To expect Spain to be hot in August!?

Going to Tenerife next week… temperatures are showing in the high teens/early 20s…

kids are already moaning it’ll be too cold to use the pool, DH is comparing with the sunshine and home and bemoaning the cost and I’m trying to put a positive spin on it…!

Tenerife has a nice steady warm, dry island climate most of the year round. People go to the Canaries for Christmas sunshine. I wouldn't set my heart on being able to swim in December but you'll be fine in August. It will be very nice.

I wouldn't actually go to the Med in August as it can be hotter than Satan's armpit.

Yes, I think she probably doesn't realise. They're nearer to the Western Sahara and Morocco than Spain!

I live in mainland Spain and it's just relentless heat at the moment.

I don't know if you've been to Tenerife before, but the north is beautiful. And a visit to Teide is a must. Take a boat trip to LA Gomera....you'll have a great time.

High teens to early twenties is the best temperature window for an active holiday in my opinion. Good for swimming, walking, cycling. Once it gets to thirties physical activity becomes uncomfortable.

It is 28 to 30 degrees in Los Cristianos just now, it will probably be hotter in August.

I'm in Tenerife now. Trust me...it's early 30s. I assume you are going to the south. Make sure when you Google the weather you put the resort in or south Tenerife otherwise it can show the north.

Depends which side of the island you're on. One side is cooler and windier than the other.

Canaries are usually in a range from low to high 20s all year round. So will not be as hot as say Madrid or other parts of Spain due to their geographical location. Frankly, living in the Mediterranean, I am paying lots of money to go to the mountains where it will be low 20s at most. Bliss!

Have you looked at where Tenerife is on a map? It's not in Spain, or in the Mediterranean. It's in the Atlantic and can be windy. It's usually hot in the summer and pretty warm in winter too. I often go to the canaries in the late winter/early spring and it's more than warm enough to swim in a pool.

That was the temp when I went at Christmas so I would be fairly annoyed.

Last time I looked, the Canaries were in the Atlantic, not the Med.

Of course mainland Spain will be very hot, which is why I recently declined joining an extended family holiday in southern Spain - in August. 🥵

Weather is weather. It is not a guarantee. Would you "expect" most of England to be 30 degrees plus in early July?

We used to live in SW France - holidaymakers would "expect" it to be scorching sunshine and yet sometimes it rained. Some days were very windy. We also had plenty of epic thunderstorms.

Go to Accuweather and search your destination's 10 day forecast, as I just have. Then show the results to your children and tell them to stop whingeing.

The north part of Tenerife will never be as warm as the south. That is a well-known fact. Mainland Spain, with the exception of the very north of the peninsula, is always very hot in August. But you’re not going to mainland Spain - you’re going to some islands thousands of kilometres away, each one with its own microclimate and with very different temperatures and humidity levels.

It's not Spain, it's Teneriffe. Fwiw, the sea around Rhodes last week was cold compared to the land temperature (30C+) but perfectly swimmable.

Given I've gone to Tenerife every January for the last 30 years apart from COVID and regularly swam and come back with a nice tan, despite not sunbathing at all. Remind your kids that last week was too hot to even move so 20 degrees IN THE SHADE will be perfect

In Mallorca - Cala Ratjada- late October/early November and the pool (unheated) just about ok but sea temperature perfect!

Where are you looking for temperatures? https://www.bbc.co.uk/weather/6297190 BBC showing anything between 27c and 30c. Not high teens.

Puerto de la Cruz is 840 miles or so from mainland Spain.

FFS……..bit of a ‘third world problem’ !

When we were in north Tenerife last August we checked several forecasts each day, each one was different and we gave up. Definitely hot each day but sometimes quite cloudy. Do not be fooled if you do get clouds, you can still be sunburnt.
