How to approach neighbour about 6am screaming…

Larrythecatforpm · 19/07/2026 13:13

My neighbour opposite has young children, I sympathise and understand kids that age are going to make noise, it’s just what they do.

However every single weekend for the past 6 months since then moved in (and I imagine most of the summer hols) the neighbour has been letting them play out in the front garden from 6am or getting them in the car and they just scream full pelt non stop.
It’s right opposite my bedroom window, they wake me up and I can’t get back to sleep.
I am absolutely sick of it. They are council tenants can I put in a noise complaint? I have mentioned it to the mother before and she didn’t seem to see the issue using the excuse they’re little. Angry

This morning it was from 5.45am.

You don’t seem to have had a calm civil chat or popped a gentle note through the door!

I have, I have spoken to her kindly already about it.

getting them in the car and they just scream full pelt non stop.

Like they are being hurt? How long does this go on for?
That sounds really strange behaviour. We're not talking an inconsolable baby, but young children.

Hayley1256 · 19/07/2026 14:46

I would just put in the noise complaint OP, you don't have anything to lose

malefields · 19/07/2026 14:47

I’d probably try to talk to them first (not that it will do much), then noise complaint.

Then probably try to find a sound equally as annoying. If you’re going to be up anyways, might as well bother them back.

Wow, that's really bad! Shit parenting. Would lead to a lot of issues later in life! Also odd as kids this young generally just switch off when they need to sleep - is she up early as well, or is her schedule screwed up?

She's up about 6.30am, she sleeps in the same room as her parents so that's why she is up until they are. She cries at the drop of a hat, I mean, I know she is of the age where she's pushing boundaries and getting upset if doesn't get her own way but it's over nothing most of the time. Just wails. I think that's a lot with being very tired.

It's hideous, honestly! I know it's not the fault of the child but the parents but I honestly dislike them all immensely. I feel sorry for her teachers come Sept and for the girl herself.

No; not like getting hurt just having a hissy fit probably over tired or something like thatS

From what I understand councils and local authorities do not act against noise complaints when it involves noise from children.... thankfully.

Yabu. Go live somewhere isolated if it bothers you so much.

Why should she?! Honestly, I didn’t believe there were people about with attitudes like yours until I joined MN. Thankfully in the minority. It’s lazy self entitled parenting. A common problem these days because parents are too busy doing nothing, and don’t have time to parent their kids. Crack on if you want your small self entitled feral kids to become self entitled feral adults, but don’t inflict your slack parenting methods on others….

I am asking because a noise complaint would do nothing if a private tenant or own the home, but as they are council would a noise complaint make the council actually do something about it?

You can report noise to the council whoever they are.

But honestly, be truthful now, are they REALLY screaming non stop?

MandemChickenShop · 19/07/2026 13:16

just don't. move, get some earplugs, close your window.

so what if she's a council tenant.

Why the hell should OP move or have to get earplugs because she has a selfish idiot living opposite her?

Letting your child or children scream and screech especially early morning is inconsiderate and lazy parenting

you ask why? to solve the problem thats all.

MyDarlingRose · 19/07/2026 14:59

No you can’t. The noise made by children isn’t illegal even at 6am. You should wear ear plugs as it’s not their fault you can’t get back to sleep as much as it’s not your fault they are making noise.

You can go and ask her to keep them quieter before 8am but children aren’t robots to be programmed.

Yes. I wouldn’t care otherwise. If it wouldn’t out me I would post my camera footage so you could all see how irrating it is.

The trouble is loud people know they are loud and they don't care. I wouldn't have let my DS out or scream at that time whether it was the holidays or not.

Put in a noise complaint with the noise abatement team although if they are like my city they will be useless. As they rent from the council it might be worth complaining.

Backtobroc · 19/07/2026 15:04

Have any of the other neighbours expressed annoyance at this to you?

and you said “fair enough” and walked off?

I would have followed up with “oh I do understand, I recall those days all too clearly. However, I would keep them inside until 8am on the weekends for the neighbours sakes and I’d be grateful if you could do the same”

Yes neighbours diagonally (but next to them) said they hear them through the walls screaming & shouting at stupid hours.

I live next to a play park and DO hear kids ‘screaming’ all day but never this early!!! I would have to do or say something

Pistachiocake · 19/07/2026 15:28

Not much can be done about babies screaming, but if they're older, it can-all the families down our street explain to their kids why they have to be quiet in the garden (very small terraced houses and gardens, so it's important we keep our kids quiet or everyone would get disturbed!)
It is difficult for some our family/friends who have children with additional needs, but there are strategies people can try to avoid disturbing neighbours-a lot of us take it in turns to take kids to the park/soft play etc where they can make noise. Not at 6am, but for this, some of the families have been to local centres and learned ideas and activities to do in the house that help children with additional needs to be quieter.

My elderly DM once had a very bad neighbour problem. She was semi-detached, owned her house, the other half was council owned with tenant family, who were a nightmare. I wrote on her behalf to council pointing out that their tenants were creating a "nuisance" (specific legal term) to my DM, preventing her from the "quiet enjoyment of her home" (another specific legal phrase) with details. I wrote that as their landlord, the council was responsible for them being housed there, and council was therefore responsible by default for the "nuisance", which they needed to ensure was stopped. Don't know if that is the reason but a few weeks later said anti-social family was rehoused.
