 08:24

I love a tea but only a couple of cups a day (currently pregnant so unfortunately on the decaf which isn’t the same!). Those who have pints and pints a day, aren’t you worried about teeth staining??

GentlePanda · Today 08:26

How big are you mugs? Honestly, I feel huge disappointment if someone serves me a tea in a normal size cup leaving me wanting another and another. I use the massive Starbucks ones at home that hold 500ml. Give someone one of those once and they’ll be happy for a while!

Bigreddog25 · Today 08:28

Are they actually drinking 15 cups of tea a day or is that an exaggeration?
I would not make anyone this many cups of tea.

I can drink up to about 5 a day if at work. But 15!?

Yorkshire decaf doesn’t taste exactly the same as normal but it does taste like tea. Tetley decaf is horrible.

JumpingRabbit · Today 08:37

Sat here with my cup of tea reading this 😂

I have to have a cup when I wake up and when I arrive in the office. I mainly drink it when working or when chatting to friends. I have a couple of friends that come over and we can easily have 2-3 cups over a 90 min chat.

Omg this is such a relief to hear. The tea bag phobia. I've never mentioned it to anyone because, you know, I don't want to sound completely insane but I'm so glad to hear I'm not the only one.

I have a similar issue with coffee spoons and mugs which have had coffee in them.

In fact, I have mugs that people can use for drinking coffee out of and then I have my mugs. If someone drinks coffee out of one of my mugs, it gets relegated to communal use, never to be drunk from by me again!!!

Edited

We had a loft extension built some years ago and my biggest worry was all the mugs of tea I was going to have to make (i was at home). Sure enough....

I avoid making tea as much as possible. I leave it to my husband. As I don't drink it I'm always sure my attempts are rubbish.

I hate coffee just as much btw but at least there are no tea bags!

Back in the first days of Covid when there was no test, lots of dead people, next to no NHS and I was on immunosuppressant medication, I went to make a cuppa at work. Started with coffee and that tasted of ditchwater. Decided maybe the coffee had gone stale, so made a cup of tea instead (we always bought Yorkshire), but that tasted even worse.

Turned out that somebody had decided to replace the office tea and coffee with decaf.

TitanicWasAGreatMovie · Today 09:14

I am certainly addicted to caffine/tea and 15 cups a day would be quite normal. Judging by the dodgy research quoted up thread, I'll live forever.

I do bring my own teabags and make my own cuppa when staying with friends though. But, my family are exactly the same if not worse then me, so no worries there.

teabags are IME easier to deal with than coffee grounds. If you mean instant coffee, no wonder you don’t like it.

I love tea, it's my little comfort and also settles my stomach and literally makes me feel better (I'm feeling ill quite a lot lately for various reasons.) Tea is a lifesaver! Water isn't the same as doesn't have milk/sugar and other things in it. Coffee I like too but that makes me feel worse, dehydrates, makes me feel more anxious, shaky and harsh on the stomach.

Shoxfordian · Today 09:54

Show them where the kettle is and let them help themselves to tea

I also don't drink much tea or coffee

HardyPinkPanda · Today 10:04

Hi Five @Poppycorn123! This post made me laugh. I don't mind making people tea although I can't stand the stuff. But for me it's the tea rituals that get my goat and the phrases that go with it... 'gasping' for a 'brew', a 'cuppa', a tea break. The discussions on the best way to make it, warming the pot, milk first or not, mug or cup, the best tea bags... And don't get me started on the way people take a first sip and sigh like it's the elixir of life or that all problems can be fixed with tea. And then there's the tea paraphernalia.. who wants a tea towel or a kitchen clock or god forbid a framed piece of wall art, dedicated to a tea pot??!

Obviously half joking (or am I?)! But solidarity to you with questioning the ritual of tea!

One year for a Secret Santa someone gave me a tea tray cover. I had no idea what it was- i don't use tea trays- and had to ask the organiser if she could ask the giver what it was!!

BillieWiper · Today 10:23

I have two sugars in my tea so if I drank that much it wouldn't be very healthy. I only have one a day in the morning. Maybe a second very occasionally.

I do like peppermint and fennel tea though. That's really healthy.

I guess people are addicted though!

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · Today 10:33

I’m not sure my FiL does anything but make tea anymore!

BauhausOfEliott · Today 11:03

I don't really understanding people getting worked up about someone else's drink preferences. I can't say it strikes me as 'exhausting' to put the kettle on for a guest, but my friends/family would just help themselves after the first one.

I drink tea all the time. Yes, I could drink plain water instead - just as I could eat unflavoured porridge oats for dinner instead of spaghetti bolognese, or wear a plain beige cotton sack every day instead of my favourite jeans - but I prefer to have a little joy in my life, so I drink (and eat, and wear) the things I actually like.

When I go to the office, I drink about six mugs of tea throughout the day. My colleague, by contrast, drinks endless glasses of water with slices of lemon floating in them. Struggling to see why one would bother you more than the other, really.

I've been drinking tea since I was a tiny child.
