Tea

To find tea drinkers exhausting? 🍵
I might have the very odd cup in the rare event of a hangover. Dh would only have one if a guest is present. When we have tea - drinking guests they will drink about 3 cups in a row , five times per day. I've started telling them to help themselves to a cup because it's so exhausting keeping up with making cups of tea. Why not have a glass of water every now & then? There really is no need for copious amounts imo- especially in this weather. Are they addicted?

You'd hate my friends and family @Poppycorn123 we only drink tea. Lose leaf for the 1st cup and teabags for the rest of the day, on average I drink about 4 pints of it per day and im mot even close to being the biggest tea Jenny in the group 😀
That said I think im going to go make a fresh pot of proper breakfast tea

The first thing I do when somebody comes to my house, is offer them a cup of tea and when they’ve drank that I’ll offer them a second one and unless I want them to go, I’ll offer them another one. If I wasn’t offered a cup of tea when I went to visit somebody I would think they didn’t want me to stay. Offering somebody another cup of tea says that they are welcome to stay at least another half hour, even if they decline.

YANBU. I have never tried tea in my life... and I am 48! I hate the smell.and the idea of drinking boiling water is horrid to me. In work, I sit near our kettle and am absolutely amazed at how many colleagues seem to drink tea constantly. As soon as one cup is finished the bloody thing is boiling again...

Poppycorn123 · Yesterday 20:41

Thanks for the replies & insight! I suppose I just don't 'get' it but friends and family seem to really enjoy their tea. I don't begrudge them btw! Just find it tiring , asking people if they want a cup of tea, then asking if they want a onother. It feels relentless 😅 I don't drink coffee either, I would have the occasional hot chocolate (I have a hotel chocolat velvetiser) but definitely not in the summertime. Other than that I would just have water and cordial. Also 1-2 cans of coke zero over the weekend.

If they really do drink 15 cups of tea a day then that could apparently lower their risk of dying from heart attack or stroke by up to 71% (BHF says this research needs further clarification though). But still - maybe they're on to something?!

[[According to a study recently covered by UK media outlets, adults who drink up to two cups of tea a day for more than seven years have a 19 per cent lower risk of dying from a heart attack or stroke than those who drink less, or no tea at all.

Every extra cup of tea a day lowered their risk by 4 per cent, suggests the research. www.bhf.org.uk/informationsupport/heart-matters-magazine/news/behind-the-headlines/is-tea-good-for-you]]

Nothing wrong with drinking tea but 3 cups in a row five times a day is excessive! I maybe only have 2/3 a day. Are these guests who are staying with you? Not unreasonable to suggest they help themselves!

if I had all that caffeine I’d never sleep (not that I do anyway..).

I have a whole cupboard full of various kinds of tea. I particularly like (especially in the summer) various green teas. Also have matcha which admittedly is something of an acquired taste.

when I spent a month in SE Asia I learnt to like iced tea and I bought the new teabags Liptons have out that you can put in water and it’s just like their peach iced tea!

in winter I tend to drink more black teas and I have a few spiced black teas.

pambeesleyhalpert · Yesterday 21:28

YABVVU. I LOVE tea. But I’d make it myself because people esp non tea drinkers just can’t make it right. But I do chain my tea 😂

Borborygmus · Yesterday 21:28

I generally drink 3 mugs of decaffeinated tea after every meal, so that's 9 mugs a day. I rarely drink anything else.

Difficulty101 · Yesterday 22:08

I sometimes crave a cup of tea in the afternoon. Realised some tea contains almost as much caffeine as the (weak) coffee I drink.

I guess some people are genuinely addicted and don't realise it is a caffeine hit.

Arran2024 · Yesterday 22:24

I detest tea, always have, always will. I hate used tea bags - it's a bit of a phobia tbh. And I cannot fathom how people can be bothered with making all those cups of tea during the day.

I'm scared I will end up in a care home where they make me drink it! And what will I do if there's a police incident and I'm in shock and I'm forced a cuppa for my own good?! I would genuinely throw up.

I was a real tea Jenny for many years.
A bit tired? Pop the kettle on
Stressful situation? Cup of tea
Busy or overwhelmed? Stick the kettle on first.
I would drink it from sun up to sun down.
Then I changed to decaf, and amazingly, there was no difference in taste (PG TIPS) but I've gone from more cups of tea than I can count, to 2 most days.
One in the morning when I first get up which is out of habit more than anything and does nothing to increase my wakefulness, and one before bed.
I have stopped flicking the kettle on whenever I am tired or stressed or bored.

The rest of the day, I drink water and I am more aware of if I am thirsty now.
So for me, I'm convinced it was the caffeine.
I really can take it or leave it now.

i think i need a cuppa after reading that

Isittimetojumpoff · Yesterday 23:02

Yeah, it's far too much hassle. As is coffee. Plus, the latter smells utterly disgusting.

I'll offer to make guests their inaugural cup of either. From then on, I'll pour them wine, otherwise they're shown where the tea, coffee, mugs, kettle, sugar and milk are, and invited to help themselves.

Hilarious!!!

If doing so, I probably need reporting, too. I cannot stand the taste or smell of tea or coffee.

If I had my way, I'd simultaneously rid the world of hunger, tea and coffee.

MargaretMeldrew · Yesterday 23:08

Sweet Holy Jeez, not everyone who is a tea drinker drinks that much of it. I’m a tea drinker. Three cups a day. I make it myself because everyone else’s tea tastes crap😅

LadyEleanorRosalindaWhitethorn · Yesterday 23:12

just made a nice cuppa ah Tetley

Omg this is such a relief to hear. The tea bag phobia. I've never mentioned it to anyone because, you know, I don't want to sound completely insane but I'm so glad to hear I'm not the only one.

I have a similar issue with coffee spoons and mugs which have had coffee in them.

In fact, I have mugs that people can use for drinking coffee out of and then I have my mugs. If someone drinks coffee out of one of my mugs, it gets relegated to communal use, never to be drunk from by me again!!!

SnowFrogJelly · Yesterday 23:16

I love tea but 3-4 cups a day is enough for me
don’t Judge all tea drinkers by your guests
