How to approach neighbour about 6am screaming…

My neighbour opposite has young children, I sympathise and understand kids that age are going to make noise, it’s just what they do.

However every single weekend for the past 6 months since then moved in (and I imagine most of the summer hols) the neighbour has been letting them play out in the front garden from 6am or getting them in the car and they just scream full pelt non stop.
It’s right opposite my bedroom window, they wake me up and I can’t get back to sleep.
I am absolutely sick of it. They are council tenants can I put in a noise complaint? I have mentioned it to the mother before and she didn’t seem to see the issue using the excuse they’re little. Angry

This morning it was from 5.45am.

Noise from children is usually protected from being classed as a noise nuisance, although if it's before 7am it has a greater chance of being considered as such.

Personally I don't think a complaint will go anywhere.

As a council tenant she could be evicted for anti-social behaviour but the bar for that is quite high, especially if there are children involved.

Again, don't think it would go anywhere.

Maybe I'm wrong, but if you own your property you'll have a neighbour dispute to declare and no change if I'm right.

Normal household noise, yes, but children screaming in the garden at 6 am? Who does that?

x2boys · 19/07/2026 14:22

I doubt the council will do much
It takes a lot to evict someone

Yes. Heard of the carrot or the stick?
Try the carrot first.

If still no joy.....
The stick.

I've heard of the carrot and the stick and I still think wtf!

Ironically I have two on the spectrum myself, they were never like this, they made noise but I didn’t let them out at stupid o’clock to wake the entire street up. So them being on the spectrum isn’t an excuse that flies by me.

Edited

Fair enough.

My autistic 8 year old yells out in excitement on the trampoline sometimes. We do tell him not to and he only occasionally goes on there. No need for constant screaming

Mine does too but unlike your child he isnt able to undersrand why he shouldnt be screaming

Take her some homemade cakes and just speak to her and explain

Whaaat? Homemade cakes, what a bizarre suggestion

Who would actually do that?

Backtobroc · 19/07/2026 14:30

Have you ever tried to have a chat with them?

Are you friendly with your other neighbours?

Yes but presumably / hopefully you factor this in and don’t allow your child out to scream in the early hours?

x2boys · 19/07/2026 14:32

cubistqueen · 19/07/2026 14:19

Of course you’re not unreasonable. We all knkw what screaming is and kids these days seem to do it almost constantly. No way would I have allowed mine out at that time and no way they would have been allowed to screech/scream/make high pitched migraine inducing noises. Good that they are council tenants so you stand a chance or something actually being done.

I doubt it my housing association struggled to evict my nrighbour who stole my sons phone and threatened him along with a lot of other anti social behaviour

hahabahbag · 19/07/2026 14:32

Yes raise it as a noise complaint, but the council are unlikely to do more than write to them

Of course not.

Ponoka7 · 19/07/2026 14:34

Housing associations have anti social teams. You can report anti social behaviour. You might find that you aren't the only one complaining. Rearing children and dog ownership seems to have gone out of the window, it's a free-for-all, these days.

Sassylovesbooks · 19/07/2026 14:35

Sounds like the neighbour we had, she lived behind us. She chain smoked in the garden and her youngest followed her. He only could get his Mum's attention from scrolling on her phone, by shouting at her. He had no 'off button' or 'quiet mode', it was full pelt shouting all the time. She spoke loudly on hands-free constantly, talking to her friends. We often had this at 6 am - 7 am weekdays and weekends.

She private rented, and we chose to ignore the noise as much as possible. It was hard, as our bedroom window faced her garden. Thankfully the landlord sold up, so she has to move out. We should have contacted the letting agent and made a complaint really, because she has no self-awareness or consideration. Approaching her would have been pointless, she wasn't the type to listen.

I would report the issue. It's madness that she thinks allowing young children out side to play at 5.45 am is acceptable! It really isn't!

Of course not.

There’s no “of course” on an anonymous chat forum 😕

For me it's the assumption that all women bake.
I don't bake. What am I supposed to do to placate potentially inconsiderate neighbours?
I might manage a cornflake cake I suppose 😂

hahabahbag · 19/07/2026 14:38

Autism or other disabilities is not an excuse for ruining the lives of your neighbours, you keep them inside until 8am if they can’t be outside without screaming, you also soundproof adjoining walls if sound inside is an issue, you do your best to ensure your neighbours aren’t disturbed. It’s not a case of never let them out - for short periods during the daytime if those dc who scream due to ld’s can have outside time but not all day, not early morning and not when it’s late enough for other kids to be in bed (8pm or so to be fair to all). I have a dc with asd, if she wasn’t able to behave appropriately she would be brought in (frequent, until she learned)

Are you suggesting OP could make homemade brownies of the "medicinal" variety? 1 before bedtime or one when they wake up might indeed give OP the peace they need.

My cats are in by 8pm. 😂 Good try though! Bit weird to go through my past posts though.

We have lots of neighbours. One has a loud vintage motorbike that he gets out of the garage at unholy hours and revs up. There are dogs, lots and lots of loud children, there is music, there are power tools, jet washers, strimmers. Church bells. Our recycling service comes at stupid o'clock and the glass collection is really noisy. They're all probably really nice people.

My point being, I choose to live in a populated area, I choose to accept that comes with the noise of the humans I share it with. The alternative is I spend most of my time frothing at the mouth, like my neighbour, who is driving herself mad with the opposite perspective and thinks she is owed peace. Get some earplugs, or some noise cancelling headphones, don't fight it.

I remember your username as being cat related and you posting you don’t give a hoot about affecting others with your shouting 🤷‍♀️
