AIBU to think Andy Burnham might call a general election soon?

To think Andy Burnham will call a general election before Christmas? Yes it would be a massive roll of the dice but,

Reform - don't have the numbers for a GE and there's all frog faces suspicious money bringing him a lot of heat.

Torys - kemi doesn't have a lot of depth, I feel and she hasn't changed much in the polls. She's good at the dispatch box but let's face it anyone could stand up and insult the other side.

By calling a GE Andy would have his own mandate and break the deadlock of the back benchers.

Not being unreasonable = he needs to call a GE

Your being unreasonable = Robotic Kier and Ratchet Reeves have gone and Andy just needs to get on with it now.

Ehh, I don't think it will tbh. It didn't in 2022, nobody voted for the Truss plan, and this government have an ever bigger majority. For whatever reason, our system doesn't really prevent this kind of thing.

I mean Truss kind of illustrates exactly what I said.

She proposed major changes to the taxation system which she had no mandate to do, the markets, the press and the public hammered her (mainly due to lack of planning rather than the proposals actually being that bad) and she was forced to resign.

I think if her proposals had worked and been well received she would have gone to the country in pretty short order. She didn't actually get round to that because she was deposed before it could happen.

Doesn't matter. It needs to stop. This is the government of the UK, not a playground popularity context.

Why does need to stop now and not in 2022?

It does when MPs vote as MPs not Party Members.

Part of the problems the Tory "Strong and Stable ®©" parade of governments faces was there were enough Tory MPs who were able to threaten to abstain or vote against (or for) measures that led to permanent internecine horse trading.

Be careful what you wish for, caggers. Your beloved Reform won't win a majority going by current polling. You could end up with a 🌈 coalition of the left.

Nobody has made any attempt to silence you. Is everyone supposed to just fall in line and agree with you?

What we need now is three years of stability and a government with its head down so we can make an evidence based decision when we next go to the polls.

Worth reminding the meeting that the UK is still paying for her experiment. Turns out giving away other peoples money is expensive, Who knew ?

Labour set the scene on this and benefited from the media and outrage on SM to get in. They’ll get the same back whether people now think it’s too much or not.

Or more to the point giving away money that has to be borrowed at high interest.

I replied before you edited to add being punished at the next election- I agree that's the most likely outcome in the event of another Truss style epic fail. The proposals failed as they were always going to, but I've always thought part of the reason she was able to get in and implement them in the first place is people maybe didn't take her seriously.

They very much didn't set the scene, there were people on the right agitating for a GE in 07 when Brown took over, nothing to do with their numbers being more favourable with Cameron than Howard obv. There was just less social media to do it on then.

But I agree with the rest, it's part of the landscape now and inevitable. Personally I tune it out.

I have never understood why Truss was chosen over Sunak. If she hadn't been a lot of financial pain could have been avoided.

Based on my sample size of 1 Conservative party member whom I know personally, they thought correctly that the billionaire wife was going to be a problem at election time, and thought incorrectly that Truss wouldn't be stupid enough to actually do all the shit she was promising.

Yeh they did. The media and SM really became a destabilising force during partygate. SM is far bigger factor than Brown days. They’re now realising what it means as they’re in power.

They don’t like it but were happy to benefit from it, SM criticism won’t go away even though I’m sure they’d like to have more power over it.

I would welcome a chance to vote for Kemi who seems to be the only one with common sense.

I struggle with the notion that this government has been stable.

What with the u-turns and the leaks and the resignations etc.

Completely separate discussion.

But for me anyone who knows anything about financials will tell you all Truss actually did was increase the rate of change of the interest rate. Rates were heading up anyway as can be seen by comparison of UK 10 year gilts with other countries such as Germany over the medium term rather than just the blip Truss created.

I won't defend Truss's implementation because that was very poor, but the ideas I don't think were unsound, and in fact have worked in other countries that are very close to home, she just went about the process wrong way.

The legacy of Truss is that she made (and is still making) politicians very scared of making major changes, in an environment where I think the country needs major change. Starmers downfall is very much to me based on him not being bold enough (coupled will hamstringing himself by pledging he wasn't going to raise income taxes), which I think can partly be attributed to fear of going the same way as Truss.

That's the difference though between actually understanding Truss and what happened, and jumping on the bandwagon to have a go at her, which is what most people seem to want to do.

No they didn't, because the Tories were doing it before them. The scene existed already because the norm had already been established.

The social media environment is obviously much vaster now, but no one political party made that happen, and they're now all stuck with the effects of something multiple different Oppositions ushered in.

eta- also now I think of it there were def Lib Dems in 07 too. I expect they didn't get the coverage the largest opposition party did, understandably.

The same people who are saying stop SM used it as much as possible against the last lot. That’s now happening to them and it’s not wanted.
